18.01.2022 A learning meal tonight. I’m trying to get away from just using mince- Caleb finds that step to new textures especially difficult. We have checked the medical things (eg iron levels, reflux, EoE in allergy kids, constipation) that may contribute to ‘fussiness’ and we have been working with our gastroenterologist to improve the issues relevant to Caleb, and now it feels like things are stable enough to get on with a softly-gently approach of introducing new food. ... I always team the new with something familiar. I don’t pressure ‘just try’ etc. Another phrase I’ve found helpful with all 3 kids who love telling me ‘we’ve tried it before and don’t like it’ is to tell them ‘oh I like it/ it’s for my dinner, and I’m putting it here now just in case your tastes have changed’. They see me eating it, enjoying it and I’ve given them a face-saving way out if they want to give it another go!

16.01.2022 When you think dinner is done but the kids have other ideas... #anythingtodelaybedtime Food Challenges are such humbling experiences. Of 9 kids who attended the high risk clinic yesterday for various challenges, 3 ‘passed’. ... Yesterday was our day. Little man took every dose (of hideous wheat slurry- wheat flour dissolved in apple juice) with only the mildest of reactions- a handful of hives that resolved without medication so we were given the green light to slowly introduce wheat (so so happy for him). But as happy as I was for us, my heart was 100% in solidarity with all the other mums- rubbing their child’s stomach to help ease their cramps, holding vomit bags, putting calomine on hives, holding this all so lightly to help their children not to feel as through they had ‘failed’ (such awful language we medical people use). I hesitated to write this because I would hate to increase anyone’s anxiety about food challenges. There is good evidence that shows doing food challenges is good for allergy family’s mental health- pass or fail. And it is the safest way to trial a food to see if you can broaden the diet of a growing human- they are vital. But they do sometimes come with a price tag of sadness. These kids weren’t in danger. We had brilliant nurses and doctors looking after all of us who responded appropriately and compassionately. With every family they sat down, went through the results, action plan and gave a refresher on how to use an AAI if required. But danger aside, it hurts. And you know that the next challenge is going to be a little bit harder for your kid to front up to. Bravery, resilience, sheer doggedness and willingness to persist are hallmarks of allergy parents- we use those ‘muscles’ so often they have grown to Herculean proportions. So as happy as I am for us and my little man, I know that feeling- having had our own spectacular fails. I see you, and I hope today has been a better day for you all. xxx

14.01.2022 Snack lunch courtesy of @thehouseofgoodness . I got to try their delicious new crackers- GF with sunflower and chia seeds. Super easy to make and they carry a very satisfying crunch! Served with my artichoke and cannellini beans dip and my green olive and basil pesto (made last night for missy moo- I’m sure she wouldn’t mind sharing!)

13.01.2022 Wheat challenge at the Kids’ Hospital tomorrow. I’m hoping for third time lucky. Wheat was our first planned OFC at 6 months and it was a pretty dramatic intro to the whole system. The second challenge was an early fail (second dose) but he just got hives. We are 2 years down the track from that and tomorrow I reckon we will pass. It will honestly be one of those ingredients that will be life changing to get- wish us luck!

10.01.2022 Sometimes it’s the littlest of things that just make your day...

03.01.2022 Not allergy related but this podcast has been my favourite find of the year. Mandy and Kate are Melbourne mums of twins born prematurely who continue to face various challenges as they wind their way through life. They are like a beautiful warm hug that also makes you giggle- they are fierce advocates for all children and their families living with any disability and their beautiful message of inclusion and just how to be better humans is brilliant. They touch on it all- tw...ins, premature birth, NICU, hospital, therapy, feeding kids who don’t want to eat (!), school, birthday parties etc. They bring an awful lot of joy, humanity and if you are looking for something new to listen to, give it a go. https://m.facebook.com/Too-Peas-In-A-Podcast-324137718501198/ https://m.facebook.com/Too-Peas-In-A-Podcast-324137718501198/
