24.01.2022 Interesting (for a physio) the number of men who complain of back pain, especially whilst sitting at work or driving, who keep their wallets in their back pocket. Hint - take it out.

24.01.2022 Is sitting resting our back? Sadly no. Sitting causes pressure increases in the discs which lie between the vertebral bodies (bones). This can result in a restriction in nourishment to the disc leadng to long term degenerative changes - wear and tear - PAIN. We choose to sit because the muscles supporting are back become tired.... So what can you do if you are in a sedentary occupation? Change positions when you can, maybe get up every 20-30 mins. I also recommend sitting on an air cushion for periods throught the day, this encourages movement. Also standing, supporting your lower back and bending backwards is another stratergy

23.01.2022 Pillow talk Waking up with neck pain? It could be your pillow. A group of researchers studied pillows over a 10 week period. Volunteers had to sleep on their own pillow in weeks 1,3,5,7,9. In between weeks they tested five different pillows for seven consecutive nights. The pillows were regular foam and contoured foam, rubber, polyester and feather.... They found that rubber pillows alleviated pain more effectively than other pillows, especially for people who slept on their side.

22.01.2022 GENETICS AND BACK PAIN - YET ANOTHER THING TO BLAME ON OUR PARENTS Research has shown that the causes of back pain are many. But one of the strongest correlations with back pain is genetic. Studies have compared, the MR images of the lumbar spine of twins. Interestingly if one twin was sedentary (clerical) and the other physical (bricklayer) the rate of spinal degeneration is almost identical.

19.01.2022 Barefoot running - Friend or foe? The lecture I attended on Thursday night. Only a physio or anthropologist could get excited about that topic!... (I think) Liebermann (an anthropologist) believes that, as we have only become agriculturist over the past 10,000 yrs, are feet have not evolved to be shod (as before that we were chasing down game to eat). Modern running shoes have only been around for 40 yrs, and over the same 40 yrs the percentage of recreational/professional running injuries has not reduced! (I think) the general (physio) concensus is that it's our technique of running rather than shod v's unshod which determines (our) running injuries. The discussion at the lecture was extremely lively, and I wanted to get home, but no one pointed out that the average caveman died of old age about 30, so osteoarthritis and foot stress fractures weren't an issue!

15.01.2022 KNEE ARTHRITIS A recent study has shown that 65% of people with a BMI > 25 can alleviate their knee symptoms by losing 5% body weight.

09.01.2022 What makes a good runner? Well apart from who you chose as parents.... Stride length, good runners have a shorter stride length (higher cadence rate).... Forefoot strikers, heel striking is less efficient biomechanically. Upright posture, again more biomechanically efficient. Next time you watch an elite runner at a sporting event check out their technique!

04.01.2022 PHYSIOTHERAPY AND CANCER Physiotherapy in the field of oncology is expanding, In clinical practaice physiotherapists commonly assess people coping with the side effects of cancer and its treatment. Diagnostic and and treatment options for cancer are advancing due to new technology and drug therapies. In the 1920's, five year survival for those diagnosed with cancer was about 20 per cent. By 2003, this had improved to 62 per cent. For prostate and breast cancer, those diag...nosed and treated early, the five year survival is now more than 98%. Treatment often involves surgery requiring post-operative recovery support, rehabilitation and scar tissue management. For example the need for core stability after abdomional surgery and scarring management after mastectomy. Chemotherapy treatment can cause fatigue, nerve and or organ damage. Physiotherapy which helps to maintain activity levels, and exercise programs have been shown to decrease symptoms of the side effects of some chemotherapy drugs. Ongoing exercise will help muscle mass and bone density losses, another possible side effect of chemotherapy. Radiotherapy can cause fatigue and some tissue damage. This tissue damage can cause pain, tightness and dysfunction. Physiostherapy and exercise can help minimise these side effects. People surviving cancer expect a good quality of life. The aim of physiotherapy is to help with attaining this quality of life.

01.01.2022 HEADACHES I watched a webinar on headaches last night. Most people associate headaches with brain tumors and haemorrages. Certainly a rare but not to be overlooked cause of headache, but a common cause of headache is the neck.... Neck, or cervicogenic headaches, often start in the neck and radiate to the head, often as far as the forehead and eye. They are often one sided, and come on after periods of prolonged sitting (think computer use). Headaches more commonly affect females and can be worse when the female has her period, which often leads many women to dismiss the headache as purely hormonal. Yes the hormones have increased the impact of the headache, but it still has a cervical component which can be treated with physiotherapy and posture advice. Now for a prediction - I think teenage boys will be our next big group of headaches sufferers - think of the amount of time those boys spend on Playstation and X-Box!
