23.01.2022 *POST STROKE REHAB FOR BABIES* Did you know babies can suffer strokes? Check out this little trooper! Poor bub suffered an ischemic stroke 3 months ago which temporarily shut down the developmental centers of the brain, and made it difficult for him to roll, crawl and use his left hand. Primitive movements such as rolling, tummy time, crawling, reaching and standing are all important for body and brain development. It ensures that primitive reflexes are integrated well and r...eplaced by more mature postural reflexes, which in turn develops the higher cognitive areas of the brain! Everything is a process, and each step in the developmental process is as important as the other - if a baby skips a step or spends very little time at a step, then it could impact their development!

21.01.2022 *SENSORY DEFENSIVENESS* Does your child react aversively or defensively to non-harmful stimuli? Are they aggravated by clothes tags, loud sounds, or certain food textures? If so, then they may have sensory defensiveness! Sensory defensiveness is an overreaction to our normal protective senses. Symptoms vary from each person and can include things such as avoidance, sensory seeking, fear, anxiety or even aggression.... Check out the short clip below where we use the therapressure program to provide deep touch pressure to help reduce sensory defensiveness. Learn more about the therapressure program here - http://wilbarger.tripod.com/id4.html

18.01.2022 Most of us have heard about the vestibular system, but what does it actually mean for our kids? The vestibular system is one of the most important systems for brain development and is fully developed 4.5 months in utero! This makes it one of the first forms of sensory stimulation (sensory stimulation = brain development) as bub moves around in the womb. One of the main purposes of the vestibular system is its ability to coordinate input from all our other systems by giving... us a reference point to where we are. This gives us information about where that smell, sound, or light is coming from and allows us to process this information safely and effectively. When this system isnt working optimally our brain finds it difficult to process this information which can lead to anxiety, sensory seeking/avoiding behaviour and breakdowns! The vestibular system is also responsible for: - Developing good posture and muscle tone - Developing motor skills like walking and running - Controlling eye movements (important for reading, writing and sport) Check out the video below to see one of the ways we use passive head movement to activate the vestibular system! Any questions, feel free to send us a message :)

17.01.2022 Had an awesome time over the weekend, learning about effective strategies to help children with sensory defensiveness. Sensory defensiveness is characterised by a negative reaction to sensory input (touch, sounds, smell, movement, taste) making it difficult for a child to thrive in their day-to-day life. If you would like to know more about sensory defensiveness, how it could be effecting your child, and how we can help; be sure to contact us and check out the link below!... https://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/sensory-defensi

15.01.2022 Do you ever feel like your child is being held back from reaching their potential? Does your child struggle with life at home, school or sport? If so, then retained primitive reflexes may be the missing piece to your puzzle! Retained primitive reflexes are often overlooked in the treatment of kids. All babies are born with a set of primitive reflexes, which help the baby get through the first year of life. As the brain starts to develop, these reflexes are switched off and re...placed with more mature reflexes. The switching off of these reflexes creates a solid foundation for further learning. If these reflexes are not switched off, it makes it very hard for a child to learn new or complex tasks! If youd like to learn more about retained primitive reflexes and what we can do to help; check out the link below, and be sure to send us a message! https://www.mychildwillthrive.com/retained-primitive-refle/

11.01.2022 *RETAINED PRIMITIVE REFLEXES - MORO REFLEX* Is you child anxious? Hyperactive? Impulsive? or Hypersensitive? If so, then they may have a retained Moro Reflex! Read on to find out more about The Moro Reflex, and check out the video below! The Moro Reflex, also known as the startle reflex is the first instance of the fight, flight, fright response to any perceived threat. It emerges at 9 weeks in utero and should be integrated by 2-4 months.... The Moro Reflex is a whole body response to sudden changes in vestibular, movement, auditory, visual or tactile stimuli. When retained or poorly integrated, it is characterised by hypersensitivity, hyperactivity, poor impulse control, sensory overload, and social and emotional immaturity. This makes makes it difficult for a child to sleep well, learn, play, and thrive in their day-to-day life! If you have any questions send me a message ;)

05.01.2022 Ever wondered how our brains develop? The answer is through SENSORY STIMULATION! This means gathering input from our 5 main senses - touch, taste, sound, smell and sight. But we often forget about 2 of our most important sensory systems - our proprioceptive system and our vestibular system. Why are these 2 systems so important? They are the only 2 forms of sensory input which are constant and working 24/7! Many of our other systems are dependent on whether we can feel, taste,... hear, smell, or see something but our proprioceptive and vestibular systems are always working against gravity (which is a constant stimulus). This is why our brain relies on movement so much to develop! Check out the video below - imagine if we had more schools like this!

04.01.2022 Lucy getting work done! We've been working with Lucy to help improve her balance, body awareness and concentration to help her excel at school and in day-to-day life. Having good balance and body awareness is key to having good concentration! Balance serves as a foundation for coordination, stable eye movements and physical and emotional security (knowing where our body is in space). Balance should be subconscious and automatic, so if we have poor balance, our brain has to use up extra energy to keep us upright; leaving less energy for higher cognitive tasks (e.g. reading, writing)!
