25.01.2022 Removing Ticks! Smother the tick with meths and allow 10 minutes for it to die. Check it’s dead by poking it to see if it’s legs wiggle. Then grasp it ON the he...ad with secure forceps to ensure you remove the mouthparts. Grasp firmly and pull the whole tick out. Wash the meths off the skin. Sometimes you may still expect a small residual swelling in the area which should resolve in a few days. Ticks like to head for the soft genital areas so check these areas frequently. See more

20.01.2022 WARM JUMPERS SAVING LIVES As temperatures plummet, farmers and their flocks are feeling the cold and none more so than tiny lambs left orphaned due to t...he effects of drought. But a colourful initiative to keep lambs warm with jumpers this winter has gained worldwide traction and has been saving lives as well as bringing joy to farmers. Perth resident Trish Lambkin has dedicated hours to knitting hundreds of life-saving jumpers orphaned by drought and circumstance. A big shout out to Trish for such a wonderful effort! 18.01.2022 WHO ARE PATHOLOGISTS & WHAT DO THEY DO? Veterinary pathologists are specialist veterinarians who work in the field of pathology. Pathologists carry out examinat...ions on various specimens including blood, body fluids and tissue samples in order to help diagnose and monitor disease. They work in a variety of fields including animal disease surveillance, disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, research and test development. In addition to a veterinary degree, veterinary pathologists complete specialised training and board certification to become registered specialists in pathology. Whilst pathologists do not communicate directly with pet owners, they provide knowledge, diagnostic skill and advice to veterinarians about their cases. #vetpath #pathology

17.01.2022 Have you ever seen a horse drink water...from the bucket's point of view? :) Water is the most vital nutrient for a horse. A horse’s daily water requirements ar...e influenced by age; body condition; the amount, type and quality of feed consumed; fitness level; and activity level. Other factors influencing a horse's water consumption include the temperature, as well as the freshness, purity and palatability of the available water. An idle, 1,100-pound horse in a cool environment will drink 6 to 10 gallons of water per day. But depending on the temperature and on the conditions in which the horse is exercised, the total water intake can increase up to 30 gallons per day. The take-home message: all horses need clean, good-quality water at all times. Outdoor water troughs should be cleaned at least every couple of week to remove debris and algae; stall water buckets should be emptied and rinsed daily. If you have an automatic water system, be sure to check it daily as there could be a malfunction that would result in your horses not getting adequate amounts of water. 12.01.2022 Parts of a vets job may be to deal with animals that have not been treated well by humans. Vet work is not all about fluffy kittens and patting puppies. There is a real world out there - the earlier kids realize this the better.

09.01.2022 Bearded dragon venipuncture in sternal recumbency. I’m normally used to collecting blood with dragons positioned almost vertically, but in this girl we were try...ing to avoid any form of restraint which might put pressure on her ovaries. The last thing we want is to cause any more to rupture before she goes into surgery! Coming into summer, we’ve seen an influx in female bearded dragons with follicular stasis - watch this space for more info about diagnosis and prevention

08.01.2022 There’s a lot more to vet work than meets the eye! Laboratory work plays a big part in the process of gathering information about animals, to help diagnose clinical illness.

06.01.2022 BRONCHOALVEOLAR LAVAGE- WHAT TO INCLUDE? Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) is a diagnostic method that provides important information about inflammatory, infectious ...or neoplastic processes taking place at the alveolar (lung) level. A bronchoscope is passed through the mouth or nose of the patient into an appropriate airway in the lungs, with a measured amount of sterile saline introduced and then suctioned back for examination. Please send your BAL specimen in a sterile pot (urine pot is sufficient) , including an aliquot (portion) in an EDTA tube to help with cell preservation. Wherever possible, please also submit 2 smears made from the freshly collected fluid. This helps minimise changes which occur with storage (e.g. bacterial overgrowth and cell lysis) which can impact cytological results. #vetpath #pathology See more
