22.01.2022 What snacks are you feeding your pets? Here are some examples of what some snacks can convert to for your pet.

21.01.2022 Foods that can make your pet sick: There are a number of common foods can make your pet sick. Some of the common ones include:... Chocolate and Caffeine -The amount and type of chocolate/caffeine your dog consumes will determine the toxicity level. Symptoms of toxicity can include vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst, abdominal discomfort, lethargy, muscle tremors, high body temperature, seizures, and possible death. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is. Grapes and Raisins - While grapes and raisins are not harmful to some dogs, they have been associated with kidney failure in others. Vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea can occur within 12 hours of ingestion. If the symptoms are not treated, they can lead to dehydration, decreased appetite and kidney problems. Alcohol -Small amounts of alcohol found in drinks, syrups and raw bread dough can be toxic to dogs. This is due to the ethanol in the products. Signs of intoxication include vomiting, disorientation, high body temperature, restlessness, excessive panting, muscle tremors and seizures Xylitol - is an artificial sweetener found in foods like sugarless gum, sugar-free candy and baked goods. It can also be found in toothpaste and mouthwash etc. Ingestion can cause a life-threatening drop in your dog’s blood sugar, as well as liver damage. Symptoms include vomiting, seizures and loss of coordination, which can occur anywhere from a few minutes to several hours after ingestion. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, a 5kg dog would only need to eat a single piece of sugar-free gum to reach a potentially toxic dose. Onions and Garlic - Anything in the onion familyfrom garlic to shallots and chives is toxic to dogs. They contain compounds that can cause gastroenteritis, anemia and damage to the red blood cells. Garlic is considered to be five times as potent as onions. Signs of poisoning often do not appear for several days after ingestion, but include lethargy, weakness and orange- to dark red-tinged urine. Macadamia Nuts - Ingestion of just a few macadamia nuts can cause weakness, paralysis and lack of coordination. If you are unsure if you can feed a food to your dog, always consult your veterinarian first. If you are worried your pet has eaten something that could be toxic contact Kilcoy Vet Practice on 5497 1511 at any time. To keep your dog out of harm’s way, it is best to stick to a diet of food specifically formulated to meet your dog’s nutritional needs. Download the First Aid for Pets App and find Kilcoy Vet Practice to register. You will get some great information here also

15.01.2022 August is DENTAL month - Healthy set, Happy pet August is Pet Dental Health Month and here at Kilcoy Vet Practice we are very excited to have the opportunity to talk all things oral health! The health of your pet’s teeth and gums is an important part of general husbandry to ensure your pets are healthy and comfortable. Dental disease can go undetected for long periods if not checked by a vet, and often your pet may be suffering without you realising. In fact, 80% of dogs and... 70% of cats over the age of 3 are suffering from some degree of dental disease. When undetected, small dental problems can progress to severe disease including gingivitis, bone loss, bleeding, and abscessation. As well as this, if severe dental disease is allowed to develop, harmful bacteria can enter the bloodstream which has dangerous effects on other organs in the body and your pet’s general health. The best way to ensure your pet’s dental health is taken care of is to have your pet checked by a vet. Any time your pet is here for their yearly check-up and vaccinations, a vet will check your pet’s teeth to ensure any dental problems are caught early, or to provide advice on how to continue your pet’s good oral health. During the month of August, we are offering FREE nurse dental checks, just give us a ring to make a booking. Our friendly and competent nursing staff can thoroughly check your pet’s teeth and gums and together with a vet, recommend a plan of action either for treating a problem or maintaining the good health of your pet’s mouth. Every dog and cat is different, and a dental health plan for one may not work for the other. Did you know that just like us, brushing your pet’s teeth daily is the best way to prevent dental disease? While some people are able to provide this for their pets, unfortunately, this can be a very difficult task and is often not an option for pets and owners. By taking advantage of our free nurse dental checks during the month of August, any maintenance or treatment your pet needs can be tailored to suit them and you for the best outcome for everyone. Please take advantage of this offer and call to make a booking today! Call Kilcoy Vet Practice on 5497 1511

12.01.2022 Cooler Weather and your Pet We have been experiencing cooler weather and your pet may be feeling the cold which you will notice them trembling and looking for warm spaces to stay warm. Dogs and cats will tend to curl up and avoid lying on the cold floor and look for warming areas to rest. As a general rule if you are feeling the cold then your pet will be cold also. Common problems with the cold weather include stiff and sore joints especially with older animals. As with... humans, the cold weather can make arthritis symptoms worse and a check-up may be needed. You may notice they are having difficulty in getting up after a sleep or moving slower. Dry skin can also be a problem for your pet. Decreased activity can impact your pets metabolism and adjusting the diet may be necessary to avoid weight gain. Some of the best ways to keep your pet comfortable in the cooler weather includes providing warm dry bedding, a elevated bed is great to keep them off the cool floor. Also a warm coat is great for pets that are older, small or have thin coats (currently Kilcoy Vet Practice is offering 20 percent discount on all coats) If you feel that your pet is struggling with the colder weather, be sure to visit Kilcoy Vet practice for advice and to discuss any concerns..
