25.01.2022 So we had all these little #colestreehousebooks that were a little advanced for my 3 year old but were too cute to not use in our play. So, we created our very own #littleminilibrary our #coleslittletreehouselibrary. We used Muslin cotton draw string bags as our library bags, I downloaded, printed and laminated free library cards off #pinterest and created and laminated book cards to sign books in and out using our sticker reel. My little one extended the play by introducing... the little basket under the library shelf as the basket for returned books. I have never been a more excited and proud #therapymom . This has been our best yet #covid_19 #stage4lockdown entertainment that has created hours of fun and great opportunities for learning and development like reciprocal and creative play, idea formations, following a sequence and fine motor skills like pincer grasp using stickers on our book cards and opening and closing our library bag pulling the draw string with two hands for biannual hand use. 24.01.2022 With our main focus on play as the strongest contributor to our little ones development and growth, I am always looking for ways to extend and build on ideas, imaginations, themes and interests! RECOMMENDATION: Follow your child’s interest as they will always feel the pull for an #invitationtoplay. Use this as a guide for your themes and ways to play to foster engagement and development. Incorporate it into your activity set ups, offered toys, conversation, a...nd outings! Thereafter, find ways to extend on the theme into other avenues of interest and fun! We are currently super into the song 5 little ducks atm! So I have set up a beautiful #playtray which always sits on the top of the shelf and gets changed over with the current interest. Whilst singing our 5 little ducks song, we play out the actions using our little wooden ducks from the #opshop and our open ended wooden toys such as our #grimmsrainbow used as our bridge. The main attraction of this #playsetup is our @sarahssilks from @oskarswoodenark This seascape #playsilk is definitely amongst our top favorite item at the moment and adds the most magnificent #sensory and #visual element to our play scene! Our outing included a visit to the park pond full of ducks where we could connect our learning and experiences with real life and play. I always believe that this truly helps to develop understanding and transference of skills across all areas and to other aspects in life! I made green playdough to match our interest and current learning- CHILD-LED, EXTENDED LEARNING WITH COLOUR With full supervision; we rolled some balls and stuck of our #1 favorite craft item, googly eyes on or dough to make a frog- FINE MOTOR and COPYING We added some peppermint loose tea and essential oil- SENSORY SMELLS WITH ALERTING FEELS She brought me the green fairy so we decided to add some green glitter because the fairy had bough us some special fairy dust as a surprise- VISUAL SENSORY FUN WITH A SIDE OF CREATIVE IMAGINATION AND EXTENDED PLAY Then I walked away for a few minutes to check our dinner and this is what I came back to! Simply grab a basket, a bottle, a cardboard box or a bucket and head outside and see what interesting things you may find. Or perhaps you’ll set an intention to discover something more about something specific like insects or flowers or trees...... We often go for an evening walk after dinner to unwind and digest and last’s night’s #nature adventure bought us these wonderful #naturetreasures that we added to our #naturetable at home. We thanked the tree for allowing us to pick its flowers and learn from them, we acknowledge the life of the two bees we found and how lucky we were to come across them to extend our knowledge, and lastly we were grateful for the birds that left behind these two feathers for us to explore. 16.01.2022 So with a new interest and understanding in feelings, independence and responsibility we have now started to shift our focus on nurturing and building these skills for life! When parents come to me with their academic worries, I often say let’s take a step back and first look at the social and emotional side of things. Having strong and well-developed social emotional skills is so important to lay the foundation to tackle and manage academic work. Like be...ing able to self-regulate, manage anger and frustration, have resilience, build a self-image and confidence, build strategies to cope with the pressure and responsibility of learning and identify the need to ask for help... A really simple, quick and easy way to foster these skills is gardening! I know right, so simple! This Mamma is is most definitely not ready for a pet and most definitely does not have the greenest of fingers however, we found a fabulous easy option!! #microgreens #growingtray I’ve attached a second photo to see how we did it! I love how excited my little one gets to check on her seeds’ growth and water them a little more in the hopes tomorrow they will be bigger . So every household is of course different, which we love to embrace and accept, but in household we’re not apposed to plastic if it’s something that is of learning value or in...terest, but we rather gravitate towards wooden. Grapat Ostheimer @ @grimmstory From around the time when my daughter was still a newborn, I came across the natural play world, idea of toy rotation and wooden toy family and I was in and haven’t looked back! It aligned with everything I wanted for my daughter and more and could see the endless reels of learning opportunities ahead as an occupational therapist! I loved how these two worlds of mine came together so easily and so clearly! The first time I gave my daughter her first wooden Grimm's Spiel und Holz Design set I couldn’t believe that she was engaged in independent play for 30minutes! Yup, that long! That’s an extremely long time for an 11month old! My mom brain was going pfft of course .. but the therapist brain in me was like no, must be a once off! With time as we continued to engage in this open ended and child-led, natural play, using abstract and open ended toys, I couldn’t believe the developmental leaps my daughter was taking and how all this play was so invaluable in helping to lay the foundations for her future learning! And this is were our new vision for our clinic and therapy practice emerged! What a treasure for our loose parts collection. On my maternity leave I came across the wonderful world of natural and loose parts play and I haven’t looked back! As a parent and occupational therapist it has been absolutely incredible to watch how my little ones development has unfolded using this Incredible form of play! It has given thinking outside the box, problem solving and creativity a whole new meaning and perspective for me! The promotion of language, communication, social skills like engagement, reciprocal conversation, turn taking, sharing and waiting, as well as role identification, role play and building on play scenes and schemas is immeasurable! Did you also know that PLAY indirectly lends to opportunities for Aca...demic Learning like maths through counting money at the market, handwriting when taking someone’s order at the restaurant, letter and word identification and matching/scanning when finding the item you need on your shopping list and on the shelf, sequencing like when making a cup of tea and life skills like laundry and dressing skills, through dressing your @minilanddollsaus baby. One of the things that contributes so much to our beloved play are our natural and handmade resources like our favourite doll clothes! 11.01.2022 Oh hello healthy happy dinner Yup healthy and fun! #Sugarfree, #dairyfree #wholemeal #mugmuffincake with blueberries sprinkled inside accompanied by two dollops of almond yoghurt eyes with some very blackberrylicious pupils in tow! It took all of 5minutes that’s it! Over the past few weeks with the crazy amount of public holidays we’ve had and the school break having just passed, I spent a lot of time mulling over in my head how many parents have this insatiable need to... control the what and how kids eat! For a second I started to think am I a little too lenient and relaxed . Now hold your horses I’m not saying go give some ice-cream and chocolate sauce for breakfast tomorrow but what I’m saying is let’s stimulate some positive food for thought: is the control and moderation of the amount, types of food, sugar intake and mess made, helping or hindering? 10.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon as I was scrolling through my #instagram feed I came across this wonderful and inspiring activity by @playlearningandyou. I found Mel’s page through our November Bubs group on #facebook and I love so much of what she shares. This activity particularly drew me in! Books are a forever favourite and constant in our #home, since we‘ve been very little. I am a big advocate for #books supporting so many areas around #development. Last night we read about #anim...als and this afternoon we chose a new spot to #read together; outside on our little #wooden bench. We’ve only crossed off two boxes and we have already shared beautiful #bonding moments, benefits of role reversal in my little one reading to me, creativity and imagination by making up unique stories from the pictures, ideas of #play and opportunities for transference and extension of learning (we read about the moon and then looked for it and stars with our binoculars). 08.01.2022 The best way to help our children learn about #social and emotional skills is by allowing ourselves to open up and feel. Normalising feelings by allowing yourself to feel and express these feelings around your child, is the best way to role model and #teach them. I often will say things to my 3 year old like; I’m so sorry mommy is a little frustrated today, that’s where all the arrrggg, whyyyy and gooooo’s are coming from these are mommy’s feelings today but the cuddle you g...ave me made me feel so much better. We are all #human and will find ourselves at a point where we may reach anger or extreme frustration, sadness or fatigue and that’s OK! We have our own limits and a lot of the time we juggle so much that we don’t often honor and acknowledge what we feel or need before we hit that final point. When you make yourself vulnerable emotionally, what you are doing is owning your own feelings, removing the guilt from the child for possibly doing something wrong, releasing the need to please, and allowing your child to know that it’s ok to feel. You’ve let them know that emotions are welcome and accepted, that they will be supported and loved through them I hear you, I’m here with you, it is so frustrating, I understand... and most importantly allow them to feel #safe with comfort and familiarity in a very uncomfortable, overwhelming experience. 06.01.2022 We are at the age now where we just want to help with everything and I love and embrace nothing more than to involve her in it all but at times it can be super challenging! You gotta hold, show, hold, oh your turn, hold and properly position to view from a safe distance whilst stirring, mixing and oh pick up again to put some in ... You know #momkitchenlife I didn’t want to miss out on these great opportunities for life skills and de...velopment and at the same time wanted to make chores at home more time efficient! So.... SOLUTION Today our magnificent #learningtower from @littlebiglearning arrived! I was so impressed with the beautiful finish and quality of this piece I have to say! From a safety perspective my little one was super supported with me by her side to oversee but still allow her enough independence to learn, experience and grow! The chalkboard is perfect to keep her busy when I need to quickly whip up or clean something. Lastly, the size is brilliant! It’s small, compact and fits snug out the way but not too small that she doesn’t have enough room to work! Thank you @littlebiglearning you have made this #occupationaltherapymom very happy!! 06.01.2022 Did you know that just likes adults need work in life, kids need play! Kids learn almost everything through play! Playing is the key most essential way to foster and nurture your child’s development! I lose track of the endless hours of play we have in our household and we often find ourselves caught up in the crazy fun we are having! There are just so many possibilities to build play into your everyday!! We’ve just set up our pretend play kitchen in our real kitchen to help ...connect real life into imagination... this is my favourite thing to do! It’s never too early to start playing! Yes they may not understand the full use of an item and yes maybe they can’t pretend to eat or drink but they could learn to open and close, pull up to stand, take in and out or put on or take off, all important life skills no? Children can then learn to build upon and extend this learning as they get bigger and progress with each life stage! So this is our set up for our play tomorrow! Every day I try to set up a new or extended play activity or two! However with this one I’m not too sure if this is more for me or my daughter Anyway... 05.01.2022 Ummm... Wooden Toys are for all of us right!!! The beauty of open-ended wooden toys! Imagination, creativity, thinking, play, story telling and dreaming with a secret side of calming... All of these important experiences and skills for life! You’re never to young to start and you’re never too old to stop! @grimmswoodentoys and @ostheimerwoodentoys are a toy staple in our home! ... I’m not sure who had more fun today I think I may have spent 45ish minutes photographing all the animals on a road trip But I also loved watching my daughter as she explored the ways to create and play! My little lady insisted firmly on these magnificent Waldorf @lyra_feelcreative pencils, one of my favourite types of pencils with their triangular pencil body and indented dotted grooves to support functional pencil grasp and finger placement. 03.01.2022 *Follow along for some holiday fun* Weekly holiday activities that are not only fun but help with learning and skills at the same time. ACTIVITY 1: Wrapping Paper- fine motor, grasping, visual skills, finger isolation, prewriting patterns, social skills like tune taking and conversation.... It was so simple we used a big piece of butchers paper, a glue stick to make pattens, glitter sprinkled in a pile with a brush over to the glue to reveal our patterned surprise. So this week our theme was yellow and because we are bee obsessed in this house we naturally went bee themed everything RECOMMENDATIONS:... - Using a dinner tray with legs is a great way to raise the surface for the little ones to reach, grab, stabilize their body and access all resources without hassle - Playdough is firm OT favourite used for hand skill development like strength, grasping, reaching and crossing the midline... - Using a rolling pin is a great way to develop skills like using two hands at the same time and strength - You can Incorporate so many extensions like counting: we used our bees and popsicle sticks (at this age, my LO is a too little to independently count but modeling and coactive counting is a great way to begin drawing awareness to this skill set) - Google eyes and pipe cleaner feelers were great ways to work on pincer grasp and parts of a bee (full supervision with kids younger than 4years or with limited understanding of mouthing small items is required due to the risk of choking!)
