21.01.2022 Hi Karate Parents Ive just finished emailing out and printing all the grading forms for this term. You should all have an email in your inbox with one of three notices.... 1) An invitation to the Term 1 Week 9 grading or, if you or your child wasnt quite ready for this term 2) A notice of grading intention saying which grading we would like you or your child to aim for. or, if you or your child is grading to green or above 3) A notice of grading intention saying that we wish to send you to the special Term 2 Week 7 grading to be run by Kyoshi Alex himself. We will have forms printed to hand out during class. From now on if a student isnt quite ready to grade this term we will tell them which specific grading they should aim for. Hopefully they will be ready for the Term 2 Week 3 Grading which is a much shorter wait than a whole term! 18.01.2022 Check this out guys - a little old but really inspiring stuff :-) Theres some comments in there about starting slowly (even just 5 minutes at a time) and finding what the kids enjoy that is so true. Also being aware that some kids may take a few tries to just get onto the mats is really true as well! Weve got 101 strategies to help them out but sometimes they just need time to get used to the new environment and they just cant be rushed :-) Because of this rather than u...s doing a trial offer with a fixed number of classes we do unlimited classes for 4 weeks straight. That way if your child is really nervous you can come every day for a week or two to get them into the swing of things before you settle into regular training times that suit your schedule. Last year we developed a quiet class format with a parent who has experience with Autism. Were currently working with Autism WA to improve these classes and will trial these specially designed classes in the Term 2 Holidays at Baldivis High. Ive some training as an Occupational Therapist from way back and weve a great network of parents with a lot of experience in this area to draw on. If youd love your child to grow into a black belt karate practitioner but your worried about how your child would cope in structured classes give us a call on 0408 755 789 and wed be happy to discuss specifics or get you in contact with one of our instructors. 10.01.2022 Hello! Poppy's Mum Katarina emailed me yesterday asking for a link to a video of the Kata Tensho so Poppy could practice it for grading. This reminded me (again!) that after creating the Youtube channel more than 2 1/2 years ago I still haven't done videos on Tensho or Sanchin (or Sanchin-Tensho for that matter). ... In my defence these are very important Kata in our style of Karate and more than a little daunting to video! But, of course, one should never let perfect become the enemy of the good :-) I've added three videos to our Kata playlist Tensho Sanchin Sanchin Tensho These will hopefully clarify any questions those of you beginning these Kata may have. 07.01.2022 ATTENTION MUMS Could You Defend Yourself and Your KIDS If You Had To? . We specialise in Martial Arts for the whole family and run regular Adult classes with a focus on Kata and -real- self defence. Kata is a traditional martial arts teaching tool used for hundreds of years tracing back to ancient China and India.... Every grade (belt colour) in the training program has its own Kata that a student focuses on during that period of their training with that Grade Kata having its own emphases and set of applications for use in self defence. Our style is Goju Ryu which translates as the "Hard Soft Discipline" or the "Hard Soft Fighting System" as founded by Sensei Chojun Miyagi in Okinawa at the beginning of the last century. Kata has been called the Expression of Karate and Moving Mediation with hard fast powerful dynamic sections and slow gentle flowing sections similar to Tai Chi. The movements we find in Kata give us a vocabulary of movements we can apply in self defence . Our Adults classes are 80% female, in keeping with our focus on -real- self defence we teach situational awareness, strategies for de-escalating while preparing to defend yourself and zones of physical danger. We work collaboratively with students to discuss situations they are worried about and what to do in those situations. We keep it light hearted, have a laugh and are very careful not to distress anyone that may have had a bad experience in the past. . This week our focus was on the White Belt Kata, Kata Sanchin and Kata Tensho (Koryu Kata of Goju Ryu). We explored the various movements in these Kata, discussed the rules for interpreting the purpose of those movements and applied them to common situations like being grabbed by the hair, being pushed up against a wall and held, and being choked from behind. . Our Dojo is all about families, our adults all have kids of their own and weve a great kids section for them to hang out in while you train. Weve regularly got 6-10 kids playing together while parents train so theyll probably make some friends too. We get a lot of great advice from the Occupational Therapists and other specialists that run these programs and have a blast doing it. 04.01.2022 Unlike a lot of activities Karate needs no equipment and very little space. At the core of our training is Kata. Kata is a choreographed set of movements which wraps up a series of techniques into logical sequences we can rote learn and later analyse to find applications in self defence. The Kata we teach were created by the great masters of Karate, Miyagi Sensei and Funakoshi Sensei who drew from styles and teachings dating back hundreds and hundreds of years to mainland Chi...na and India. Our Kata is taught in a distinct sequence to gradually build skills in a layered fashion. Modern teaching methods refer to this as Scaffolding. The sequence in which we teach Kata is almost directly taken from Gogen Yamaguchi Senseis "Kyohan" or "Master Text". The modifications we have made to this text have been designed to break complex techniques into more readily learned pieces to support training of the young and those with special needs. Of course Martial Arts needs dedication and we encourage our students to practice at home. To support our kids we have recently moved the majority of our online training materials to a public Youtube channel so they may access it using the TV in the lounge, Playstation, XBox etc and not be restricted to the previous website we used. Head to Youtube and search "Family Martial Arts and Fitness" or hit the link below. Youll find instruction on how to perform our Kata and selected Techniques. I informally surveyed our kids earlier this year and nearly all of them had Youtube access. My hope is that they will take some time away from their regular viewing to practice using these videos.
