23.01.2022 When you invest in children, you invest in the future of the Northern Territory. The Territory Labor Government has made it a priority to invest in our children.... In the last four years we have doubled the number of Families as First Teachers (FaFT) sites to 55. A child’s early years are the most developmentally important in their lives and are critical for preparing them for success at school and into adulthood. That’s why we have delivered on the promised expansion of our FaFT program, which helps all our Territory children to be ready for day one of school, no matter where they live.

18.01.2022 Happy World Rural Women’s Day to all the mums, carers, govies, nannies, jills, kids, teachers, educators and health workers (& everyone else I’ve missed) out bush!

18.01.2022 Happy Indigenous Literacy Day! Thanks to the The Indigenous-Literacy Foundation KICS has distributed over 30 BOXES of books in the last 5 years to over 25 Indigenous communities with little or no access to early childhood services. We were also super excited to launch the Kriol translation of Too Many Cheeky Dogs ‘Bigismob Jigiwan Dog’ by Meigim Kriol Strongbala and have Karen Manbulloo from the Binjari Buk Mob read her bilingual ‘Molly the Pig’ at our inaugural KICS Literacy Festival this year! Keep on reading!

16.01.2022 This coming week is 'Get Together Week' for the Bush Kids of Central Australia. Sometimes referred to as 'In-school' it means, the kids from remote & very remot...e areas come together in Alice Springs for a week-long socially interactive program. Kids in the bush who attend 'school of the air' learning programs attend their lessons in their home via IDL (Interactive Distance Learning) or video conference. They show up this way every school day of every year - not just for a term! Furthermore, the parents & caregivers are intrinsically involved in the process - involved in setting lesson tasks, marking, appraisals, uploading results, and helping their kids through every process and helping them achieve every necessary milestone. The parents and caregivers are Home Tutors and fulfil the role of the teacher in the classroom to a large extent, working closely with the school of the air educators to deliver comprehensive curriculum and learning outcomes. It's not a job for the faint of heart! As each term draws to a close, the schools of the air put on the 'in-school' or 'get together week' programs to bring all the students together for the social and physical interactivity they are craving - something kids who go to school in a classroom with their friends each day may take for granted. But for Bush Kids, even getting there is a task in itself, across hundreds of kilometres over corrugated and sometimes boggy roads! These roads and the distances travelled take a heavy toll on families, creating massive burden in vehicle repair and maintenance costs, let alone the time taken to travel the vast distances. But it's a price they must pay in order to give their kids the opportunity to interact with their 'classmates' in a social environment. So this week, as 'in-school' at Alice Springs School of the Air kicks off, we wish all the Bush Kids our very best - and we salute parents, caregivers, teachers and support staff, for all their hard work and dedication to deliver a quality academic and co-curricular education to our precious Bush Kids. #alicespringsschooloftheair #ASSOA #KSA #NTSDE #distanceeducation #horsesforcoursesforbushkids #ICPA

15.01.2022 Look at the differences between a typical preschool child’s hand (left) and a typical 7 year old hand (right). Want to know why a preschool aged child isn’t a...ble to write yet? This is why! Their hands are still developing and are not fully formed. So what should they be doing to support this? PLAY!! Playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. . All of these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they will show you when they are ready. via @Raisingherbarefoot

15.01.2022 Happy Christmas to all our KICS families and friends. Stay safe and enjoy the wet season!

12.01.2022 Happy Christmas Kalkaringi!

11.01.2022 The FaFT Mums have been busy translating both picture books and songs to Kriol so that young children can have access to songs and books in their own language. ...This wonderful work has been facilitated by Carol and Greg from Meigim Strongbala Kriol who come into FaFT weekly and run translating sessions, Kriol reading and writing activities and even spelling tests! We are so grateful for their work which enables wonderful parent capacity building skills while also producing fantastic Kriol resources. Pictured here are Greg and Carol with some Families who are holding books and songs that have been translated into Kriol. We must also thank the Indigenous Literacy Foundation who kindly donate the books and Kriol Stickers to go alongside them. Stay tuned for our Kriol songbook coming up soon! See more

10.01.2022 Hyped that the paperback is finally out!! Here's what others have said about this book: As the world cascades toward sameness in languages, this volume puts u...p a huge stop sign. With convincing historical accounts and a wide range of instructional practices, this book is an absolute must-read for any social scientist or linguist. Dedicated to language revitalization, the experts represented here stress the vitality of entry into the social and cognitive worlds of children from different cultures through a substantial dedication to writing and reading. Shirley Brice Heath Margery Bailey Professor of English and Dramatic Literature; Professor of Linguistics, Emerita Stanford University This exciting book focuses on an under-researched topic that fills a hole in the fields of both literacy education and language revitalization teaching the writing of Indigenous languages to children. Centering on the role of literacy education in language revitalization, the chapters range the world, with chapters on languages with millions of speakers, to a handful from revitalizing writing systems that have a past history of literacy, to new orthographies developed for the first time for re-awakening languages. Importantly, attention is paid to debates over possible negatives of putting oral languages to paper, but shows the importance of writing for the survival of endangered languages, for many reasons including (re)valorization, revival of genres, increased functions of the language, and present-day communicative needs. While both written documentation and orthographic development have been topics of research and activism in language revitalization, this volume is a very welcome first, with its emphasis on the pedagogy of writing. Leanne Hinton Professor Emerita, University of California, Berkeley The UN has issued alarming declarations about the state of learning for disadvantaged linguistic minorities. UNICEF[1] documentation shows how even increasing school participation rates does not necessarily achieve commensurate learning gains for ethnic minority and indigenous students, with the most disadvantaged students gaining the least benefit. The cause of this dispiriting conclusion is often because of language policies, especially language of instruction, tied to persisting negative attitudes toward children’s mother tongues. This volume is a magnificent contribution to this critical area. Addressing the role of writing in intergenerationally endangered Indigenous language communities, it bridges the gap between language revitalization literature, research on writing pedagogy, and the global agenda of a more equal and fair education. The chapters are expertly written by individual authors and intelligently integrated by the editors, Ari Sherris and Joy Kreeft Peyton, to highlight a range of instructional writing practices connected to social and economic outcomes for Indigenous populations in such diverse environments as Finland, Ghana, Hawaii, Mexico, Papua New Guinea. The authors ‘rise above’ narrowly conceived literacy debates and narrowly conceiving theories of literacy. Here we find complexity theory, biliteracy, and genre and critical approaches enriching functional understandings of pedagogy and literacy learning, tied to a strong focus on the cultural rights of communities whose lives are subjected to control and domination. Joseph Lo Bianco Professor of Language and Literacy Education Melbourne Graduate School of Education The University of Melbourne A very valuable collection. Although the continued life of threatened languages depends finally on the willingness of parents to speak them to their children, the support provided by schooling is critical, and only with literacy in indigenous languages can the school find a place for the language. This pioneering collection shows a number of significant examples of success. Bernard Spolsky Professor Emeritus, Bar-Ilan University https://www.routledge.com//Sherris-Pe/p/book/9780367661755

09.01.2022 The #TSBakeOff is back for its fourth year! Today, I am thrilled to announce that the Threatened Species Bake Off is back for 2020. To mark Threatened Species D...ay on September 7, I’m encouraging Australians to bake a dessert in the shape of a threatened species and share it with me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #TSBakeOff. This year, journalist and Australian bird enthusiast, Chris Bath and seasoned #TSBakeOff judge, ecologist Dr Bec West will be joining me to judge submissions. As we are all spending much more time at home in 2020, this year’s theme is ‘What’s in your backyard?’. We are encouraging you to research and celebrate the threatened species found in your local area, backyards and schools. To add to your discovery adventure, we are also encouraging you to take part in this year’s Backyard Bush Blitz. You are guaranteed to learn more about the remarkable biodiversity in your own backyard! There are six categories that you can enter including an early learner’s category (children 4 years old and younger), a children’s category (children aged 5 15 years old), an open category (15 years and older including community groups), a schools category and a Bush Blitz award, which will be given to the entry with the highest number of submissions to the Backyard Species Discovery Project on iNaturalist Australia (bit.ly/BackyardBushBlitz). Get baking Australia! I can’t wait to see what creations you make and the species you discover in your own backyard! More information is available at bit.ly/tsbakeoff

04.01.2022 RIP to Sir Ken Robinson, an eloquent and indefatigable defender of the role of the arts and creativity in education. His TED talks made him world-famoushis pre...sentation called "Do schools kill creativity?" remains the most popular TED talk of all timeand he wrote widely, including major books on creativity in 2001 and 2015. Robinson was knighted in 2003 for his distinguished career in service to the arts. He was a staunch critic of standardized tests and compliance-based classrooms, and an unapologetic champion of every kind of creative endeavorfrom theater, to music, film, painting, dance, and everything in between. He died yesterday after a brief battle with cancer. His voice will be greatly missed.

02.01.2022 Are the cicadas loud at your place? Are you seeing shells everywhere? We're in peak cicada season and Double Drummers are one of the NOISIEST... The incredible ...hatching you see here has been years in the making. The nymph spends many years underground sucking sap from the roots of plants. When conditions are right the cicada tunnels to the surface and walks to a nearby tree. Some cicadas climb fairly high, while others will start shedding almost as soon as they're vertical. They're particularly vulnerable during their hatching cycle and are tasty treats for birds, lizards and meat ants etc. Once they're out of their shell the remaining four to six weeks of the Double Drummer's life is spent producing deafening sounds, drinking sugar and having sex. Eggs are then laid in branches from which nymphs will hatch and fall to the ground to burrow. Wow, what a life cycle! We hope you enjoy this amazing time-lapse video captured, and shared with us, by Shawn Bourke. Thank you Shawn!
