18.01.2022 Sensory preferences & family life. The beach is an intense sensory experience - salty air, crashing waves, gritty sand and wild winds. As a sensory seeker I love everything about it! Being near the ocean I feel invigorated and refreshed. ... However sometimes the little people in our lives don't feel the same way. Something you love can overwhelm, upset or disorientate them. And in these moments, as much as you want to sweep them up and immerse them in the experience, because you love it so much, and if they tried it, surely they would too. The most respectful thing we can do is empathize and validate their experience. And if you're at the beach, let them stand on the steps and take in the view in their own way, in their own time. #ot #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapy #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #paediatricot #sensory #sensoryplay #otforlife #family #respectfulparenting #sensoryavoider

11.01.2022 Summer holidays and the opportune time to practice what you preach. Staying present and regulated as a parent through the ups and downs of holidaying with toddlers!

02.01.2022 Self-help skills; Cutlery! This week we've jumped into telehealth. One of the things that I love about telehealth is the opportunity to see the home environment, and get a snapshot into family life, systems and routines. We've been focusing on building independence in feeding with cutlery skills. And as you can see here, not all cutlery sets were created equal. For little hands it helps to have appropriately sized utensils (blue set), and for older kids a handle with somethin...g to hold onto (blue set). When learning a new skill it helps if we're feeling regulated (and not hungry). Playdough and playtime is the perfect time to explore cutlery. We've been making and slicing up lots of playdough sausages and cannoli!
