25.01.2022 How Kids College teaches lifecycles We have had silkworms at Kids College so the children can see how lifecycles work and are beginning to understand that the eggs hatch, the silkworm grows up, goes into a cocoon to transform into a silk moth and then dies. We show the children lifecycles when we grow flowers, veggies and herbs. We even have our own worm farm. We regularly have the animal farm visit us. Teacher Vera brought her guinea pigs to visit and we even got to see stic...k insects last year. We had the RSPCA visit us with a little doggie to teach our children about how to care for a pet. One of our favourite incursions is when we get the little chicken eggs hatching program. We have a very large underwater world at Kids College. Our fish tank allows the children to watch the tiny fish being born and how big they grow. We also have snails so the children can watch how the snails clean the tank. 24.01.2022 What does the 2020 NAIDOC week logo mean? Biripi/Bunjalung artist, Nikita Ridgeway created the designs on which the logo and artwork for National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2020 is/are based. The artwork’s design elements represent Australians together on a national journey of reconciliation, while paying homage to the past and recognising the present. Reconciliation does not have one representational colour or symbol. Nikita acknowledges this, and is inspired by the respect a...nd relationships First Nations peoples have for and with the natural world around them. She uses vibrant reds and purples to represent wild bush berries; browns and yellows for seeds collected for food; ochre for ceremony and culture; turquoise for our rivers and oceans; and black and brown for the scales and claws of animals that roam this land. The In this together logo shows Australians at different stages of the journey of reconciliation: the smaller dots and circles on the track represent the different stages of the journey of growth and constant connection. The larger circles represent community. The track represents the story and the many ways reconciliation is celebrated throughout Australia. The poster draws on Nikita’s other graphic elements that highlight many of those who have pioneered and advanced reconciliation over the years, whilst acknowledging the hope for those yet to learn and become involved. As Australians we are all inter-connected in so many ways; each individual has a part to play in our journey towards reconciliation, building our community of knowledge and respect. Education plays an important part in reconciliation and the poster highlights our ever-growing Narragunnawali and RAP communities, the vital parts they play in creating positive ripples through all walks of life. 23.01.2022 What happens for children when a death occurs? We highly recommend Maggie Dent’s article ‘Death through the eyes of a child. Death hurts. When we lose someone or something we love, every level of us hurts and is affected. There is nothing that can prepare us for exactly what happens when a sudden loss occurs because every single person responds differently. There is simply no one right way to respond. What happens for children when a death occurs? How can you support them th...rough the anguish and confusion? What can you do to prepare them in some way for this experience well before it happens? One thing you cannot do, no matter how much you wish you could, is take their pain away. 23.01.2022 What is National Reconciliation week? National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates mark two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey the successful 1967 referendum, which gave the Australian Government the power to mak...e laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to include them in the Census; and the High Court Mabo decision, which saw the concept of terra nullius overturned. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year due to COVID Australia are observing national Reconciliation week from 8-15 November 2020. 17.01.2022 Why Kids College loves bright colours? Children, like adults, are very aware of colour. Colour psychologists have linked colour with brain development, decreased absenteeism, enhanced productivity and even transition from childhood to adulthood. Colour is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is an energy having wavelength and frequency. Colour affects the mood in adults and more so in children. Colour psychology and its impact on a child’s learning abilities and behavio...ur is a much researched subject. How different colours can impact learning and memory in kids. Blue-Blue enhances creativity and stimulates a cool and relaxing environment. Red Red is the colour of passion and strong feelings of threat, love, or excess stimulus. In school rooms it can be used in combination with other colours as it can help in detail oriented or repetitive tasks. Yellow This is indeed the colour of happiness and sunshine for children. Yellow stimulates intelligence and is ideal for use in kids’ rooms, study rooms and play areas. Green-The colour of abundance can relax and contribute to better health in kids. Pink-This is a calming colour. It can lower heart rate. Purple-This colour ideal for kids as it is attention grabbing. Orange Many educational institutes use this colour as it enhances critical thinking and memory. Test rooms in this colour are known to enhance performance in exams. Early Childhood Education -Warm and bright colour schemes are ideal. 16.01.2022 Kids College summer menu 6 for week 19-23 March. Top tip for physical activity. Just like older children, physical movement should be encouraged in babies as much as possible. 15.01.2022 Toddler dancing is so funny.

14.01.2022 Today’s Kids College Childcare Home School TV is brought to you by Teacher Jen who is reading the story ‘Anzac Ted’. Anzac day can be a challenge for younger children but it is still important we bring awareness and respect to our Anzacs. This story offers a gentle child friendly approach. They'd see a hero, plain as day Who sits upon my bed. A hero, who saved me and you.... His name is Anzac Ted. Anzac Ted is Belinda Landsberry's powerful, poignant story of a little boy's teddy bear that was passed down to him from his grandfather. Battered, torn, missing an eye and an ear, he might look scary but he's got a great story to tell. For Anzac Ted went to war, keeping soldiers company and giving them comfort. This book has been chosen specifically as a gentle introduction to the ANZAC story and the importance of remembrance for a younger audience. Lest we forget. 13.01.2022 OUR PRACTICE IS EMBEDDED INTO EVERYTHING WE DO Our quality is consistent across our entire centre with each room and every educator in our team and reflects our philosophy and the principals of the early Years Learning Framework. We live our philosophy and ensure our core beliefs inform our practices everyday to embed them into every action. Our long-term friendships with our families are a testament to our ability to live our everyday lives true to our philosophy. I was once... told it wasn’t necessary to show new people around Kids College and you can easily see and feel this is a truly special place. 11.01.2022 Talking to children about death of a pet We as adults tend to want to shield our children from the realities of a pet’s death. However, these experiences are central to building our children’s resilience. Recently we lost our beloved pet bearded dragon, Raa. Like any learning, we can help guide our children through their loss. With such a valuable teachable moment we have chosen to discuss Raa’s death with the children. ... Discussing the loss of a pet slowly builds an ability to cope with big emotions. A child’s brain does not have the mental maturity of adults and we need to help them build their skills and manage their feelings. These skills need to be taught and we specialise in social emotional learning at Kids College actively working each day to help children in one of the most important learning areas. This is a hard topic for anyone to discuss, please feel free to stop by the office for a chat anytime. For more information on why we have pets and what children can learn from them please see our ‘Pets are good for children at Kids College Childcare centre.’ https://www.kidscollege.com.au/talking-to-children-about-d/ With love, laughter and learning from your friends in the 'village it takes to raise a child' Teacher Jen and the Kids College Childcare family

11.01.2022 Weekends are a busy time for our maintenance crew! This weekend they installed our new entrance station for temperature checks, hand sanitiser and a iPad for logging in attendance. 10.01.2022 Rest in Peace Raa February 2015 - November 2020 Raa was very old and she has died. She has gone to pet heaven... We are very sad that we can’t see Raa anymore. It’s ok to be sad or mad. We remember her happy smiley face as she enjoyed watching us all play and how she loved to dance to music. We have said goodbye to Raa and still love her very much. 06.01.2022 What we enjoyed and learn't during Bedtime Stories challenge at Kids College Before we started the story, we explained to the children who is telling the story and did our Kids College acknowledgement of country. An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country. It can be given by both non-Indigenous people and Aboriginal and Torres Strai...t Islander people. Our version of our Acknowledgement of country for our adults and for our children supports us to respect and value our nations elders. We used the Map of Indigenous Australia (AIATSIS) to first show the children where Robin comes from - Warlpiri country. Then we showed them Arrernte country on the map because Robin is a visitor on Arrernte Country he is acknowledging the country and the Arrernte people of Mparntwe. We found the Country our centre is on using the AIATSIS map and acknowledged the Country we are meeting on, the Whadjuk Noongar region. We then enjoyed the film together and discussed how the little Joey would be feeling and what he should do. We also made and did a puppet show with the characters from the story. We listened to the song and enjoyed trying to learn the new words. We used the pictures to bring the story to life. A euro is a type of macropod also known as a Wallaroo similar to ta Wallaby or a kangaroo. Bush turkey is a type of bird that can be found on Arrernte county. A perentie is a type of lizard, similar to a goanna. Spinifex is a type of grass. Arrernte is hilly country. https://www.kidscollege.com.au/kids-college-childcare-cele/ With love, laughter and learning from your friends in the 'village it takes to raise a child' Teacher Jen and the Kids College Childcare family

02.01.2022 The Lost Joey by Robin Japanangka Granites. This is a story from Robin Japanangka Granites. At the beginning of the story, Robin shares that he is a Warlpiri ("wawl-puh-ree") man from Yuendumu ("yun-du-mu"). He gives an Acknowledgement of Country to the Arrernte ("Uh-rrahn-da") people of Mparntwe (mm-barn- doo-uh) (Alice Springs) where this story is filmed. The story shared by Robin Granites shares lessons about the importance of family and knowing your Country and your con...nection to place. Robin also shares a song in Warlpiri, that tells of the travelling kangaroo as he looks for his mother and tries to comprehend his connection to Country to allow him to get back to his mother. Acknowledgement of country for the First Nations Bedtime Stories Challenge We’d like to acknowledge the Traditional owners of the lands on which this resource was created, and acknowledge the enduring connection of the First Nations people, communities and Ancestors who have been looking after this land since time immemorial. We specifically acknowledge the Elders, knowledge holders and storytellers who have been a part of this initiate. https://www.kidscollege.com.au/kids-college-childcare-cele/ With love, laughter and learning from your friends in the 'village it takes to raise a child' Teacher Jen and the Kids College Childcare family

01.01.2022 Why does Kids College have astroturf? Eco friendly Today, communities know the importance of teaching children conservation methods early, and there is no better way to start than using eco-friendly materials on our playground. The low-maintenance characteristics of artificial grass means that less of our natural resources are wasted since there is no watering or weekly mowing. ... Safety Artificial grass reduces the chances of injuries. The rubbery mat and thick grass absorbs the impact during a fall and reduces the chances of bone breaks. It cannot slip from underneath tiny feet like rugs often do. Natural lawns are pretty easy to dig up and are often uneven which can cause plenty of falls. Artificial lawn is installed on a compacted surface that is perfectly straight. Artificial grass can offers an ATSM Safety rating of up to 12 feet when it is installed over a proper base. Allergen friendly Children are pretty sensitive to allergens. Pollen, grass seeds, fine hairs on grass, insects, and dust are all found on natural grass that can cause allergic reactions in some kids. Artificial grass is much healthier since it is hypoallergenic and doesn’t have any pollen, grass seeds and natural hairs. The grass also isn’t the best habitat for insects, which also reduces the chances of children getting stung or bitten by insects. Beautiful all year round An artificial lawn is pretty easy to keep intact. There is no need to ever mow lawn or trim the hedges and we don’t have to irrigate ever. This saves heaps of time and keeps our play area will look brilliant all year round. Cleaner Environment Natural lawns can get pretty messy. They cause terrible grass stains on clothing and when you wet your grass or during the rainy season your lawn can get pretty muddy. A faux lawn is naturally clean with no mud, bugs or other elements that can stain clothing. Kids Can Play All the Time With natural lawn, you always have to wait for the lawn to dry off before kids can play. Ready for play at any time and it looks great irrespective of the season. Strong and durable Artificial lawn is very strong and very durable. These lawn types can even handle heavy traffic during events. Normal lawn, on the other hand, will die out and grow dull if children are constantly trampling the grass. Beautiful look Artificial lawns look fantastic. With these grassy green rugs, you can easily transform any dull room, outdoor area or even indoor corner into a beautiful kids play area. Flexible and always ready Artificial lawns can be kept on roll form so you can roll it out or up whenever you need. This flexibility makes it easy to create children’s play areas wherever you might need some. Inclusive of everyone. Perfect for all age groups, wheelchairs and other people with mobility needs can access our playground with ease. With love, laughter and learning from your friends in the 'village it takes to raise a child' Teacher Jen and the Kids College Childcare family
