25.01.2022 Burning embers can travel kilometres ahead of a bush fire. An ‘ember attack’ is the main cause of house loss in bush fires as they can occur before, during and after the fire front passes. Cleaning gutters and patching holes or gaps in your roof is an effective way to protect your home from ember attack. Learn about the five simple steps to prepare your home for bush fire at myfireplan.com.au

25.01.2022 Last summer's bush fires taught us some terrifying lessons about the importance of being prepared and having a plan. Learn from the experience of others this bush fire season. https://youtu.be/EYuzNLUDJ3Q

23.01.2022 You don’t have to live right near the bush to be at risk. Even if your home is a few streets back, you may be at risk. Can you guess the main reason homes are lost to bush fires?

22.01.2022 The seven essential items to pack in your Survival Kit are; a portable battery-operated radio; a waterproof torch; spare batteries; a first aid kit with manual; woollen blankets; emergency contact numbers; drinking water. Add cash and credit cards; medications and toiletries; special requirements for children, the disabled or the elderly; a mobile phone and charger; important documents; and a change of clothes for everyone before you leave. Don’t forget to prepare for your pets too. Head over to myfireplan.com.au to learn more. https://www.myfireplan.com.au/leave-early- your-safest-choice/important-items-checklist

22.01.2022 Just advising everyone that we have placed an AED in a cabinet on the front of the Killcare Fire Station for emergency community use. Let’s hope it is never required.

21.01.2022 2020 - the year that keeps on giving! This afternoon, the Killcare Firies were first on the scene at a house fire at Hardys Bay. Many, many thanks to all emergency services who attended this fire (RFS, NSW Fire and Rescue, Police and Ambulance). We all worked well as a team to get the job done. Fantastic. Thanks also to the couple of members of the Public who were putting a hose on the neighbouring house when we arrived. A couple of points - 1) once again the nearest hydrant wasn’t easily accessible as a car was parked on top of it. Luckily the owner came and moved it pretty quickly. 2) to the man who abused one of our Volunteers when we had to temporarily close the road - Shame on you!!!!

21.01.2022 Hazard Reduction Notification - NPWS are hoping to perform a hazard reduction on Friday 23/4/2021 between MacDonald St Killcare Heights and the bush near Putty Beach. The Killcare Firies will be assisting with this burn.

21.01.2022 Tonight - Our 2021 Annual Recruitment Info Night, 7:30pm at the Killcare Fire Station. See you soon!

21.01.2022 National Youth Week: 16th-24th April This week, the Killcare Firies would like to acknowledge the many amazing, young members in our Brigade. Our young members should be proud of their contribution as they continue to shape the future of the NSW RFS.

20.01.2022 Tonight the Killcare Firies held their AGM. The normal reports were made, an election occurred, long service awards were given and the Killcare Member of the Year was announced. This year the Member of the Year award was given to John Sibbald. John joined the Brigade in 2016. Since starting, John has been heavily involved in all aspects of the Brigade, especially training and Fire Mitigation. He gained his Crew Leader qualification earlier this week, allowing him to stand for Deputy Captain. To quote Terry, which I believe is the sentiment of all members Well done mate, will be a pleasure to have you as a crew leader. He has attended the most fire calls over the last two years and was still ranked high the years prior to this. Thanks John for everything you do for the Brigade.

20.01.2022 We made the inaugural edition of the Coast Community Pelican Post! It outlines our partnership with the Killcare Surfclub, WTKCA, the Hardys Bay Residents Group and Killy Cares and the development of our Community Resilience Plan.

20.01.2022 The Killy Nippers missed out on Santa coming to visit them in the Fire Truck (silly Covid) BUT the Easter Bunny stepped up!!!

20.01.2022 This year, our face-to-face Get Ready Weekend Open Day is now being held online Look for our preparation tips in your newsfeed over the next couple of weeks. 20.01.2022 Happy International Women’s Day! The Killcare Firies have a good bunch of ladies as members. They can hold their own on the Fireground, three recently got their truck licences with another three in the near future, they always bring a laugh to training and are great to be around. Thanks Ladies!!

20.01.2022 You know the alert levels of Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning. The way these are displayed on our website and Fires Near Me NSW smartphone app is c...hanging. Soon you’ll see these new icons. It’s part of the new Australian Warning System, to help you receive consistent information in emergencies no matter where you live, work or travel. While the icons may look different, what they mean doesn't change - you should check for information about what to do to protect you and your family. Keep an eye out for the new icons later this week. Check https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//gen/australian-warnings-system for info.

19.01.2022 Last chance training getting ready for their BF Assessment tomorrow.

18.01.2022 The Killcare Firies visited the Pretty Beach Preschool yesterday. The kids were very attentive and we hope that they enjoyed our visit.

18.01.2022 House Fire tonight. Another Firie request - can everyone in the Killcare / Wagstaffe community please go out tomorrow and try and find the closest hydrant to their home. Please see photos for more information on what they look like and how to locate them. When a house fire occurs, like tonight, we need to find them quickly so we can connect a standpipe and feed water to our fire trucks (and then to the burning house). We have found that some home owners park their cars over the top of them, grass or a garden grows over the top of them, builders put debris on top of them, Road base sometimes cover them. When you find it, don’t open it, but clear around it so that it can easily be identified by fire fighters. If there is a problem, PLEASE report it to Council so they can fix it. Thank you.

18.01.2022 Killcare Wagstaffe Community - it’s time to Get Ready for the upcoming fire season. Please watch the video in the post below for more information. It’s a good video as it focusses on the urban interface which is pertinent in our community.

17.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who popped down to the Killcare Fire Station tonight for the Recruitment Info Night. It was great to meet you. If you couldn’t attend but are still interested, come down tomorrow night (or any Wednesday night) at 7:30pm. Hope to see you there!

17.01.2022 On the 15 November 2020, we welcomed the new Killcare 1 to the Fire Station and said goodbye and thankyou to the old Killcare 1.

17.01.2022 Do you remember when we had no power for about a week or so due to storm damage?? While the SES is the main organisation that looks after storm damage, on a lot of occasions it is the local Firies that attends to local storm damage, especially when the Community is not accessible to outside help. Recently our members have undertaken both their Chainsaw and Safe Working on Roofs re-certifications in preparation for the Storm season. Below is a great post from the NSW SES - Go...sford Unit about how people can prepare their properties. It has a lot of similarities to how to prepare your property for bushfire. Lets, as a Community, get prepared for all types of emergencies!

17.01.2022 While his big brother was preparing for his BF Assessment tomorrow and his dad was helping with the training, Hugo took it upon himself to cut down some trees to make our training area larger!

16.01.2022 If there is a fire in Killcare/Wagstaffe area you will find its alert level on the NSW RFS website and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app. What will be your sign for putting your fire plan into action?

16.01.2022 There are 5 simple steps to prepare a property for bush fires: 1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs to stop the spread of fire. 2. Mow grass and remove the cuttings, have a cleared area around your home. 3. Remove material that can burn, like wood piles and furniture. 4. Clear debris from your gutters to stop embers causing a fire.... 5. Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that can reach around your home and make sure you’ve got a reliable source of water. Remember, you need to prepare well beforehand as leaving it to the last minute is too late. Get prepared now at myfireplan.com.au See more

16.01.2022 Fact: Bush fires are unpredictable and in dangerous conditions, you may not get an Emergency Alert message in time. It’s important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area and that you have made a bush fire survival plan. Leaving early is your safest option. Improve or make your fire plan at myfireplan.com.au

15.01.2022 As you noticed last weekend, the RFS and other agencies are getting ready for the upcoming fire season by conducting a number of Hazard Reduction burns. These will continue while weather conditions are favourable. My question to you: What are you doing to get your property ready for the upcoming fire season? The NSW RFS has worked with the NRMA on their new First Saturdays campaign. This Saturday is the first Saturday of the month? What have you got planned?... https://youtu.be/4V1jmZHJgrg

15.01.2022 Are you an Australian resident living with disability or chronic health conditions, or care for someone who is? The NSW Rural Fire Service is working with the U...niversity of Sydney who are carrying out a project supporting people with disability to prepare for, respond to and recover from an emergency event such as bush fires, pandemics and floods. The researchers are keen to know how prepared you are for an emergency, what you can do for yourself and what supports you need in an emergency. You can take part by completing an online survey: People with disability: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=ML4LC3KMEF For carers: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=N9MCMYJDCX If you prefer to speak to someone, please email your name and contact number to [email protected] This research will support NSW RFS and other emergency agencies to better educate and support communities on how to plan and prepare for, and respond to, emergencies and natural disasters. Please share with anyone you know who might be interested in supporting the research. The survey closes on 31 March 2021.

15.01.2022 The Central Coast Firies are a great bunch! Always ready to help out others. In the photos below, the Killcare Firies are working with the Empire Bay Firies with storm damage on the coast.

15.01.2022 A Killcare crew will be assisting with the Mardi Dam HR tomorrow. We are helping prepare the Central Coast for the upcoming fire season. What are you doing with your property? Don’t leave it to the last minute. Fires don’t wait until you are prepared.

14.01.2022 Hey guess what? Our monthly cake stall returns this Saturday morning down at Killcare shops. We will have your favourite Firies relish, marmalade and honey etc. Unfortunately due to Covid, we sadly can not accept baked goods from the community to sell. (Sorry). We are so excited to catch up with the community. So please come down and have a chat. We are really looking forward to it.

14.01.2022 We all know how important hydrants are as they provide water to fire trucks in emergencies. The Killcare Firies have been conducting regular hydrant hunts in the local area(see photo 3) to find our hydrants and then we report missing or dodgy hydrants to Council. We are fortunate to have Council staff working in our area at the moment who have been locating and fixing our hydrants. Thanks so much Central Coast Council. If anyone sees the Council staff working on the hydrant program, please go up to them and say thank you. Their hard work is helping protect our Community.

13.01.2022 A BIG congrats to the Killcare class of 2020. Passing your BF qualification today, boosting the Brigade numbers for the Fire season.

13.01.2022 Today we have a crew out helping the SES with some of their outstanding jobs. Stay safe and dry everyone!

12.01.2022 The mind absolutely boggles!!! Why would you park in front of a fire trail gate, especially on a Total Fire Ban day????

12.01.2022 Some photos from the Mardi Dam HR which we helped with today.

12.01.2022 You may have seen the Killcare Firies walking around the Killcare shops today. As part of Allan’s Crew Leader Supervision qualification, he took the crew through the Pre-incident Plans (PIPs) of the shops. This allows the Brigade to be better prepared if a fire started in these shops. It was also noted that numerous hydrants close to the shops were buried and could not be found easily. So from our previous post, please don’t forget to find the closest hydrant to your home and clear around it so that it can be easily found in an emergency.

11.01.2022 Our Cake stall will be on this Saturday morning outside Killcare Cellars!! The usual relish etc will be there for purchase. We will also be accepting baked goods from the Community for sale. Hint, Hint! We do kindly ask that those baking and donating be Covid symptom free. Thanks

11.01.2022 Keep track of the alert level so you know what you should do. ADVICE level means a fire has started. There is no immediate danger. Stay up to date in case the situation changes. WATCH AND ACT means there is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action to protect you and your family. EMERGENCY WARNING is the highest level of Bush Fire Alert. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately. Any delay now puts your life at risk. Improve or make a plan that will give your property, your family and yourself the best chance of survival at myfireplan.com.au

10.01.2022 Introducing our new Killcare Cat 1 Appliance.

10.01.2022 It’s time to prepare your Emergency Survival Kit for bush fire season. Tell us what you’ll pack in your kit?

10.01.2022 The Killcare Firies turned out to a dumped car which was torched up on Hawke Head in the early hours of this morning. They extinguished the car and any surrounding vegetation which also caught on fire as a result.

10.01.2022 Don’t forget to pop down and see us this morning. Come for a chat or buy some yummy relish, marmalade, honey etc

09.01.2022 A good little video to watch about what to pack in an emergency.

07.01.2022 Please do the Firies a favour and don’t park in front of access points to Fire trails! We have all noticed an increased interest in bushwalking and mountain biking in Bouddi National Park. In turn, we have also noticed more people thinking it is ok to park their cars in front of fire trail entry points. It is not ok! It is actually selfish to the Firies and the local community which the Firies are trying to protect. We need easy access to these trails if a fire breaks out. In particular, the trails off Hawke Head Drive and the top of Wards Hill Rd.

06.01.2022 Fact: There will never be as many fire trucks as there are houses. Do not depend on a fire truck being available at your home. But if you and your home are well prepared, you stand a better chance of surviving a bush fire. There are simple things you can do around your home to prepare it for a bush fire, like keeping the grass low and having a cleared area around your home. Learn more and get ready at rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare

03.01.2022 A Total Fire Ban has been declared for tomorrow with a Severe Fire Danger Rating.

02.01.2022 One day until our 2021 Annual Recruitment Info Night! It’s a great Brigade to be part of! Tuesday 16 February, 7:30pm at Killcare Fire Station.... Hope to see you there!

02.01.2022 Fact: Your safest option is to leave early. A bush fire can be a terrifying situation, intense heat and flames will make you tire quickly, it will be difficult to see and breathe. You may become confused or disorientated. Powerlines and fallen trees can block roads and make driving dangerous. It’s always better to leave early, before the fire arrives. Visit myfireplan. com.au and make a bush fire survival plan, it will help you make important decisions like when to leave or what you need to be prepared to stay.

01.01.2022 Fact: Only 6.9% of NSW was impacted by bush fire in the 2019/20 fire season. This means there is a significant bush fire risk for the coming 2020/21 fire season. It only takes 5 minutes to improve or make a plan that will give your property, your family and yourself the best chance of survival. Get ready now at myfireplan.com.au

01.01.2022 It was a busy night for Central Coast firefighters - crews faced with a multi-storey house fire at Killcare Heights. Luckily the holiday home was empty at the time.
