25.01.2022 Killester College Reunions
25.01.2022 Last week our VCAL students went on The Salvation Army Australia's ‘Youth Homelessness City Tour’ for an experience they will never forget. The tour aims to challenge stereotypes and support students to better understand the drivers of homelessness in Australia. We hope that this experience will empower our young women to seek social justice. One student Tereza commented that "It was a great experience to help us understand a side of the city that isn't spoken about." Our Senior VCAL students then went on to visit the Immigration Museum to explore the exhibition of 'Identity, Yours, Mine, Ours'.
25.01.2022 Last week our Yr. 9 Drama students were set a challenge to tell a story in three pictures. We had some fantastic submissions, many of which included our students' talented families! Heres one students submission titled The shocking discovery of an unknown new animal species.
25.01.2022 Last week our students received their care packs that were lovingly put together by a few Killester staff members. The packs included origami paper to encourage mindfulness, a beach ball to make sure everyone keeps moving, bookmarks and instructions to learn the Nutbush dance! We are so looking forward to getting back to school so we can see everyones dance moves. The Nutbush is ingrained in many of our memories so the steps should flow easily . Wed love to see some pics of you keeping active with your beach balls comment below on the post.
24.01.2022 Last week our Year 9’s campaigned to support and raise awareness for Project Compassion. The focus of the day was to ‘Aspire not to have more, but to be more.’ They set up their tables in the Year 9 area to raise money for this incredible cause - they had a face-painting station, henna tattoo artistry, games and lots of handmade products for sale. We were so proud of the enthusiasm, love and hard work that you put into this venture.
24.01.2022 Did you know that Killester’s Visual Arts Department has its very own Dark Room? The darkness allows the processing of the light-sensitive photographic materials like film and photographic paper. Today we get a sneak peek into our Year 10 Photography students creating their photograms in our darkroom. The ‘oohs and ahhs’ made it clear that they enjoyed the experience tremendously.
24.01.2022 We were delighted to hear that Kaela Feldman, one of our 2020 graduates, received an Excellence Award from Holmesglen for her outstanding efforts in her VET Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Congratulations Kaela!
24.01.2022 Today we remember those who are no longer with us. Our Killester community has spent time reflecting on this and today we’d like to pray for those staff we have lost over the years. And for all loved ones we would like to remember. Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life:... hear our prayers and thanksgivings You know all our sighing and longings: be near to us and teach us to fix our hope on you for all whom we remember this day; fulfil in them the purpose of your love; and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
24.01.2022 This week we will be starting our ‘Did you Know’ series where we feature a fact about our beloved school which you may or may not know. This week we focus on Killester’s oak tree which has been the center of a number of ceremonies over the years. The significance of the oak for the Brigidines dates back to 1807 when Dr. Daniel Delaney, the founder of the congregation, planted an acorn in the garden of the first Brigidine Convent. This symbolised the seed of religious life he had founded. It is said that he got the acorn from the large oak at Kildare which was believed to be planted by the legendary St Brigid. Killester’s cherished oak was planted in 1956 by Sr Marie Feiss’s father. Thanks to Heather Davis, a past Killester teacher, who included this historical fact in her publication 'Killester Remembers'.
24.01.2022 Today marks the first day of Spring and our flowers are blooming as if to prove it! What a glorious day it is in Melbourne today. Were looking forward to having you back on campus so you can enjoy Killesters flowers in person, but in the meantime we hope these pictures suffice. Spring has sprung at Killester!
23.01.2022 Meet Jenny Lindell who graduated from Killester College in 1970. Jenny had an interesting career by starting her life as a Medical Imaging Technologist and then shifting across into Politics. She began her political career as an Electorate Officer, then became a Member of Parliament and finally ended up as Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Jenny was the 35th person to hold the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly position and only the second woman. Wow - what an i...ncredible accomplishment. Throughout her working career Jenny did not take the opportunities presented to her lightly. She was fully aware of the many sacrifices her parents made to ensure that she would be given the educational opportunities that her mother was denied. She found her time in politics hugely rewarding but also challenging to balance time between work and family. Jenny had some beautiful words of wisdom for our girls at Killester. These words were in fact given to her by Sister Bernadine as she left Killester in 1970- ‘the high soul takes the high road, the low soul takes the low road and in between on the misty plains the rest rock to and fro‘. I have always interpreted this to mean that it’s a choice to be made - high, low, in between - nothing is set in stone, your future is in your hands. Thank you for sharing your inspiring journey. Please read the full interview by clicking on the link below. https://bit.ly/3kDxFwK
23.01.2022 Our students Charli, Charlotte, Leeah, Stephanie, Laura and Sienna had the opportunity to interview AFLW superstar and Boxing Champion Tayla Harris. They covered a range of topics including increasing opportunities for women in sport and promoting mental health and wellbeing. Such an insightful, knowledgeable and overall great role model. Thank you to Tayla and @allenandundwin for making this all happen! #morethanakick
23.01.2022 The VCAL class have been making posters to remind everyone to wear a mask at Killester from Thursday. Thanks Kaela for this great image!
23.01.2022 Everyone associated with Killester College knows the phrase strength & kindliness. A wonderful image by Catherine Karagiannis from Year 10 St Catherine.
22.01.2022 Today is Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day! This nationwide initiative highlights the importance of HPE in the Australian Curriculum self-care is something that Killester holds in great esteem. The restrictions in Melbourne have meant that our usual activities to celebrate this day have not been possible, so instead, our Sports Leaders kept the Killester girls moving from home through a virtual live workout conducted by Ms. Camilleri. Thanks to all the girls who participated, as well as a huge shout out to our incredible HEPE Department! We are so proud of the care our Sports Leaders have shown through setting virtual workouts and challenges, sending weekly encouraging newsletters and developing helpful resources for keeping active! Here are some pictures of both staff and students keeping active for HPE day.
22.01.2022 2020 sure has been a year to remember. To make sure that nothing is forgotten our fantastic VCAL Students have planned something ingenious a Killester Time Capsule. Staff and students will be given the opportunity to add something to the capsule before it is closed when the Year 12s finish. More information will be divulged during Term 4. Nows the time to get your thinking caps on about what to add! Wed love to hear your ideas below.

We are well prepared for this return to remote learning and we will continue to deliver an excellent curriculum and support the wellbeing of all in our community. Please continue to pray for all those impacted by this virus and those working hard to heal the sick and find a cure.
21.01.2022 Two of our fabulous Year 12 VCAL students, Jasmine Ngo and Christine Nabalarua, developed this fantastic poster especially for Killester Staff. The poster provides some simple stretches and exercises that can be done throughout the day to relieve muscle tightness. Thanks girls we so appreciate the thought and care that has gone into this!

Her latest work involves working to further develop blood-based diagnostic tests for Alzheimers disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, in addition to cance...r and infectious diseases. Wow! Dr Cheng had some sound advice for our girls- Work on your communication skills together with your studies. All company goals require a team of people with different expertise. Theres no point in being good at what you do if you cant communicate with others or non-experts.. Click on the link to find out more about her career pathway and highlights. https://bit.ly/2GVE7B1
20.01.2022 Last night we held our Year 10 Information Evening through a Google Meet meeting. Over 100 families were in attendance such a great turn out. 18.01.2022 Today is National R U Okay Day. Its a day of action that reminds us that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK?. This years message is 'There's more to say after R U OK?'. R U OK Day provides conversation tips, resources and more information to engage in meaningful conversations with those around you. Here are some thoughtful comments from Killesters Student Wellbeing Leader, Luana Doko, Friends, families and students of Killester, in these extraordinary times well...being support and understanding is vital. Killesters Virtual Brigid's Well (link below) is a helpful resource for families and students with links to wellbeing apps, fact sheets and external support services. 18.01.2022 This week Year 7 to 10 students began the second remote learning experience. To support student wellbeing we have included a new resource for students within the KOOL remote learning website - #MeTime. There is a dedicated time each week Wednesday mornings, for students to focus on their wellbeing. Students can access links to a wide range of wellbeing/fun activities according to their interests in the areas of spirituality, creativity and physical activity. Our students have enjoyed the #MeTime initiative, doing things such as origami, dancing and journalling.
18.01.2022 The house committee is running a challenge this week to create a poster or flyer to promote hope, encouragement, and staying connected during these hard times. Each poster submitted earns 10 points for the students house, with the best poster/flyer being awarded a prize. The challenge ends on Friday at 3:30pm, so there is still time to get creative! Here are some of the amazing submissions we have already received:
17.01.2022 The results from Killesters Creative Poster Challenge are in! In first place, with her poster "Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations" was Khushmeet Sandhu (Yr. 8 St Patrick) congratulations on such a fantastic poster. 17.01.2022 A message from the Killester Sports Committee Remember to make a move and stay active!
17.01.2022 This morning our Year 7 & 8 students were encouraged to login and join 'The Biggest Assembly' run by PROJECT ROCKIT. PROJECT ROCKIT is an Australian youth-driven movement empowering school students to stand up to bullying, hate and prejudice. The organisation gave the students '6 great tips to challenge and end bullying. They also explored how to use social media for good. Kelly Chi, one of our Year 8 students, said I have learnt so much about how to deal with cyber-bullying. This was such a fun experience. I have learnt that you should always stand together and be prepared for any situation.". A big thanks to PROJECT ROCKIT for empowering our girls!
16.01.2022 During lockdown, some ten weeks ago now, our girls received care packs in the post, amongst other goodies were sunflower seeds for them to plant. This was to remind them that even in isolation, when times are tough, something beautiful can grow. And something beautiful did grow! Here are some pictures of one of our student's sunflower plants which is about to bloom. Our student Lyn who grew this impressive sunflower plant said I've always loved growing flowers from seeds, before this I grew poppies. I'm hoping that after it flowers, it'll produce more seeds for me to grow. I've always wanted to grow sunflower seeds, so it's great that the school gave me an opportunity to do so. Thanks for sharing Lyn - we are hugely impressed with your horticultural skills ;). Have a wonderful weekend one and all.
16.01.2022 Did you know that we have FIVE sets of twins in Year 7! We thought that was quite extraordinary and so did our community. Here is what the Dandenong Journal had to say. https://bit.ly/3sEaPtR
16.01.2022 The Twilight Opening is happening! Here’s a short video of the ‘Stage Band’ performing.
15.01.2022 Our next Alumni snapshot is focused on Dr. Kathleen Lawson. Dr Lawson’s varied career path shows that it’s never too late to change direction to pursue your dreams. She has been a Travel Consultant, a Nurse, a Chiropractor, a Business Owner, a Lecturer and most recently her love for music has led her to combine her career in Health and Wellness and Music, recently completing a Master’s degree in Music Therapy at the University of Melbourne. She is a true picture of a Lifelong... Learner - what an inspiration. She attributes her drive to wanting to give her two small children something to springboard from. Her story is also one that should be inspiring for our current and future students- even though her VCE results weren’t what she had hoped for, she believes that this was in fact the making of her. It gave her the motivation and drive to reach for her dreams. Here’s a snippet of advice from Dr. Kathleen to our students: do the best with what you've got, just get on with it, and trust that what you need will eventually be there and support your journey towards where you’re meant to be. Be sure to read on in her full interview on the link below. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and reminding us that it’s never too late to pursue your passions. It also reminds us of the power of being a lifelong learner. https://bit.ly/3wBZNI2
15.01.2022 Yesterday, our Year 12 VET Kitchen Operations class prepared take away meals that staff were able to purchase for lunch and dinner. The students created 3 delicious dishes- Chicken Pho, Southern fried chicken drumsticks with Texas slaw as well as Chicken, leek and bocconcini parcels with mixed greens. The work produced by these students was outstanding, and staff were very pleased with their meals.

12.01.2022 And just like that Term 3 of 2020 has drawn to a close. We are so proud of everything that the Killester College community has achieved in what has been an extraordinary year. Here are some encouraging messages and relaxation tips for our girls from Killesters teaching and support staff. Have a wonderful break one and all. See you in Term 4!
11.01.2022 This week we’d like you to get to know Vi Lam, our devoted ICT and Media Teacher, a bit better. Vi’s favourite part of his job is interacting with students. He adds that as a teacher if this isn’t the favourite part of your job then you shouldn't be teaching. Well said Vi ;). Like many here, his favorite thing about Killester is the enthusiastic students and dedicated staff. This sentiment seems to be echoed by the whole Killester community. As a teacher Vi finds his motivat...ion by understanding that students are a work in progress, they are full of potential and once in a while, as a teacher you get to play a part in uncovering that potential. His words of wisdom for our Killester girls were- Be conscious of time, it is precious. To read more about Vi click on the link below. https://bit.ly/363Hmke

10.01.2022 A project that is close to our heart is the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP). It was started by the Brigidine Sisters in 2001 to work for a humane, just and inclusive approach for people seeking asylum in Australia. We are actively collecting goods for this cause which will be donated at the end of the year. Pictured here are some of the donations we have received from one class so far, thanks to everyone who has donated. We still have another 3 weeks to collect goods so keep them coming :)! Any contribution, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated and will go a long way.
10.01.2022 SYN 90.7fm & SYN on DAB+ have scheduled the VCAL Radio Program for this Friday, August 7th, from 12pm-1pm. Let's all tune in and give them a great audience!
10.01.2022 On Monday 20th of July, Sasha, Alice and I arranged consultations with some Killester teachers about their skin care routine, makeup (if they wear any) and their hand health. We are all doing our Certificate III in Beauty Services but because of Covid 19 our course with practical work has been cancelled for six weeks. Due to it being postponed, we decided to share our knowledge with the Killester community. Sasha consulted with Ms Scott, Ms Larritt and Mr Harte while I consu...lted with Ms Jamieson, Ms Heys and Mr ONeill. Alice consulted with Ms Braiden and Ms Collins. We enjoyed doing this very much as we are missing out on a lot. We should be doing this at TAFE but this opportunity at school allowed us to practice the things we have learnt. - Ella Pollard, Year 11 VCAL Student
07.01.2022 To encourage students to read during remote learning, the Killester Library has set up the Bagabook service. Students can order books from the library online, and pick them up from the school in the afternoons between 3.00 and 3.30 pm.
07.01.2022 Our Year 9 Humanities class has spent the last week creating their own personal fictitious political parties. These political parties reflected their own personal values and political beliefs. Today they voted in their very own election - they even had voting stations scattered around the Year level. The students enjoyed the process as it helped them understand the electoral process which will help them vote in the future. The entire experience reminded our girls that voting gives them the opportunity to have their voices and opinions heard and that we have a say in who will lead us.
07.01.2022 Did you know that as a Killester parent or student you can buy and sell second-hand uniforms and textbooks from the Sustainable School Shop? Killester has a subscription with this service so no fees are charged when buying or selling Killester items. All you need to do is register on the sustainable schools website. The Killester book and uniform lists are already loaded into the system to make the Ad listing process easy, fast and accurate. https://www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au/

All the best for tomorrow girls - you’ve worked hard but have enjoyed every minute of the process. We’re rooting for you!
05.01.2022 Wed like to give a HUGE shout out to our School Administrative Support Staff (SASS). The SAS Staff could be noted as the engine behind our College, making sure everything runs smoothly in the background. They are the warmth you are greeted with when you first arrive on our grounds. They are the friendly and efficient canteen staff who make sure we are all well-nourished and cared for. The list goes on! Comment below to give someone a special mention. We are so grateful for everything you do. Killester would not be what it is without you.

04.01.2022 Kicking off the start of Term 3 with Wear your Beanie to School day!
04.01.2022 Wow, do we have an inspirational lockdown story for you! During the first Victorian lockdown two of our students, Jade and Eden set themselves the goal of seeing what they could achieve by keeping active. They started by researching the many virtual events available across the globe. They entered events in Germany, England, America, Australia, New Zealand, and more. They virtually trekked the Inca Trail, The Ring of Kerry, Hadrian's Wall and The Great Ocean Road. Jade was the... first in the world to finish The Shark Bay challenge of 180km. Between the two of them, 55 trees were donated and planted on their behalf, they supported breast cancer awareness by participating in a Mothers Day walk, and supported Heart Kids Australia through the Shark Bay event. Their mum commented that These events gave them something to work towards. I hope when they're older, they'll look back at this pandemic and be proud of what they achieved. We are so proud of what the two of you accomplished and we are certain that your story will inspire others. We’d love to hear any other lockdown journeys!

03.01.2022 A few thoughtful year 11 VCAL students have created this helpful infographic especially for the staff at Killester. It shows some easy stretches to help relieve back and neck pain while were working from home. These exercises can be done from your desk or wherever youre sitting with your computer. Make sure that you take some time out today to look after yourself. Thank you Junjila, Kartika and Alice we so appreciate you!

02.01.2022 Today on Easter Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. May this be a time to remember and reflect on Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. We pray that today you find time to be still and thankful for the price He paid for us. Happy Easter to our Killester community - we hope that you have a happy, safe and restful break.
01.01.2022 VCAL students were working with SYN FM Friday to create a recording to be aired in the following weeks. Stay tuned for more details. Well done girls (& Mr Harte)! Photos taken by Christine.
