23.01.2022 The Kihara Landscapes team would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. 2020 certainly has had it's challenges. Despite Melbourne's lockdown and many endless weeks of being unable to conduct face to face site consultations we have come out of lockdown stronger than ever. This year saw the successful launch of our rebrand and new website - if you haven't had a chance to visit our new website please follow the links below. We continue to honour and r...epresent Japanese heritage and culture here in Australia by designing and constructing Melbourne's best Japanese gardens. We have been privileged to work with some of Melbourne's most esteemed architects and are delighted that our clients will be enjoying their beautiful Japanese gardens this season. Keep an eye on your newsfeed early in the New Year as we are looking forward to sharing those projects with you in more detail. Our office will be closed for a much deserved break from 23rd December to 11th January. Thank you again for all your support this year. As Australia's borders remain closed never has it been so apt to "holiday at home". Travel to Japan is still some time off however we look forward to bringing Japan to your homes in 2021. 10.01.2022 The spider lily (Lycoris radiata) is called higanbana , the Higan flower, in Japan. Higan or O-Higan is a Buddhist holiday unique to Japan that occurs around... the Autumn Equinox (Shbun, ). Another name for the plant is manjushage , which comes from a Sanskrit word, manjusaka. It is considered to be the quintessential flower of early fall. The higanbana is a perennial in the amaryllis family, which means that it sends out a flower shoot first, and the leaves come later. It is thought to have come over from mainland Asia around the same time that rice was introduced, in prehistoric times. It grows prolifically around now all over Japan, along roadsides and train tracks, near graveyards and temples, and most of all on the edges of rice fields. It is planted as a deterrent against moles and mice, since the plant is poisonous, but the stems were also treated to remove the poison and eaten in the past. Because of its blood red color and its poisonous nature, as well as the fact that it blooms during Higan, which is believed to be the easiest time of the year to communicate with the dead (as opposed to Bon, when the dead actually visit you), the plant has other names like Flower of the Dead, Ghost Flower, and so on. (There are other colors too, like white and yellow.) The flower appears in a lot of ghost and horror stories. Here are just a few higanbana photos from this week. If you're on Twitter, please take the time to "like" them there.
