25.01.2022 You could easily be mistaken for thinking this drawing is referring to our current Covid-19 situation. But the illustrator, May Gibbs - one of my absolute favourites by the way - drew this over one hundred years ago in response to the Spanish Flu! I think I need a stylish eucalyptus leaf mask - it would make for easy breathing! Snugglepot and Cuddlepie is an Aussie classic that seems to be little known by the younger generation - but it is timeless, and a lovely escape from modern tech and isolation boredom. Afterwards why not go for a walk to your local park or reserve and see if you can find some Gumnut Babies, or the sneaky Bad Banksia Men?
24.01.2022 The Super Pollinators workshops have been buzzing about schools, council events, holiday care & community programs for over 4 years. Together we have made over 3000 insect hotels! We provide workshops about Aussie native bees throughout the greater Sydney region. Our school programs are designed to meet curriculum outcomes for stages 1-3. Watch this space for upcoming community workshops or if you would like to inquire about workshops for your school or event, check out our website for more details or give us a call.
22.01.2022 This is the cocoon of a faggot case moth (Clania ignobilis) that I found this morning. Isnt it cool! Inside the amazing stick creation is a silken cocoon hiding a caterpillar. Check out this fantastic website to learn more http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/psyc/ignobilis.html If you look closely you can also see some little white attachments. These are not aerials for wifi - but the delicate eggs of a lacewing! For other great websites that can help you discover the biodiversity of your area, visit the resources and links page of the Kids Connecting Nature website - and please let me know of any others I should add too.
22.01.2022 Only 2 more sleeps...... I am busting for the big reveal this Friday. I am so very honoured and humbled and THRILLED that A Hollow is a Home is being considered for the CBCA 2020 Book of the Year Eve Pownall Award. The other 5 books in this category are absolutely outstanding - personally I am in awe of Wilam: A Birrarung Story by Aunty Joy Murphy and Andrew Kelly - the illustrations by Lisa Kennedy are stunning. Thanks to the CBCA for including me in this most amazing book j...ourney. Good luck to all - we are all winners already just for having our vision and hard work now in print. A huge thanks to Astred Hicks and the CSIRO team! Tune in this Friday October 16 at 12 noon AEDT. The announcement video will premiere on the CBCA's Youtube channel at this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/ and the CBCA homepage https://cbca.org.au #cbca2020, #csiropublishing, #astredhicks, #childrensbooks

21.01.2022 In response to the alarming rate of insect decline, a fantastic initiative The B & B Highway, aims to create pollen booths via schools to connect pollinator habitat across our urban landscapes. The plan is simple - plant species attractive to pollinators, create nesting opportunities for pollinators (such as insect hotels), throw in a native bee hive, and bit by bit as more habitats like these are provided it becomes a 'highway' or corridor for pollinator movement. Pollinators include birds, bats, possums, gliders, bees, beetles, butterflies.... just to name a few... Find out more about the B & B highway at https://foodfaith.com.au/bbhighway or have Kids Connecting Nature provide an incursion at your school as a first step to revving your students up for the highway!

19.01.2022 Kids Connecting Nature is leaping into 2019 by finally launching our Face book page! Yippee! We would like to invite kids (of all ages), schools, community groups and government organisations to share their environmental projects, interesting natural encounters, cool websites or ideas - however small - to inspire others to create habitat, nurture nature, and marvel at the biodiversity around them.
19.01.2022 Bees in Space! We are extremely excited to offer The Super Pollinators Workshop as a virtual option. The Super Pollinators workshop is a curriculum linked hands-on learning experience about Australian bees.... THEMES: Paddock to Plate, Pollination, Life Cycles, Mini Beasts, Sustainability, Habitats, Ecosystems & Biodiversity. Students enjoy a dynamic LIVE virtual presentation followed by building insect hotels that have been buzzed straight to your school - anywhere in Australia. We understand the current Covid situation is making it tricky to plan. So we present The Super Pollinators in Cyber Space as a safe and practical alternative to our popular Super Pollinators Incursion, and Plan Bee Excursion at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Head to our website to learn more www.kidsconnectingnature.com.au. #bees #biodiversity #royalbotanicgardensydney #enviroed #primarycurriculum #pollinators #scienceforkids #nativebeesaustralia #australianwildlife #educationaustralia

15.01.2022 While we are confined to our own neighbourhood in Covid isolation, it is the perfect time to checkout the local real estate - hollows! No matter where you live in Australia there is likely to be a hollow home near you. How many can you find? Download the Hollow Hunt Survey in my book to start recording your finds!
12.01.2022 Super exciting news today! Thank you so much to the Wilderness Society for shortlisting my book. A huge thank you to the amazing publishing team at CSIRO for your hard work and belief in this book. High five to Astred Hicks for the stellar illustrations. All the books on the 2020 shortlist are fabulous. Well done to all the authors, illustrators and publishing teams. This body of work is a huge win for environmental education. Great stuff!!
10.01.2022 Every bit helps our wildlife -
08.01.2022 Every time I venture outside for a walk in the bush I almost always find something cool. Today I had an exceptional discovery - a beautiful bush cockroach about 5cm long stopped to pose for me!

04.01.2022 Invertebrates are an important ecological indicator - these spineless creatures are the backbone of the ecosystem! Kids Connecting Nature is excited to launch a new incursion program - Magnificent Minibeasts. Magnificent Minibeasts is designed for stages 1-3, where students will assess their local habitat and discover how well it provides for the invertebrates that live there, as well as the other creatures that rely on them too. We will conduct an invertebrate search using a variety of methods and check out some of the cool minibeasts we find under magnification. We have amazing models and a huge collection of preserved invertebrates to show off as well. To find out more, including all syllabus links, please visit our website!
03.01.2022 Never in my life did I think I would have the opportunity to read to a Palm Cockatoo! Thanks so much to the awesome Taronga zoo crew and The Children’s Book Council Australia for a brilliant day of filming - to meet many of the animals who require a hollow and provide a few classroom tips for kids on writing factual content. The CBCA theme this year is ‘Curious Creatures Wild Minds’ and the day certainly lived up to the name! #cbca2020 #csiropublishing #astredhicks #childr...ensbooks #tarongazoosydney #australianbiodiversity #enviroed #hollowsashomes See more
03.01.2022 Its fungi season in Sydney! Look out for fabulous mushrooms and toadstools - the fruit of the fungi - they can pop up in all sorts of funny places and some even glow in the dark! Beneath the surface the fungis mycelia branch out like a spiders web. Some fungi attack trees - producing chemicals that break down the heartwood at the trees core. Thanks to this process and the munching of invertebrates such as termites they help to create tree hollows - homes for wildlife. Other types of fungi provide a nutrient boost to trees as they link the trees roots via their mycelia - sharing the goodies -natures version of the wood-wide web! How many funky fungi can you find?
01.01.2022 Buzzing to do something crafty? Now is a great time to build an insect hotel! Several of the almost 2000 Aussie native bee species will nest in a hotel especially if you provide one with different size cavities and let the patrons decide which suits them best.... Leafcutter bees, masked bees, and resin bees may all use the hotel simultaneously. Check out the info sheet attached for all the details about becoming an hotelier and making your place bee paradise. Most Australian bees are what we call solitary species meaning that each female is reproductive and responsible for building her own nest. In the cooler regions, as the temperature falls, the females die and their offspring remain dormant in the nest over winter, emerging next spring to start the cycle again. So get in ahead of the buzzy season and boost bee business by planting an array of tasty flowering treats, then dot a few small hotels close by when the warm weather returns. Beeutiful!!
01.01.2022 I am extremely excited and humbled to have my book A Hollow is a Home shortlisted for the Childrens Book Council Australia Eva Pownall Award for Information Books for 2020. My book sits alongside some very impressive titles indeed and I congratulate all the other authors, illustrators and the publishing teams that are represented in the 2020 shortlist for childrens literature! Here is the review from the CBCA to accompany my shortlisting https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2020 C...heck out A Hollow is a Home at https://www.publish.csiro.au/book/7729#forteachers Thanks to the awesome team at CSIRO for their support, guidance and belief in this project. 01.01.2022 Kids Connecting Nature had a great day at Taronga Zoo meeting the environmental champions of the future! With so much challenging our natural world it is heartening to see students being proactive about finding and implementing solutions. Today's workshops covered a number of topics including biodiversity, waste management, composting and of course pollinators. Thanks to Taronga for hosting this event!
01.01.2022 Look who is making a nest in my insect hotel - a fire tail resin bee! She has been busy gathering resources and building her nest for the past 2 weeks. Kids Connecting Nature are offering a number of community workshops over the next few months where participants can make a hotel to attract their local species. The first to be announced is being hosted by Mosman Council on Thursday 11th April from 6.30-8. Tickets are free, but numbers are strictly limited - so jump in early. Visit https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/make-your-own-insect-hotel- to get your ticket now! Bookings will open shortly for a kids workshop in the July school holidays with Hornsby Council. Stay tuned for details about this and other upcoming events.
