21.01.2022 Beginnings and Endings. At time of year, especially those with children in primary or high school, there are a lot of endings Endings of being in that class, with their teacher, with their friends..... For some (in our house), the complete ending of being in primary school, all those years, all those connections, it really does go so quick!! I remember clearly those kindy days they’re so little! And with that ending comes the new beginning, starting high school. This will involve lots of new changes, connections, routines, everything! And change can be exciting but also challenging, scary, the unknown... For those that have endings, try and cherish all that has been. Don’t get too busy thinking of the next For those with Beginnings, especially those BIG Beginnings kindy, pre-primary, high school. This will be another chapter, another adventure, the first of the firsts, again just try and take it in, don’t rush. These are years that will stay strong in your memories. I think I’ve said in previous posts, definitely OK to wear sunnies to cover the tears, at the beginnings and the endings xx Kate x
18.01.2022 Yes!! After so many years in child care, my list of songs is lengthy - Skiddamarink - I love you (my most favourite ever!)... - Down in the Valley (a transition song) - 5 little elephants balancing - Put your right foot in... Who else remembers these songs? Or sings them still When my kiddos were little they would also love lullabies at bed time Music is powerful, creates connection, memories, evokes emotion (can be soothing OR stimulating) and our brains LOVE the rhythm and predictability. Now days the playlist is a little different (Thunderstruck AC/DC this arvo) Kate x

12.01.2022 After an amazing, adventure filled and (personally difficult year), I’m off on a much needed mini-break with my two besties! Taking my own advice of self-compassion and looking after ourselves, as they say ‘you cannot pour from an empty cup’ Happy FriYay! Hope you get to do some cup-filling this weekend
10.01.2022 Have posted this before but think it’s worth a re-post

09.01.2022 Today was the very last session with Useless Loop Primary school, for the Mindfulness and Well-being program! I always feel a little bit of sadness when this comes to an end, over the 4 weeks I love getting to know the students, the comments they make, and am constantly amazed of how they remember the parts of their brains like Pre-frontal Cortex and Amygdala! In the final session we look at Kindfulness...... This is where we first look at being kind to ourselves, and also our Values. Values work (from ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is important, through this children learn what THEY value, what’s important to them, and some of the supports around them. This can hold them steady in those teen years, of finding their self- identity. Next we look at being kind to ourselves. This can be quite tricky! Quite often we may find it hard to accept a compliment or can have unkind thoughts running through our minds. For children, they can get quite down on themselves, particularly in hard times, and negative thinking can start. We want to start a practice of self-compassion, and thinking and writing down kind thoughts about ourselves. Finally, we Fill the class Bucket We encourage a culture of Kindness, writing down or drawing kind statements about our classmates, and how this can fill them up and make them feel good. My Whiteboard drawing still hasn’t improved, and technology was NOT my friend today (talking to a black screen, though the students could see and hear me, was a little disconcerting ) Thank you so much Useless Loop Primary School, it's been a pleasure to 'meet' and work with your students and staff Kate x
