Year 6 students are particularly susceptible as the excitement of a school year ending is overshadowed by anxiety and a fear of navigating the unfamiliar territory of high school - in addition to the stress of higher academic expectations. So every day this week, we'll be sharing resources that will help you to help your students (or children, in the case of parents) make a smooth transition to this next phase of their life.

These are valid concerns but they have led to a situation where we now try to remove failure and conflict from our children’s lives.... We try to engineer friendships for our kids and sort out their conflicts for them. Perhaps we recall our own emotional dysregulation and we think we can save our children from those feelings. On the flip side, some parents believe in ‘tough love’. The ‘harden up princess’, ‘You’re okay’ approach. The problem with that is emotional regulation relies on a connection with parents."

Diagnosed with autism at age 3, a medical specialist told his mother Judy that she should put him away in an institution and forget she ever had him. One year later, and after being threatened with murder by her husband, Judy left the abusive marriage to save herself and her two sons. Judy introduced Tim to drawing as a means of communicating with him. After 12 months of watching her draw stick figures to expla...in a situation, Tim picked up a pencil at began drawing. He has since gone on to set records with his exceptional talent, and in particular his superhero creation, Laser Beak Man, which was turned into an eight episode animated television series screening in Australia before being sold to Cartoon Network Australia, New Zealand and Asia a world first for a young man with autism to achieve. Today, Tims art is in demand from collectors from around the world while his 2014 TEDx Sydney talk received a standing ovation. Through both his work and personal experiences, Shane has a dee...p understanding of the traumatic impact a natural disaster can have on a child's emotional well-being. As our patron, Shane will support KidsXpress on our mission to improve the lives of children impacted by trauma, adversity and mental ill-health, a goal that is particularly pertinent after a year of unprecedented change and unrest. With only 20-30% of children who experience mental ill-health accessing support services, we need to be making greater efforts to reach more children and their caregivers. With Shanes role as Resilience NSW Commissioner at the new State agency responsible for building community resilience following a disaster or other traumatic event, Shane is the perfect patron for KidsXpress and were truly honoured to have him join our village.
16.01.2022 In his poem, "Cause I Ain't Got a Pencil," Joshua T. Dickerson describes some of the daily challenges children face through no fault of their own. The poet said his inspiration for the poem came after watching a heartbreaking incident at an Atlanta school, where a child asked his teacher for a pencil. The teacher said the student could borrow the pencil only if he removed his shoe and left it as collateral.... The child took off the shoe and he had a dirty sock on and it caused the other students in the class to laugh at him, Dickerson shared. I wrote a story about what I imagined happened prior to that moment. Dickerson says that the message he was hoping to make is that we adults should remember to think twice and offer help rather than even more hardship.

This place where they could go to sing and dance and throw paint, which was really colourful and vibrant ... but most importantly, they would talk about this place as being outside of the school, the hospital and even their family. Others may have come from a background where the concept of love has been used inappropriately and leaves them feeling vulnerable. 01.01.2022 Suicide Trigger Warning A graphic video of a man dying by suicide is being shared across social media platforms with Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter racing to have the content removed. Alarmingly, internet trolls are tricking social media users into watching the video by inserting the clip into seemingly harmless content.... The general advice from child welfare professionals is to ask your children to stay off all social media for a 24 hour period until they have been able to take this video out of the algorithm. Please exercise discretion in any discussion about the video with your children, so as not to draw additional attention to it. They may not have heard of or been exposed to it and drawing undue attention may cause unnecessary worry and increase exposure. If however you suspect your child may have already viewed the video (which has been circulating since last Sunday) they are likely to be very distressed and will need your support.
