25.01.2022 Lovely views today at DIR Floortime training for Libby, Taylah and Elena! Stay tuned for an update of all our new knowledge!
25.01.2022 This one hits close to home for me. And I can absolutely see this is true- all I can say is it definitely is in my house. Tons of redirections, lots of limit se...tting and consequences- tons of frustration for me and hubs and lots of wondering about the future. In my house the redirections are pretty much unavoidable as they are necessary, but I also try to focus on the positives: you are kind, you care so much about others, you tried really hard, you did XYZ without having to be asked, etc. This is certainly something to consider for parents/teachers of kids with ADHD- and extra effort should be given to making positive comments! 24.01.2022 Curious Kids: how do babies learn to talk? (4 minute read) in The Conversation. Babies are born ready to learn and although they dont talk in the first wee...ks of life, they know how to communicate what they are feeling. They do this by crying. And it is something they do a lot before they produce words. This article explains in simple language how babies learn to talk. A short video (1:45 minute) reinforces the articles basic message. #language #SpeakUp4CommRights #speech #WeSpeechies #SLPeeps See more

23.01.2022 Most people do not know just how much is involved in learning to read, and let me tell you, it’s A LOT! I find myself frequently clarifying the difference in de...coding words and comprehending what is read, so I thought I’d make this visual! It’s important to note that speech and language skills are HEAVILY based in both of these! It’s also very common for a child to be an excellent decoder and have poor comprehension or vis versa. If your child is struggling with reading (most kids with communication delays and disorders will), I encourage you to talk with your child’s teacher and/or SLP to find out what you can do at home to support their literacy! 17.01.2022 FREE WORKSHOP AHEAD Calm the Chaos! Below is the link for a free online workshop I stumbled across to assist parents managing tricky kids. Let us know if any of you found it helpful! https://calmthechaosworkshop.com//the-family-success-plan/
15.01.2022 I know a lot of parents take comfort in these odds- 70-80% of late talkers catch up to their peers by the time they start school. That sounds great- and dont g...et me wrong, it IS amazing! But- look at the age- 30 months, thats 2.5 years. The 70-80% of kids that catch up are rapidly gaining words after that initial late start to talking- which is one thing to keep an eye on as kids get older. But even with that, they have been found to have lasting weaknesses in language skills. So even if you are taking comfort in those numbers, seek help. Get some assessment and speech therapy if its at all possible. Be proactive. Early intervention is the BEST thing you can do to help your child have the most positive outcome! See more
15.01.2022 Speech pathologists play an important role in helping children find a system to communicate and express their everyday needs, whether it be sign language, picture or symbol based (low tech) or using technology through communication devices such as an iPad app (high tech). Make an inquiry if you'd like to find out more - https://www.kidspotential.com.au/contact/
14.01.2022 One of my favorite quotes EVER!
14.01.2022 I know speech therapists feel STRONGLY about this, but it is because it is SO TRUE! Using pictures and signs helps kids with their words! I often use sign langu...age in my therapy with my verbal kids- and what I have noticed is that when they learn the verbal word + the sign, they are able to understand the concept faster! Pictures and signs also help kids learn abstract language (like asking for items not in eyesight, or understanding wh questions)! So NO just NO- using AAC does NOT stop a child from talking or make them lazy. drop See more

08.01.2022 This is SO helpful to know and share before school starts! If you have concerns about your childs language development, its a great idea to schedule an evaluation sooner rather than later!
