05.01.2022 I have only just discovered that the SMH published a brief review of Kill the Major. I was very pleased with the concluding line, "One of those amazing stories that wars throw up." You can find the review at :https://www.smh.com.au//non-fiction-reviews-how-innovation By Steven Carroll July 24, 2020 10.59pm... Kill the Major Paul Malone For Pity Sake Publishing, $24.99 CREDIT: The eponymous major marked for killing was British officer Tom Harrisson, who led a small guerrilla force operating behind Japanese lines in Borneo during the last days of the Pacific war. They preceded the AIF invasion, lived in the jungle, enlisted the support of the native population and most days set off looking for trouble and nearly always found it. Remarkably, by war’s end they had killed more than 1000 Japanese, with no losses. It would seem to be an astonishing success story and Harrisson was eminently qualified for the operation, besides being a fearless, all-round adventurer he’d also led an ornithology expedition to Borneo in 1932. He was also a ruthless bully with a hot temper who expected total obedience to the extent that three men vowed to kill him. One of those amazing stories that wars throw up.

05.01.2022 It's worth remembering that the guerrilla war continued in Borneo well after the surrender on 15 August 1945.

03.01.2022 Sincere thanks to Tom Hayes, great nephew of Stroke Hayes, for taking the time to write this review of the book. For Pity Sake

02.01.2022 Military Operations Research Analyst, and Military Historian, Dr Andrew Ross (UNSW, ADFA) Has written a review of Kill the Major which has some worthwhile insights. It reads as follows: Despite its catchy and slightly misleading title, this is an important work on a long-ignored part of the Second World War in North Borneo. Major Tom Harrisson led a party of 42 soldiers sent to gather intelligence prior to the landings of Australian forces in Borneo in 1945. Little was know...Continue reading
