14.01.2022 As many will have seen, a stretch of roadside vegetation on South Coast Rd was pushed over as part of the fire response earlier this year. The ten kilometres of unburnt vegetation between Seal Bay and Crabbs Rd is a significant scar on the landscape and work has been undertaken to manage the debris in the best way possible. As a result of this work, the CFS, with agreement and support from Council, adjoining landholders, the Landscapes Board and the NPWS, is planning to coo...rdinate a burn of the fallen trees in Spring to remove the fuel hazard aspect. This timing is important for various reasons, such as allowing seed germination for self-revegetation and ensuring proper Phytophthora controls are in place to minimise risks to surrounding crops. Everyone is reminded to leave this patch of vegetation alone. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the KI Landscapes Board on 8553 4444.

14.01.2022 Through the Resilient Agriculture Project, the KI Landscape Board is helping local farmers learn more about soil health and pasture management for improved long term production outcomes. Last week on a farm visit in MacGillivray, Dick Richardson got into the details on feed assessment, advanced grazing planning on the MAIA grazing management platform, supplementation, and soil and plant health. During the paddock walk it was a welcome surprise to find native dung beetles in action on the sheep dung, and to see the clay piles that had been brought up from depth. Anyone interested in finding out more about soil health and pasture management opportunities should contact the KI Regional Agriculture Landcare Facilitator. 13.01.2022 When reviewing the camera traps out across the Dudley Peninsula last week the KI Landscape Board's feral cat eradication team got a welcome reminder of why we are undertaking the eradication work. Several endangered Southern Brown Bandicoots have been spotted on the southern part of the peninsula reinforcing the need to get rid of feral cats - their main predator. Our next goal is to create a safe haven over the Dudley for all the threatened species found there and reduce the... risk to our livestock industry from cat-borne diseases. 13.01.2022 Following successful trials in Simpson Conservation Park and Black Point on the Dudley Peninsula, the KI Landscape Board’s Feral Cat Eradication Program team will be deploying Curiosity ‘PAPP’- based feral cat baits in Lesueur Conservation Park and adjacent private woodland. Baiting is one of several tools being deployed as part of a systemic plan to eradicate feral cats on Kangaroo Island by 2023. Trapping and hunting is not a viable cat control option in heavily wooded ar...eas so baiting provides a valuable alternative. These Curiosity baits have the toxin contained within capsules, are more specific to carnivores and more humane than 1080. The team is being careful to employ baits in winter months when goannas are not active. Warning signs will be in place around properties within the area where the baits will be deployed. The community is reminded that this bait is very toxic to dogs so they should be kept away from the area. Baiting is set to take place from Tuesday 28 July 2020. 06.01.2022 Today is Plover Appreciation Day! Much like the magpie, some plovers will be swooping to protect their young at this time of year. This Aussie battler has it rough during the mating season... have a look at the video below to get a better idea about why plovers need to be so protective when people are around. ... The video shows a hooded plover and its nest - the hoodie doesn't swoop like the the spur-winged plover but is no less concerned with protecting its young. The best thing you can do for our winged friends is to keep a wide berth and make sure your dog is on a leash around their nesting areas. #PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover

04.01.2022 Exciting news a minimum of 454 glossies were counted in our 2020 population census. The eastern flock at American River and Dudley Peninsula has continued to increase and expand since 2016 and, thankfully, there did not appear to be significant mortality in north coast flocks as a direct result of the 2019-20 bushfires. Sadly, our southern flock did appear to lose birds during the bushfires. The work for our Recovery Program staff now continues to protect and restore glos...sy habitat post-fire to ensure this population has the best chance of long-term survival. Thank you to WWF-Australia for supporting this census.
