24.01.2022 Who has heard of Triple P before? Triple P is program developed by a clinical psychologist, Professor Matt Saunders. It is a parenting program designed to help you raise happy confident children, learn the skills to manage poor behaviour, give you guidance of setting appropriate rules and routines, encourage desired behaviours in your children, feel confident that you are doing the right thing and most importantly, allow you to take care of yourself as a parent. This is such ...a wonderful program that I have done myself! Whether you are working with or raising children, it is hard work! Even the best parent/therapist/carer can only be helped by getting tips. The best part yet, ITS FREE to everyone in Queensland and they have an online program you can do from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. Jump on their website and take a look - just google "Triple P". Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist.

24.01.2022 How fortunate that we have such a good handyman that spent his Sunday fixing our walls at Springfield... our awesome reception chairs had a bad habit of denting the walls, not anymore. Thanks Phil All For Kids Therapy

23.01.2022 Good news! We are now going to be running our Prep for Prep group at our Springfield Lakes and Holland Park West clinics in Jan 2017. PLUS we will be running our handwriting groups for kids Prep-4. Give us a call to find out more - 33499234.

23.01.2022 OT week maybe be done, but we have more great art to share! Where do we do OT? We have 2 clinics, one at Holland Park and one at Springfield, but we also provide services in homes, schools, kindergartens, via telehealth and in the community. We recognise the importance of transferring OT skills to daily life, and feel that by providing OT in a range of settings, we can support kids in making the connections from theory to action!

22.01.2022 Week 3, Term 1 done and dusted. A lot of our kids were feeling the post holidays blues this week. Brisbanes 35+ degree weathers certainly didnt help! This weekend look after yourselves and your little ones. Do something to bring back the calm and fun. Here are our suggestions: - Take time to do deep breathing as a family and add 5minutes to talk about your favourite things. - Play a game of silly faces (who can make the silliest face and make the other person laugh). - Fi...nd a game you and your little ones both love. Remember its important to do things together you both enjoy. Sometimes we fill our time doing things they want or love and forget that we like to have fun too! Let us know what you are doing this weekend to help restore the sanity and joy this weekend! Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist.

22.01.2022 Parents and their children (6-9 years old) with and without autism who have sentence speech, and who can commute to the Griffith University Logan Campus are inv...ited to participate in research on memory and learning in children with and without autism. This project aims to contribute to further understanding of autism by providing a baseline comparison which includes memory recall and factors which may impact on memory recall. 22.01.2022 Low muscle tone. What is it? Why is my teacher telling me my child has it? How is it different from motor skills? You wouldnt be alone in thinking that low tone is about muscle strength BUT its not about that at all. Low muscle tone relates to the tension of the muscle, its all about the amount of tension required to maintain positions and allow for controlled and coordinated movements. Some of you may have heard me say it but when I think of muscle tone I think of a slin...ky it can stretch and as it stretches it becomes floppy as the tension is low, think of low muscle tone like that stretched slinky. Children with low muscle tone feel or look floppy. Thee kids tend to fatigue quicker, can look quite clumsy or uncoordinated and often you will see them struggling to hold seated (unsupported) seating positions for long periods of time (and as a result lean of things or w sit). This is important to maintain a good level of general fitness and strength, as maintaining fitness and strength will mean that physically demanding activities will be easier, as it would be for all of us. But, for people with low muscle tone, it will mean a little bit more effort to reach that level of fitness initially, and then to maintain it there. So regular rest breaks are also very important! Here are some suggestions to help your little one with low muscle tone: Swimming, Trampolining, sports that are non-competitive as there is no-one else to compare yourself too, obstacle courses, crawling activities and animal walks. Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist.

18.01.2022 Research has shown that as far as the brain is concerned, reading is language; so if a childs language abilities can be improved, theyll find it easier to lea...rn to read. A childs experience before formal education begins is vital. Brain development research shows that the range of experiences in the first five years is crucial. Five areas have been found to be most relevant for childrens school and reading readiness: 1) Language and cognitive development. 2) Communication skills and general knowledge. 3) Social knowledge and competence. 4) Emotional maturity. 5) Physical health and well-being. SpeechNet provides assessments & therapy for children that may be presenting with slow to develop speech & language skills. Books are vital so keeping reading to children from birth to late primary .... and beyond!

09.01.2022 This year seems to be flying past! Its been such a busy year at Kids Play OT but finally we can share just one of the many exciting new things that have been happening here. OUR SECOND OT ROOM. Some of you may have already experienced this wonderful room! Its a great space for our little ones who get overwhelmed by the bigger gym room or older ones who need to focus without the temptation of the hammock!! This means we can now have 2 OTs working at the same time and we can cater for the wide range of little people that visit! What do you all think? Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist.

08.01.2022 Hi all, As you know, the health of our clients, our team and the community are first and foremost our focus. With the cold and flu season drawing closer and with COVID-19 occurring we wanted to update you on the impacts to your sessions and the practice. What are we doing about COVID-19 and to prevent colds and flus in general?... As per the requirements from the Department of Health, all team members who have been overseas in the past 30days are excluded from returning to work for 14 days from the date they returned to the country. This is also the case for team members who have been in contact with a confirmed case or who are having pre-cautionary testing (please note that at this time, we have NO team members in any of the above categories). Generally, any team member who is feeling unwell or showing signs or symptoms of being unwell, will remain at home. What can you do? We request you follow the guidelines and recommendations set by the Department of Health and self-exclude if you have been to any of the countries with exclusion periods or have been in contact with someone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19. We also ask that you not attend the practice when you are unwell regardless of whether you think this may be COVID-19 or a cold or flu. Please make sure you are practicing excellent hygiene as hand washing and containment of bodily fluids continue to be the best defence against the spread of cold, flus and COVID-19. Cancellations While Kids Play Occupational Therapy does have (and enforce) our cancellation policy, if you cancel outside of the 24 hour period or cancel due to sickness, we will take your circumstances into consideration and establish appropriate action (such as waiving the cancellation fee charged). We do however, request you provide us with as much notice as possible as we have a lengthy list of people waiting for appointments. If you do wish to keep your appointment and would like to instead complete a video session with your clinician, please feel free to contact the practice and we will be more than happy to arrange this for you. Please provide at least 24 hours notice for this where possible so we can set up the online session. At this time, there are no Medicare rebates for online sessions (unless you have an approved telehealth referral), however should this change, we will notify you. We will continue to keep you updated if there are any changes or concerns, however if you have any difficulties at all, please do not hesitate to contact us on (07)33499234. Stay safe! The Team at Kids Play Occupational Therapy.

07.01.2022 Did you know kids learn through play? There is a reason we are called Kids PLAY Occupational Therapy. Play is vital for children to help their brain development, motor skills, communication/language skills, social skills, emotional skills and cognitive skills (e.g. problem solving, intelligence, working memory, organisational skills). ALL learning is fuelled by play and play facilitates a childs ability to learn! Play is so diverse and whilst there are typical styles of pl...ay for various ages it is important to always remember play can be done in many ways with many different things it can be body related (running, jumping, rolling, swinging, dancing), it can be thought/mind related (pretend/imaginative play cooking, shopping, travelling to outer space), it can involve toys (teddy, blocks, lego) or even just involve words (singing, jokes, celebrity heads). Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist.

06.01.2022 The number one question we are asked as OTs is.... What exactly does an OT do? This is something that can confuse many because our role is so diverse and can range from sleep to social skills to motor skills and everything in between. The Oxley Early Intervention Therapists have put together an excellent brochure about providing good service. It includes this excellent page about what an OT does and to see an OT. Hope you find it helpful!... Rebecca Webster (OT).

06.01.2022 Some days it just feels good to squish your face into the hammock! Who else loves doing this?

03.01.2022 Meet Maginnis! Maginnis is the latest addition to our team at Kids Play Occupational Therapy. Having joined us back in May, right at the peak point of COVID-19, Maginnis comes with a wealth of knowledge and an exceptional ability to conduct Telehealth (and of course face to face) sessions with clients. Maginnis works Tuesday-Saturday at our Holland Park West clinic. We are so excited to be able to have her join our team and support the Kids Play OT kids and families.

03.01.2022 The bush fires across Australia have been devastating. Kids Play OT have been trying to work out what we can do to help. Some of our amazing therapists are volunteering their time to offer OT services to children affected by the fires and we have decided to donate to the RSPCA, Salvation Army, the NSW wildlife information, rescue and education service and the NSW rural fire fighting service. Hoping that it helps those animals and people in need. Our well wishes to all our families, friends and NDIS partners affected by fires or that have family affected.

17.12.2021 Happy OT week to all the OTs, clients, and thier families! Here are two beautiful artworks by Kids Play OT clients. One picture is of a child climbing high on the hammock while his OT cheers him on, and the other is a child engaging in obstacle courses to work on her motor skills! In OT we love challenging our clients while having fun. Obstacle courses and equipment like the hammock help our little ones work on motor skills, persistence, creativity, planning and organisatio...n, and much much more. After all, the best therapy is when we forget we're even doing therapy. Thanks for the amazing artworks Daniel and Leah!

28.11.2021 It’s OT week, so we’re sharing our profession through the art of our clients. Image one depicts child and OT (wearing a face mask) playing a two player, competitive game called mancala. By 9 year old client. Image two depicts a client’s favourite game, bedbugs. Art by 7 year old client. Why do we play games in OT? Games allow for motivating and structured ways to practice social skills, turn taking, emotional regulation, winning and losing, attention, fine motor skills and much more. Basically, games are a fun and exciting way to learn!

11.11.2021 It’s OT week! And what better way to share what we do than the art of kids themselves. Image depicting child and OT on laptops for Telehealth, camels in the desert on their own laptops, love hearts, and the word ‘hug’. Art by 5 year old client, Mount Isa. Telehealth allows us to connect with kids all across Australia, bringing OT to areas with limited access to services.

What's going on here? - Attention - Following directions - Fine motor strength... - Pincer grasp - Bimanual coordination - Visual perception - Turn taking - Communication - Lots of fun! This little guy worked for 30 minutes to make this mask, and took 9 attempts to do so. Such amazing perseverance!
