22.01.2022 Kaya toast is believed to have been invented by Hainan immigrants to the Malay peninsula working on British ships. The dish was believed to have been adapted from toast served by the Hainanese when they were working as cooks for the British. Fruit jams that were served with toast was replaced with kaya, a jam local to Southeast Asia, as fruit jams were considered exotic and expensive by the local population during colonial rule.The dish was known to be served since 1919 in Singapore, with the founding of Kheng Hoe Heng (now known as Killiney Kopitiam) by a Hainanese immigrant. @ Central Park Sydney

Since we are unable to travel offshore, i have done the next best thing and have headed to my local Singapore venue @killineykopitiamcentralpark located @centralparkmall_ to satisfy my cravings. @killineykopitiamcentralpark provides hawker-style items that you find in the busy streets of Singapore like the Ha...inanese Chicken Rice, Laksa, Roti and Kaya Toast, plus there also have many Singapore favourite main dishes on offer such as the Singapore Chilli or Black Pepper Crab, Sweet & Sour Whole Barramundi and Rendang Beef. I have been searching for a venue in Sydney that has perfected the authentic Singapore Chilli flavour that I love, and I have to say that @killineykopitiamcentralpark Singapore Chilli sauce is the best I have had here in Sydney as well as their Hainan rice. Definitely a place to check out. 11.01.2022 According to the Singapore Book of Records, this original shop at 67 Killiney Road is Singapore’s oldest existing Hainanese Coffeeshop, having been around since 1919. The shop used to be known as Qiong Xin He and was a typical Hainanese Coffeeshop which served really good Kopi and Kaya Toast. It was only in 1993 that the shop was bought over by Mr Woon who then changed the name to Killiney Kopitiam and started expanding its operations. Fortunately, when Mr Woon took over Killiney Kopitiam, he managed to persuade Ah Gong and two other Hainanese men to continue serving the Kopi and Kaya toast.

11.01.2022 Located along the busy streets of Killiney Road, the existing shop front was founded in late 1919. Back then, while it was an antiquated yet humble shop, its famous bread toast and warm beverages were popular among many. Though it was just an ordinary Hainanese Kopitiam, it promised well-brewed coffee and tea, not to mention traditional charcoal-grilled bread toast. Mr. Woon, a regular customer of the shop, loved it so much that he wished to own it. In 1993, the dream became ...reality when he finally bought the shop, renovated it and renamed it ‘Killiney Kopitiam’. When Mr Woon Tek Seng took over the reins of management, he believed that it was crucial to uphold the legacy. Despite major renovations to the shop front, the present coffee shop retains the traditional working style and influence. A key factor, for which he is very grateful, lies in the three workers who have stayed on and helped him, by means of passing on their skills in making good kaya, bread toast, coffee and tea. Today, Killiney Kopitiam has an extended menu offering a wider variety of local delicacies. We have also expanded to other parts of Singapore so as to be closer to you, our valued customer.

Mud crabs are commonly used and are stir-fried in a semi-thick, sweet and savoury tomato-and-chilli-based sauce. Despite its name, chilli crab is not a very spicy dish.
