03.01.2022 The Yawuru calendar shows six seasons. The Yawuru people are the native title holders of the town of Broome, including areas of land and sea in and around the location. We are currently experiencing Wirlburu warming season Spring: September The country is warming up. The lifestyle for the Yawuru communities during Wirlburu The transition period from cool to hot season occurs in September, during which the westerly wind starts to blow. Both days and nights are hotter. Dry ti...me but clouds begin to appear. Dust storms may still occur. There are many mud skippers and mud creepers around during Wirlburu. They are good bait for catching the abundant reef fish that are all fat during this time such as sea perch, bluebones, rock cod and different varieties of snapper and bream. Also fat are varieities of shellfish such as, mud cockles, pearl meat, mud cockles and mangrove crabs. On land, it is a good time for catching turkey and collecting their eggs. It is also a good time for collecting the eggs of other birds such as the different snipes. Also, the different cockatoos have had chicks that were easily caught. The acacia pods dry out and the wild pear is beginning to flower. Bush onions are dried out and inedible. Which season will you be visiting us? 03.01.2022 BIG TIDES BRING STAIRCASE BACK FOR 2021 Broome will experience its biggest tides of the year this week aligning with the first Staircase to the Moon for 2021.... The natural phenomena is created by the rising of a full moon reflecting off exposed mudflats. The most stunning staircases occur after a large tide. Broome’s tides will get as high as 10.51 meters this week (upstaged as usual by Derby, where the tide will be a massive 12.05 metres ). Astronomer Greg Quicke (also known as Space Gandalf) says even though he looks at space for a living, he still finds time to watch the staircase. It means just as much beauty to me as it does for anybody seeing it for the first time, It is an amazing phenomenon he said. The definition of a full moon is an alignment between the sun, on the western horizon, the earth in the middle and the moon on the eastern horizon. So, we’ve got this alignment which means that just after sunset we have the moon rising over the wet, glistening mudflats of Roebuck Bay.
