24.01.2022 It's been very busy at KCSG over recent weeks with Christmas fast approaching and our support services increasing to support the children and families within our community who have been affected by childhood cancer. Today we would really like to pause for a moment to let the community and our supporters know how much we truly appreciate their support and generosity which, at times, simply blows us away. We couldn't possibly do what we do without your kind support, your fun...draising and your amazing donations. So...from our hearts, from all here at KCSG we would like to say a BIG thank you for your continued support. But, more than that we would like to say 'thank you' for wrapping your arms around children, teens, families, parents, step-parents, carers, siblings and grandparents who are all facing the unimaginable....but never alone because of you. Thank you, with love from KCSG

22.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to our Dads, Grandads, and the father figures or male role models in our lives! KCSG Gladiators delivered gift bags yesterday in lieu of our usual Pop Up Shop to help kids on ward get ready for the big day today. The bags contained gifts with wrapping paper, scissors, sticky tape and card, and even textas to decorate the wrapping paper for our younger kids on ward. Today we acknowledge the awesome dads out there, making a difference in the lives of their ...families touched by childhood cancer. Troy Bauchop, a dad in our community has shared a video he made for awareness and a Dads perspective on his sons treatment. 21.01.2022 Jaime’s Beanie Box Project Jaime is a dedicated KCSG volunteer with her mum on a Friday at KCSG House. She is responsible for helping sort ward items ready for delivery and putting little gold hearts on all our food items, amongst other jobs. Jaime also loves arts and crafts, is a big fan of a warm and cosy beanie and is a childhood cancer survivor. Jaime’s passion for a good beanie is the inspiration behind our little project...’Jaime’s Beanie Box ... Each Friday Jaime and her mum will sort through the newly donated beanies and individually and hygienically seal them all, and label them, ready to top up our Beanie boxes. In addition to Clinic H, we plan on having another Jaime’s Beanie Box at KCSG House and on Ward 1A, so if you are at either of these places please help yourself to one of our cosy beanies, with love from Jaime & KCSG. This week we received an amazing donation of beanies from Heather Lindsey who drove up from Bunbury with a car full of donations from the Bunbury and Busselton community including these beanies! Thank you to all who contributed and Heather for delivering this amazing gift! If you would like to donate to our Jaime’s Beanie Box project, Jaime’s tips for a good beanie are that they are nice and soft, not to tight and donated with love. Any beanie donations can be delivered to KCSG House 5 Kimberley Street in West Leederville.
21.01.2022 Today we asked about the impact on teens. Teens often report they just want to be normal! when frustrated by breaks in school, jobs, and peer activities. Opportunities to go to parties, sporting events, school, and even hang out is often prevented by infection precautions, fatigue, pain, and nausea. In a time where teens are finding independence developmentally they often are relegated to the desires and decisions of their parents and health care providers during the d...iagnosis of cancer and during its treatment. Many have peers moving forward with graduations, learning to drive, exams and life, while their life is on hold. They are at greater risk of depression due to disruptions in their developmental trajectory, greater physical symptom burden, and increased likelihood of developing aggressive disease. #gogold #childhoodcancerawareness #hearourvoice #betheirvoice #gogoldforchildhoodcancer
21.01.2022 Today we want to send out a BIG thank you to this awesome young lady! We always knew Issabella Ferguson was a little superstar but this September we have been blown away by how truly amazing, inspiring and thoughtful she is. Bella decided she wanted to make a difference in the lives of her friends and other children who have been affected by childhood cancer and help raise awareness throughout September by making and selling her own childhood cancer awareness ribbons and pa...inted rocks at school. Not only did she do just that but she inspired her teachers, school community and friends to jump on board! Together they created the ribbons and rocks (Bella using her own birthday party to put everyone to work!) and set up a stall at school. With the help of her teachers and the other students at Bullsbrook College she raised and amazing $888 Bella didn't stop there...her beautiful heart inspired a HUGE donation of $5,000 from her supporters at Black Diamond Drilling. She also created a Facebook birthday fundraiser for KCSG and raised over $500. In total Bella raised $6,438 for Kids Cancer Support Group and we couldn't be more grateful!! Bella you are absolutely awesome and we are sending you and your supporters a great big thank you

20.01.2022 Today we asked about the positives, if any, you have taken from childhood cancer. Watching your child go through treatment changes you forever. You gain a new perspective on life and your child may teach you things about life through their battle. When you spend days in isolation and on ward you make connections with our parents that can become lifelong friendships. Connecting with other people who truly understand what you are going through. That know how you feel. ... Maybe situations that would have stressed or bothered you before pale into insignificance compared to what you have faced. You become more mindful of living in the present. #gogoldforchildhoodcancer #childhoodcancerawarenessmonth #childhoodcancer #hearourvoice #betheirvoice
20.01.2022 Monday 8th March 2021 is International Women's Day. Today we'd like to recognise the incredible women in our KCSG community. The Mothers, Stepmothers and carers who advocate for, nurture and support their children. For their sleepless nights, the tears they hide and the smiles they find because of the love for their children. The Grandmothers who find deep rooted strength and compassion. The aunts who offer support and laughter through the tears. ... We recognise the incredible women who became nurses, cleaners, social workers, doctors, oncologists and many more who passionately care for children affected by cancer and search for cures. We recognise the women who volunteer because they want to make a difference, who find the strength to give to others selflessly. Those women who fundraise and donate because they know it matters and know the impact just one person can have on the world. We quietly pause to recognise the incredible women who live each day without their child in their arms and find their way up that mountain because of their inspirational angels. To all the amazing women who lift and support our community, who selflessly give, who bring communities together, whose strength inspires and whose perspective, insight and limitless compassion is invaluable, we see you. Today we celebrate you. Tomorrow we will too.

19.01.2022 The journey of childhood cancer doesnt end when treatment ends and cancer affects the whole family. Childhood cancer survivors often experience late effects, both physical and psychological, secondary to their cancer or its treatment. Complications, disabilities, or adverse outcomes that are the result of the disease process, the treatment, or both, are generally referred to as late effects. When facing childhood cancer, family members need to cope with intense emotions, c...ommunicate effectively and renegotiate roles and responsibilities to accommodate the demands of treatment. The transition into survivorship brings its own set of challenges as families readjust to home and family life, and children re-enter school and social settings. Children may be years behind in school, and faced with the challenge of lasting attentional and memory problems, as well as hearing loss and other physical limitations. There is a constant fear of relapse which leaves families on guard #hearourvoice #beourvoice #childhoodcancerawareness #gogoldforchildhoodcancer
19.01.2022 International Childhood Cancer Day is a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer, and to express support for children and adolescents with cancer, the survivors and their families In honour of babies, children and teenagers affected by childhood cancer, families who are impacted by a devastating diagnosis, survivors who continue to fight side effects from treatment both mentally and physically and those who have been lost... We see you. We honour you. We speak up because of you. We are here for you.

They give so much of their time and put their heart and souls into everything they do. They filled these gift baskets with all your donations and these will be heading into the ward this weekend packed with love for a very special Easter Egg Hunt. 16.01.2022 Today we asked how childhood cancer impacts the family unit. Many of you responded that the family was separated for long periods while their child underwent treatment. A diagnosis is a major upheaval to family life. Families often have to relocate to be closer to hospital. Regional families sometimes can stay at Ronald McDonald House who provide accommodation for families with children in treatment. ... A major issue for many families comes when one parent must leave their job to take care of their child. Many families are forced to lose a much needed source of income. Caring for a sick child, hospital and doctor visits are only part of the need to have a parent at home. Depending on the childs specific illness and treatment, their immune system may be so compromised that they cant go back to their daycare, or sometimes even school. This leaves parents scrambling for childcare, often forcing a parent to stay home. Changes in life are the most common issue, including the changes in their family relationship, family dynamics and life regulations. The frequent hospitalization, clinic visits and treatments will hinder the life order of the family. Parents do not have time to accompany healthy siblings and they are often taken care of by grandparents or neighbors. Because mothers usually take care of children with cancer in hospitals, the familiar family dynamics and roles may be shattered. Fathers or older siblings must adapt themselves to the role of the mother. Siblings must also handle the extra family affairs and undertake additional responsibilities. #gogold #gogoldforchildhoodcancer #childhoodcancerawareness #hearourvoice #betheirvoice

15.01.2022 Siblings may experience a number of changes within the family when their brother or sister is diagnosed with cancer, including spending more time with extended family members or friends, not being able to play with their brother or sister in ways that they are used to and they may be required to take on new or extra responsibilities. Along with feelings of sadness, fear and anxiety, siblings may struggle with more complicated emotions such as guilt, jealousy, resentment and ...anger. At KCSG we run programs that include siblings to give support and include them. We have school holiday programs and playgroup for families where children can connect. We are here for the whole family. #gogoldforchildhoodcancer #gogold #hearourvoice #betheirvoice #childhoodcancerawareness

12.01.2022 This morning we asked about the financial impact a childhood cancer diagnosis has on families. Many of you stated that one parent is forced to give up work. A major issue for many comes when one parent must leave their job to take care of their child. Some are able to take leave from their current job, albeit usually unpaid. But many families are forced to lose a much needed source of income. Caring for a sick child, hospital and doctor visits are only part of the need to h...ave a parent at home. Depending on the childs specific illness and treatment, their immune system may be so compromised that they cant go back to their daycare, or sometimes even school. This leaves parents scrambling for childcare, often forcing a parent to stay home. Unexpected costs that can crop up include travel to and from hospital and the cost of childcare when one of the parents has to be at the doctor or hospital with their sick child. These added costs are compounded by the length of treatment. Redkite surveyed 471 families who had received financial assistance from the cancer charity between August 2016 and July 2018. The survey found almost half could not afford large, unexpected expenses. One third of families (33 per cent) could not afford their car registration, while 38 per cent could not pay gas, power or phone bills. More than half of families (52 per cent) had to give up work to be with their child after the diagnosis. Finding a cure for the disease is often the focus of cancer awareness, while the immediate financial burden of a diagnosis is less frequently discussed. #gogoldforchildhoodcancer #childhoodcancerawareness #betheirvoice #gogold

06.01.2022 Long time supporters and super-stylists Chrissy Palethorpe and Dannielle Todoroski felt inspired after helping out with our KCSG Mums High Tea. They wanted to do something extra in September to fundraise for KCSG and support children and families affected by a Childhood Cancer or Blood Disorder diagnosis, so they decided to pop some bubbles and hold a lunch for the ladies from their schools! There were huge smiles all round when they managed to raise a champagne popping $850...! From all of us at KCSG and the incredible kids and families we support we send you all a big thank you, you're amazing! #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth #thankyou #community

05.01.2022 KCSG Easter on Ward 1A It’s been a busy few days on Ward 1A starting with pizzas on Friday night and some more chocolate deliveries for all, with a couple of special chocolate gift baskets for our ward nurses On Saturday night we were back again for our traditional Easter crafts and movie and to deliver our Easter Egg Hunt gift bags. Thanks to everyone who was able to come along and share an Easter cupcake, join us in some Easter craft and help to try and solve our techn...ical difficulties with our Easter movie, we really appreciate the teamwork and whilst we were disappointed - our first ‘fail’ in our history of KCSG movies on the ward - it was lovely to see the children playing together and getting to chat to some of you. As we promised we will be back for a re-do! From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank Benji’s family for the really touching gesture of providing the beautiful Easter cupcakes from Petal's Cupcakery. We are reliably informed that they tasted as good as they looked. #becauseofBenji We hope everyone enjoyed their in-room Easter egg hunt and got their Easter gift reward and we hope all our families both on and off the ward had a lovely Easter. For some of you we recognise it was a tough holiday and we hope you managed to find some little moments of joy to carry you through. Please know we see you....with love from KCSG
05.01.2022 Today we asked about late effects of childhood cancer. Although survivorship has increased for some cancers, childhood cancer survivors are at risk of developing several possible late effects from their cancer treatment. This does not mean all children who have had cancer treatment will develop late effects. The risk will depend on several factors such as the type of cancer the child had, which treatments were given and the doses and the age when receiving the treatments. Che...motherapy and radiotherapy can cause problems later in life with the heart and lungs. Regular heart scans and tests are required throughout life. Radiotherapy treatment can also cause problems with bone growth. Most children will not have long-term problems with learning after their cancer treatment. However, some children, especially those who have had treatment for a brain tumour may have learning difficulties. They may need special attention at school to help them keep up with their studies. Some treatments will affect a childs sexual organs and functioning. This can lead to having an effect on sexual development and ability to have children. For a very small number of children who have a childhood cancer, there is the risk they will develop another different type of cancer (second cancer) later in life. New drugs and new uses for existing drugs, as well as improvements in radiation therapy and stem cell transplantation techniques, have greatly improved cure rates and remission periods for children. Research to improve outcomes for greater numbers of children is ongoing. There is an emphasis on tailoring therapies to decrease side effects as well as long-term and late effects. #gogold #gogoldforchildhoodcancer #hearourvoice #betheirvoice

04.01.2022 Our KCSG team on Bulldustnback are headed off on Day 2 today Today our team head off from Collie to Wagin. They will weave their way along dirt and dust-covered gravel tracks. Hopefully they follow their route notes very closely - these tracks are often not shown on maps! They will visit a regional school for lunch to show off their crazy cars to kids. Maybe there will be some more puddle jumping like this! #teamkcsg #bulldustnback #wanderoutyonder #kidscancersupportgroup #childhoodcancerawareness

03.01.2022 In this mornings post we asked what advice you would give to a family of a newly diagnosed child. Each year, over 950 children and adolescents (0-19 year olds) in Australia and 163,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. Finding out that your child has cancer can be devastating. Even if you have been told that cancer is a possibility, hearing this confirmed by a doctor can be shocking. Or, you might feel numb and that it isnt real. ... There are a range of emotions you might feel including anger, disbelief, sadness. Sometimes a diagnosis can feel like a relief, especially if your child has been unwell for some time and you have been worrying about whats wrong. Everyone feels and reacts differently. There is no right or wrong way to feel. We dont know what causes or how to prevent most childhood cancers. Its not something you or anyone has done and no one is to blame. Once your child has been diagnosed, you might need to travel away from home. You will receive a lot of new information about cancer and treatment. You and your child meet a lot of different health professionals. Its understandable if all this feels overwhelming, especially at first. This is normal. You will need some time and help to deal with the news. Trying to do this while trying to support your child and other family members can be hard. KCSG is run by mostly parents who have been through diagnosis of a child and understand those feelings. Our KCSG Connect Group for Families is a great place to connect with others that know how you feel and get it. Its a safe private space to talk with other parents about how your feeling. There are some questions when you join to confirm and keep our space safe for you. It is also where we share our ward activities and upcoming events https://www.facebook.com/groups/1650192715037698/?ref=share #betheirvoice #hearourvoice #childhoodcancerawareness https://www.facebook.com/groups/1650192715037698/?ref=share

02.01.2022 Meet our final KCSG Dad from our Bulldustnback team Gabe Lovering. Harvey the Cureageous Lion was diagnosed with ATRT at 17 months. Sadly at 3 years 10 months Harvey lost his fight. During this time we had the support of family and friends. This is not something available to so many cancer kiddies and their family during treatment, post treatment and, sadly, in time of bereavement and grieving. For so many reasons I am grateful to KCSG for their support to myself and my ...family. You can donate to Gabe and the team at the link below https://www.mycause.com.au///kids-cancer-support-group-inc
01.01.2022 Sophie Martin was inspired by her friend Issabella Ferguson as she watched her bring people together to help raise awareness for children affected by cancer. As friends go we think Bella hit the jackpot! Sophie has supported Bella throughout her journey with childhood cancer and beyond. Seeing the difference just one person could make and wanting to support her friend, Sophie decided to spend two weekends sharing awareness and informing others about Childhood Cancer awareness month at her brother's motor cross meet. She spent her time there collecting money for Bella's fundraiser and she raised a total of $370 for her efforts! We're pretty sure though that Sophie showing Bella the value of true friendship and support is a gift that is simply priceless. Thank you Sophie for your amazing support!
01.01.2022 This morning we asked what stage your childs diagnosis was and about your journey to diagnosis. Childrens cancers can be difficult to diagnose, as many symptoms can also be caused by other less serious conditions or injuries like the common cold or bumps and bruises from falls. Improving outcomes for children with cancer requires early and accurate diagnosis followed by effective treatment.... When identified early, cancer is more likely to respond to effective treatment and result in a greater probability of survival, less suffering, and often less expensive and less intensive treatment. Significant improvements can be made in the lives of children with cancer by detecting cancer early and avoiding delays in care. Cancer Australia released national data on childhood (paediatric) cancer stage at diagnosis for the period 20062014. The data, which marks a significant advance in the reporting of national cancer data, shows that the majority of the most common childhood cancers are diagnosed at a limited stage, that is before they have spread to other parts of the body. Knowing the distribution of stage at diagnosis and survival outcomes by stage will improve understanding of variations in survival, and will help to inform where best to invest cancer control efforts in terms of future research and targeted initiatives to improve outcomes for children with cancer. #gogold #childhoodcancerawareness #hearourvoice #BeOurVoice
