18.01.2022 Driveway runovers have sadly increased in South Australia in recent years. Kidsafe SA, with the support of Cops for Kids, have developed a new driveway safety video. These tragedies happen quickly and it is often a relative that is reversing the car. Children aged 1-2 years old and under 1m tall are at the greatest risk, even those still crawling. Preventing driveway run overs is as simple as Supervise, Separate & See ... Supervise - always watch your children when the vehicle is to be moved. Hold their hand or hold them close to keep them safe. Separate - restrict access and separate play areas from driveways & garages See - be aware that all cars have a blind space behind them (some up to 15m), always walk around your car first before getting in. Driveway runovers are preventable. If you dont know, dont go. For more information visit https://bit.ly/kidsafe-drivewaysafety

18.01.2022 How do you keep baby safe and warm while they sleep? If blankets are being used, make sure to place your baby with their feet at the foot of the cot and bring bedding only up to babys chest. Use layers of lightweight blankets that can be easily added or removed according to the room temperature. Be sure to firmly tuck blankets in under the mattress to prevent loose bedding that can be dangerous for your baby. Alternatively, use a baby sleeping bag which eliminates the need... for bedding. Baby sleeping bags come in a range of warmth ratings and cant be kicked off by baby in the middle of the night. Kidsafe SA stocks a range of baby sleeping bags available here: https://kidsafesa.com.au/product-category/sleep/ For more information, call the Kidsafe Centre on (08) 8161 6318.

05.01.2022 *** Preventing Burns and Scalds this National Burns Awareness Month *** Winter is here and theres nothing better than staying in and snuggling with your kids. ...However, as we endeavour to keep ourselves warm we can expose ourselves to greater risks of burns and scalds. Did you know that 80% of serious burns and scalds to young children occur in the home? Due to this, Kidsafe is urging parents and carers to be vigilant to reduce the hazards as winter is a time of heightened burns risk. Kidsafe has just launched National Burns Awareness Month - an Australia wide campaign to raise awareness of the prevention and appropriate first aid measures for minor burns. To discuss this initiative were joined by Kidsafe South Australian CEO, Holly Fitzgerald, who is the national spokesperson for the campaign. We ask Holly questions including: Q1- What part of the home do the majority of serious burns and scalds to young children occur? Q2- What recommendations do you have for families to stop this from happening? Q3 - Can you provide us with an overview of Kidsafe and National Burns Awareness Month? Q4- How common are childhood burns and how many of these children aren't receiving the correct first aid treatment? Q5 - What should parents/carers do if a child does sustain a burn? Q6- Do you have any resources that parents can use to prevent burns in the home? Q7- Is it true that the rate of admission to Australian burns units for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population is more than triple that of the non-indigenous population?
