12.01.2022 Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence ( study reviewed by Dr Kumar Duraisamy) The screen addiction is an universal issue at present from children to adults.... A randomized study was performed by Boers& Afzail et al, 2019 looking at the impact of screen time on psychological health in adolescence. The screen time includes use of social media, television, video gaming, and computer. Association ? This cohort study of 3826 adolescents was measured over four years and looked at the association between screen time and depression to test 3 explanatory hypotheses as : displacement, reinforcing spirals and , upward social comparison. This study assessed screen time and depression throughout 4 years, using an annual survey in a sample of adolescents who entered the seventh grade in 31 schools in the Greater Montreal area ( Canada). Data were collected from September 2012 to September 2018. Analysis began and ended in December 2018. Exercise and self-esteem were assessed to test displacement and upward social comparison hypothesis. Results: Significance between-person associations showed that for every increased hour spent using social media, adolescents showed a 0.64-unit increase in depressive symptoms (95% CI, 0.32-0.51). Similar between-level associations were reported for computer use (0.69; 95% CI, 0.47-0.91). Significant within-person associations revealed that a further 1-hour increase in social media use in a given year was associated with a further 0.41-unit increase in depressive symptoms in that same year. A similar within-person association was found for television (0.18; 95% CI, 0.09-0.2) We know the screen time affects a child developmental milestones like social skill, play skills, language development, imagination skill and self care skills. Furthermore, it can lead to back pain, vision issues, overweight, sleep issues and consequent behaviour problems. In addition, it is now sad to see how the screen time could affect our psychological health especially during the best time of our life. As they say , psychological health is equally or more important than the physical health, it is vital for parents to monitor what they are watching , guide the life style balance and limit the screen time ( the recommended duration of less than an two hour- if possible less than one hour /day for kids more than 5 years old; less than one hour for 2-5 years old and no screen time until 2 years of age )

08.01.2022 Dr kumar Duraisamy Reviewed NSW Health guidelines Influenza vaccine is the best option available to protect your child from being infected and unwell from, the virus influenza, commonly known as ‘the flu’. This flu vaccine is advised for all the children above 6 months of age. Any child with long term medical health condition may have their immunity less and are prone for flu infection. It is recommended to have regular yearly Influenza vaccination in this case. Furthermore a...ll the household members should also be vaccinated to minimise the incidence of your child being exposed. The flu vaccine is free of cost in NSW up to five years of age or a child with chronic or complex medical illness like Chronic lung or heart conditions, immunodeficiency et c. It is also free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and pregnant women. The influenza vaccine is produced by different companies hence have different brand names like FluQuadri, Fluarix Tetra etc The vaccine is administered intramuscular injection, mostly given in the upper arm or in the thigh for babies by a trained healthcare professional. It is given two doses for the children less than nine years who are receiving the vaccine for the first time. The Influenza vaccine is given usually before the start of every winter. The flu virus is common from end of May to September. Some children may develop an unwanted side effects like redness, fever, aches and pain that can last up to 48 hours. Influenza vaccinations are safe and a child with allergy to egg can receive the vaccine under monitoring.

05.01.2022 My Recent journal presentation in Paediatric Departmental meeting : effect of anti depressants during pregnancy on developmental milestones outcome in kindergarten Deepa, danchateau et al,2020 Objective :To determine if in utero selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or selective serotonin norepinephrine inhibitor (SNRI) exposure is associated with developmental vulnerability in kindergarten among children whose mothers were diagnosed with prenatal mood or anxiety di...sorder Method : Linkable administrative data were used to create a population-based cohort of 266479 mother-child dyads of children born in Manitoba, Canada, between 1996 and 2014, with follow-up through 2015.The sample was restricted to mothers who had a mood or anxiety disorder diagnosis between 90 days before conception (N = 13818). Exposed women had 2 SSRI or SNRI dispensations during pregnancy (n = 2055); unexposed mothers did not have a dispensation of an SSRI or SNRI during pregnancy (n = 10017). The Early Development Instrument (EDI) was used to assess developmental health in kindergarten children. The EDI is a 104-component kindergarten teacher-administered questionnaire, encompassing 5 developmental domains. Result : Children in the exposed group also had a signicant risk of being vulnerable in language and/or cognition (adjusted odds ratio = 1.40; 95% condence interval 1.031.90). However, they have used only screening tools and not a comprehensive assessment, further studies are required on this topic
