25.01.2022 2020 has been a year like no other. The challenges are real and they seem never-ending. All of us have faced lengthy restrictions and disappointments. We know that many in our College community may need extra support during this time. Today we recognise R U OK Day? a day about checking in and having a conversation that could change a life! Our Student Leadership Teams have planned many initiatives including our Community Action Group who have prepared this brilliant video. You can find out more at https://www.kilbreda.vic.edu.au/CollegeNewsDetails.aspx R U OK?

24.01.2022 Vale Maggie Fitzgibbon Margaret Maggie Fitzgibbon OAM passed peacefully on 8 June, aged 91. Maggie left the College in 1943 and in 2019 was inducted into our Past Pupils of Distinction. Maggie enjoyed a tremendous career as a singer and performer where she worked with stars including Noel Coward, Danny La Rue, Benny Hill, Morecombe and Wise, Ronnie Corbett, Tony Hancock, Max Bygraves, Jule Styne, Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim. After finding fame in ‘Kiss Me Kate’ she... headed for London and became a regular in pantomimes, performed in cabaret, played the female lead in a TV series and appeared in Bruce Beresford’s, ‘Sunstruck’. She also hosted her own show, ‘Maggie's Place’. Upon returning to Australia in 1978, Maggie became heavily involved in her local community. She found the plight of homeless and jobless young people a particular challenge that she wanted to solve, so she provided a cottage on her property for them to undergo rehabilitation. In 2002, she was awarded an OAM for services to the community. In January, in a conversation with College Archivist, Damian Smith, Maggie expressed I have such wonderful memories of my time at Kilbreda. Such strong women. May she have everlasting joy! 23.01.2022 Recently at our first Remote Whole School Assembly, members of our Senior Choir performed their first virtual piece, the 'Hymn to St Brigid’. Originally, the hymn had a distinctly Irish feel, however has been adapted over the years into the version we know now. Alterations, made to modernise the hymn, were removing archaisms such as ‘thee’ and ‘thy’ and replacing them with ‘you’ and ‘your’. Another change saw the Latin, ‘Sancta Mater’ replaced with the English, ‘Sainted Mother’, which is more relevant now with the modern Church. We know our ‘school song’ will bring back many memories for all past pupils and once you hear it, you cannot help but sing along. May we continue to ask St Brigid to send us hope along with faith and love, particularly throughout this year.

22.01.2022 This year Aladdin Jr was going to be our amazing Junior College production. Due to the restrictions around COVID-19, unfortunately we had to cancel the live performances and the cast and crew were understandably disappointed. However, recently, our students have found a creative and innovative way to keep the production alive! It’s amazing what can be achieved through technology and the raw talent of our wonderful students. We are very proud to introduce our first virtual performance, ‘Palace Walls’, performed by Sienna K (Jasmine), Olivia D (Isir), Rachel J (Rajah) and Maya C (Manal). Enjoy!

19.01.2022 Flashback Friday! This week it has been wonderful to welcome all of our students back into our beautiful buildings at the College. The noise and laughter has certainly been missed and it is nice to see and feel the movement of students travelling down the hallways as they have done for 116 years! Today our College is a unique mix of historic buildings and modern facilities with beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces.

15.01.2022 Amongst the hardships that have occurred with our current situation, incredible stories of compassion, strength and positivity are also emerging. One such story celebrates a student who is living the values of our College and spreading kindliness to all. Year 7 student, Evie H on her own devised a beautiful plan to display positivity posters around her suburb. Her eye-catching posters, encouraged members of her community to remove one of Evie’s positive messages and take it home with them. Within a few days, Evie returned to where she had left her posters and all the messages had been taken. Outstanding Evie!

15.01.2022 Recently, we were delighted to learn that Catherine Green, daughter and niece of our 1965 College Co-Captains, Rita and Claire Sierakowski, is producing a Podcast series ‘William & Lonsdale - Lives in the Law’. This podcast ‘focuses on the legal ecosystem in Victoria and the fascinating people who make it tick.’ Episode 1 features an interview with 2017 Past Pupil of Distinction, The Honourable Marilyn Warren AC, Former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Her wisdom and determination make her a wonderful role model for all Kilbreda girls. In the podcast, Marilyn states If you have a dream then keep living the dream, keep pursuing it, because one way or another you will get there. You will achieve it. 14.01.2022 This timely article, after the recognition of Refugee Week last week, has been written by 2019 Past Pupil of Distinction, Laura John - Solicitor at Refugee Legal and David Manne - Executive Director and Principal Solicitor of Refugee Legal. 'Many asylum seekers and refugees are struggling to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. Some are trapped in immigration detention centres across the country in cramped and overcrowded conditions that make physical distancing impossible. Others are living in our community on temporary visas or no visas at all, struggling to make ends meet. Despite what we’re told, we’re not all in this together’. 11.01.2022 Due to the current restrictions, Catholic Education Melbourne’s ‘Creative Arts Exhibition’ is being shown online. 09.01.2022 A group of Year 11 VCE Literature students are compiling an anthology of stories, poems, photos, songs, art and essays based on everyone’s experiences during 2020. This anthology will feature both student and staff pieces and the girls would like to extend the invite out to past pupils to also contribute to this community project. The anthology will be designed and printed before the end of the year, with the intention to sell the published piece and donate a percentage to a chosen charity. 06.01.2022 As promised, today we highlight another incredible performance from our remote Junior College production, Aladdin Jr. This impressive musical number ‘Friend like Me’, occurs after Aladdin has released Genie from his lamp and Genie begins to boast about all of the fabulous things he can do for Aladdin. ‘Friend Like Me’ is performed by Andeana C (Genie), Ava B (Babkak) and Mia W (Kassim) and features Caitlin G and Loghan C (Dancers).

05.01.2022 The first week of ‘Kilbreda Connect’, our Remote Learning Model, has been very positively received by both students and parents and it is wonderful to see so many of our students engaging in remote learning with our teachers who care about their wellbeing and academic progress. We are incredibly grateful for the feedback including: Just a short note to thank and commend you on the remote learning offer Kilbreda has put together during the past few weeks - it is amazing and w...e are extremely grateful. Your off-site Teaching & Learning plan and the handbook explaining it are enormously reassuring. And the well-being Wednesdays are genius! Learning new technology and a new way of teaching is not easy and to do this in these unprecedented times is even more admirable. Congratulations to our staff and students who have enthusiastically supported this adventure and embraced a new way of learning. 03.01.2022 While much has been said of this challenging situation in which we find ourselves and our College community, this is not the first time life at Kilbreda has been disrupted due to an epidemic. Following World War 1, in 1919, the Spanish Flu was brought to our shores by returning soldiers. That year, our College opened for classes a month later than usual in an attempt to control its spread, much like our current state of affairs. In 1937, we went through the Poliomyelitis Epid...emic which saw schools close for six weeks and sent our boarders home. In 1942, our boarding school felt the effects of a Mumps Epidemic and in 1943, the Typhoid Fever outbreak hit and lasted most of that year. Through this outbreak, our beautiful suburb, Mentone, saw hundreds of local residents infected. Like the challenging times and hardships we have endured in the past, we know that as a community, when we stand together we are stronger! Look after yourselves and those around you. 01.01.2022 It is with a heavy heart that the Past Pupils’ Network Committee has made the decision to cancel all class reunions for the remainder of 2020. During the current climate the safety of our College community is incredibly important and we find ourselves social distancing and bound by the limited numbers permitted at gatherings that are likely to be restricted for quite some time. Therefore, the Class of 2000 (20 Year Reunion) - 10 October, the Class of 1970 (50 Year Reunion) - 24 October, the Class of 1962 - 14 November and the Class of 1980 (40 Year Reunion) - 21 November will not go ahead. At this stage these reunions may move to 2021, however we will need to monitor the situation. We pray that you are all coping with this ever-changing landscape and are remaining safe and well.

01.01.2022 In continuing to take an innovative approach to ensure our College community remain connected, today we gathered online for our first Remote Whole School Assembly. Like all of our Assemblies, this one required many hours of work behind the scenes by various staff members and students. However, the extra time and effort was well worth it as we could all finally celebrate together, recognise how blessed we are and share some of the positive stories that have emerged during this time. Please enjoy one of our musical performances from the assembly, ‘Rainbow’, performed by members of our VCE Music Class: Emily, Juliette, Ellie, Michaela and Charlotte.

01.01.2022 On this day, 8 August 1904, Vera Ryan, Marion Nunan and Eileen Dempsey (pictured in the group photo from 1907) commenced their education at the newly opened Brigidine Convent School in Mentone under the leadership of Mother Margaret Mary Murphy. Happy 116th Birthday Kilbreda!
