25.01.2022 At KIDS SPACE we love challenging the children’s thinking especially through STEM activities! This week we set an Engineering challenge to promote cognitive thinking, problem solving and creative design!

25.01.2022 We are about to begin renovations on our backyard , so this week the children took full advantage of engaging themselves in the outdoor environment before it won’t be accessible for the next few weeks... the children created a home/base out of pot plants, rocks, logs and long branches which they incorporated into their laser tag game, as well as hide and seek, using maps to find the objects Peer teaching was also evident as the children taught one another how to flip over and hang from the hammocks like a gymnast lots of encouragement and celebration for one another when they achieved their goal!

23.01.2022 This week at KIDS SPACE we introduced ‘all about me’ sheets, which prompted discussion amongst the children as we all got to learn more about one another. As we enter a new year we often see some anxiety from children as they adjust to a new class, new teacher and new friends. To help ease some of this anxiety we have been making play dough with essential oils, using it as a sensory processing tool to calm our minds and bodies. The children plan a lot of our program and this week they requested to play twister, musical statues and floor is lava. We were lucky enough to explore our community in one of our afternoon sessions, which involved a soldier crab hunt and gross motor activities. We also celebrated a birthday which everyone gets excited about

23.01.2022 Week 1 of April Vacation Care - Tuesday and Wednesday ... Cooking - The children have had a strong interest in cooking which is reflected in our vacation care program. We made ice-cream, cupcakes and chocolate cake to celebrate a birthday! Easter - we had an Easter theme this week and incorporated an Easter egg hunter and tie dyed eggs, which resulted in beautiful coloured paper towel and only a small amount was transferred to the egg. Nature exploration - loose parts i...n the sandpit for a tea party where the children collected flowers to add to their play. Finding soldier crabs to collect and make homes for in the sand all while exploring their natural habitat. Challenging our bodies - the children utilised their strength, agility, persistence and resilience in our outdoor adventures, which included rock hopping, puddle jumping, long walks, group games, rope climbing and tree swinging! 19.01.2022 Lots of thinking faces this week The children have been requesting to practice their mathematics skills so we introduced some fun activity sheets for them to solve throughout our morning and afternoon sessions. Mathematics is a methodical application of matter, it makes our life orderly and prevents chaos. Which maybe why some children are drawn to it Mathematics is also the power of our reasoning, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving ability.

18.01.2022 Today we braved the wind and explored our sense of touch as the children marked off their wheel with things that were soft, spiky, furry, wet etc. Park plays are always a hit and we took the coastline route home and discovered that our tree clay faces were still on the trees from last week, we also came across 3 different tree swings and a tree house which we all needed to test out! We challenged the children to create 3D objects using toothpicks and marshmallows, this activity was quite intricate requiring patience and persistence, best part was they got to eat their marshmallows afterwards! We also introduced blow painting with water colours, creating pretty cool patterns that looked like fireworks Wii Sports was also added to the program, with bowling and tennis being a favourite amongst the children!

18.01.2022 Over the past 2 weeks we have introduced a boxing circuit as a positive and interactive way for the children to learn a new skill. There is so much learning involved in this activity that we have used it as a stepping stone to work on other areas of development with the children... - Builds confidence - Coordination - Focus - Instills respect and discipline... - Builds strength - Emotional resilience - Persistence - Mathematical concepts - Rhythm - Builds relationships All while having fun! 18.01.2022 Another HUGE week at KIDS SPACE before and after school care! This week .... - We created a birthday wall children practiced their cutting skills by cutting out stars and a photo of themselves to put on their balloon month. This also opened up the conversation of who’s birthdays are close together. - Some of our younger children have been learning how to write numbers at school and we have been practicing both on paper as well as with chalk for our hopscotch. - We have a...lso been practicing our fine motor skills and endurance with stencil art. This has been very popular amongst the children. - We have reintroduced boxing into our program to promote self regulation, relieve some anxieties, keep our bodies strong and healthy, repetition with counting, coordination and persistence and perseverance. - With this crazy weather we have been having, we were lucky enough to venture out into the community in our afternoon sessions to explore, jetty jump, climb and search for animals. 16.01.2022 Week 8 This week we set up small loose parts with frames for children to design, create and imagine lots of creative thoughts were expressed. We kept the coloured magnetic shapes out again this week and it was good to see some of the children visit it for the first time! We were lucky enough to get some breaks from this rain and the children used this time for gross motor games eg pizza and bull rush as well as designing and planning their own obstacle courses. W...e celebrated harmony day in conjunction with the schools, through discussions at afternoon tea as well as colouring our rice in our sensory trays. This process became some what of an experiment as we used a few different techniques with trial and error to find out the best way to coat the individual pieces. We have begun to explore and discuss healthy eating habits which have been a topic of discussion over the past couple of weeks. Next week we have planned to have a tasting station in our morning sessions with 3 healthy foods starting next week with the letter A. The children were super excited to head to school in the wild weather we had on Thursday morning, it was an adventure! There is something special about huddling under an umbrella with your peers, crossing flowing streams of water, dodging mud and puddles on our way to school! See more

16.01.2022 Week 1 April Vacation Care - Thursday and Friday... Slime - always a popular experience! This time we had cosmic colours and a colour changing colour to explore! Best of all we get to take it home Easter - we continued with an Easter theme with paper bunny making, which challenged our fine motor skills, eggs and spoon races (one turn with a plastic egg and then next with a chocolate Easter egg that we got to eat ) and we made Hot Cross Buns! Challenging our bodies - We re...visited the tree swing to see if we could beat our swing scores from the previous time, we climbed, jumped and played gross motor games in between the rain showers on Thursday. 12.01.2022 It’s been a colour mixing kinda week

12.01.2022 In one of our afternoon sessions this week we decided to go in search for rocks that we can paint and drop around our local area. The children filled our bucket with an assortment of different sized and shaped rocks! Can’t wait to see the children add their creative touch and share them with our community!

12.01.2022 Last week the children used their creativity to decorate the rocks they collected the week before. And this week we ventured out for two afternoons to do rock drops at sunset beach! The children have hidden their rocks so that other children in our community can find them! We have written KIDS SPACE on the rocks and would love to hear if any of our community friends finds one Happy Hunting!

12.01.2022 Nature pedagogy Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural environment. We took a slower pace today to settle into parts of the walk we had done earlier in the week. This allowed the children to observe their surroundings and use their skills to become resourceful at creating their own activities... - The children discovered an island, which they dug trenches to try and allow the water to flow from one side to the other, this required a lot of team work and ...persistence! - As we moved along the children spotted a creature covered in sand, they quickly noted that it was dead but they were very curious to find out what it was. They were careful not to touch it with their hands and used sticks to carry it to the water to wash the sand off to see if they could identify it. No-one was certain as to what it was so the children hypothesised and shared their own thoughts and ideas. Baby fish, sea slug, sea snail and baby puffer fish were all the ideas that the children came up with! - We made our own clay earlier in the morning and took it with us, when we settled further along our walk, the children collect natural materials to create clay faces on the tree, this required planning, trial and error (to get the clay to stick to the tree) and lots of creativity! We LOVE vacation care days! See more

12.01.2022 Yay! Our backyard renovation is finally complete! lots of smiles all round this week as we are finally able to utilise our backyard space after 7 months of renovations! We created a small sandpit area with loose parts for the children to explore and use their creativity. Our grassed area is also much larger than it was previously, which allowed more room for gross motor games like stuck in the mud and pizza! We also played water limbo with the aim of not getting wet b...y the hose but that didn’t seem to be the case in the end Our planned experiences followed on from our observations from last week with our colourful magic cups and pattern making. We also kept our sensory rice trays again this week and added balloons for the children to fill to create their own stress balls. The children requested to experiment with different textures in the balloons, so each day we introduced a new element eg sand, cornflour and water mix. The children discussed which texture they liked the best, describing how it felt and the sounds each one made in the balloon. Not a week goes by without some kind of role playing experience initiated by the children. This week was teachers and students See more

12.01.2022 At KIDS SPACE we pride ourselves on building relationships with children, following their interests and extending on those interests to promote a deeper level of learning. This has been our main focus in our morning sessions, following a child’s interest in the country Estonia, we have used technology to research everything from the countries flag, currency, prime minister, famous foods, national anthems, war history to the debating chambers in parliament. This one child’s interest, has sparked the other children’s interest in wanting to research Australia, New Zealand and America, such a wonderful example of scaffold learning

11.01.2022 We have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather we had this week by exploring our surrounding bush land, both in our morning sessions and afternoon sessions When using the outdoor environment as part of our program we witness so much learning occur... - children develop reflective and inquisitive thinking along with problem-solving approaches in ‘real’ situations - we use the environment to encourage holistic development of children ... - children develop resilience and adaptability in occasionally adverse circumstances - we use the environment to encourage children to become more able to identify hazards and risks - for children to develop a love, appreciation and respect for nature - for children to develop self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem - for children develop collaborative-working and communication skills - we use the this environment to provide positive health benefits both physically and mentally and assist gross and fine-motor development We love where we live and we want each and every child in our care to experience it!

11.01.2022 Another week done at KIDS SPACE before and after school care. We were excited to add some of the new resources given to us from Port Stephens Council Thrive Kids. The children created colourful patterns, completed the stencil pictures and made their own game of magic cups with the resources. We also added sensory trays to our program to regulate our bodies. Over the week we added gems, beads, stars, number balls and wooden reindeers for the children to count and categories t...he items. We were lucky enough to venture out into our community to explore nature again this week. The children found logs to carry, soft flowers to touch, puddles to jump and free open space to run. Our spontaneous activities from children’s request were puzzles, role playing families, team games of soccer and boxing! We have also had a very busy week of taking bookings for the next school holiday period and we are once again blown away with the response and are completely booked out! 09.01.2022 Last day of vacation care for this week... We explored 2 different methods of painting today - Puff paint - which required the children to draw an outline of a picture then trace and fill with the paint, this required attention to detail, concentration and precise find motor skills. - Pendulum painting - we created our own pendulum using string, a teepee frame and a small bucket with a hole in the bottom. This turned into an experiment as the paint wasn’t coming out of the hole, the children problem solved as they suggested ways to make it work, make the hole bigger? thin the pain down with water?. We tried these suggestions and they worked! The children then selected their own colours and used different techniques to create their desired effect! We also had time for a quick park play and a movie with popcorn to finish our week!

03.01.2022 KIDS SPACE KINDNESS TREE Each afternoon when we sit down for afternoon tea, we discuss things that have happened that day or are on the children’s mind. This creates a safe space for children to open up about their thoughts and feelings with their peers. This week the children have discussed that they have been learning how to be kind to others at school by filling up their kindness buckets. So to promote this learning and incorporate what they are learning at school into our environment, we created a kindness tree. The children are encouraged to write down something they had done that day to fill another persons bucket up we will continue to add to our kindness tree over the coming weeks!
