25.01.2022 Day 69/100 - A New World Has Begun is an original composition by my very talented mother, ValmaiRuth Harris (c) 2006. It was written in 2006 in response to the Bali Bombings and the spout of terrorist acts that were gaining world attention and changing the world as we knew it. In the same year as it's composition, it was presented at the State School Spectacular in Sydney. #100daysuku2021 ... #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelelove #originalsongs #originalmusic #songwriters #ukulelelife https://youtu.be/jbkg7HM9COo

25.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK - DAY 3 Day 74/100 - Kokomo "Kokomo" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys from the 1988 film Cocktail and album Still Cruisin'. Written by John Phillips, Scott McKenzie, Mike Love, and Terry Melcher, its lyrics describe two lovers taking a trip to a relaxing place on Kokomo, a utopic island off the Florida Keys. In addition to the fictional Kokomo, the song also makes references to many real Caribbean islands such as Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, M...artinique, Montserrat, and many others. The song was released as a single on July 18, 1988 by Elektra Records and became a number one hit in the United States, Japan, and Australia. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television in 1988, but lost to Phil Collins' "Two Hearts" (from the film Buster). "Two Hearts" and Carly Simon's "Let the River Run" from Working Girl jointly beat it for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #kokomo #beachboys https://youtu.be/UrVWcbiYB3Q

24.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK - DAY 6 Day 77/100 - White Sandy Beach (Duc Huy - aka stage name "Willie Dann") The man who wrote 'White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i' was actually from Vietnam and nobody knew who he was for a long time.... Willie Dann was a mystery. His song had been a staple of Hawaiin musicians sets for many years, and Israel Kaanoi Kamakawiwoole band had even recorded it in 1991. But there was nothing on file saying who Willie Dann actually was. He hadn't written any other songs that they could find, there was no address for him. As a result, all royalties for the song were kept to one side for many years in case he should show up. In 2005, 12 years after the album was released, the record company got a call from a Vietnamese guy called Duc Huy claiming he had written the song and that Willie Dann was a stage name. He'd married in Waikiki and wrote the song after a walk along the beach with his wife. He was now on his way to LA after breaking up with said wife and was looking to start a new life, and thought he'd pop by to see if that song he'd written the last time he was here was worth anything. He was handed a crisp cheque for about $50,000, and now receives all royalties. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #ukulelelife #whitesandybeach https://youtu.be/sjzxDzW-46k

22.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK DAY 1 Due to it being so unexpectedly cold here in Vic at the moment, I thought I'd warm my soul with some music inspired by the tropics. Day 72/100 - Hula Hana - Jane Brucker The song Hula Hana was written by Americsn actress and screenwriter Jane Rachel Brucker, who is best known for playing the part of Lisa Houseman, Baby's elder sister in the hit 1987 film Dirty Dancing. ... Fun fact...She actually wrote this silly song (that she sang in the movie), while killing time on the set... go figure!! Perplexed about what the song was actually about, I studied the lyrics, and it turns out it actually follows a pretty classic folk song motif about a woman demanding impossible gifts from her suitors: Hula Hana of Kamana Whala Hula Bay Who’s this hula hana, of Kamana Whala Hula Bay? She will hula when you have a lovely gift she wants, you’ll hear her say, Bring me a pineapple that doesn't sting a bird that swims a fish that sings, I wanna, I really wanna, Bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten jama and a blue banana, I canna canna, Bring me a pineapple that doesn't sting a bird that swims a fish that sings, I wanna, I really wanna, Bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten jama and a blue banana, I canna canna, And you can wackle all you wanna, while I hula all the day away.... #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #dirtydancing #hulahana #ukulelesongs https://youtu.be/FG8hYqmRbkw

22.01.2022 Day 70/100 - Minnie the Moocher (Cab Calloway) "Minnie the Moocher" is a jazz song first recorded in 1931 by Cab Calloway and His Orchestra, selling over a million copies. "Minnie the Moocher" is most famous for its nonsensical ad libbed ("scat") lyrics "Hi De Hi De Hi De Ho". In performances, Calloway would have the audience and the band members participate by repeating each scat phrase in a form of call and response, until making it too fast and complicated for the audienc...e to replicate it. In 1978, Calloway recorded a disco version of "Minnie the Moocher" on RCA Records which reached #91 on the Billboard R&B chart. "Minnie the Moocher" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and in 2019 was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress. It has been argued that the record was the first jazz record to sell a million copies. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #ukulelelife #minniethemoocher #kazootrumpet https://youtu.be/5SUFqoSeDNY

19.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK DAY 2 Day 73/100 - Pearly Shells - Edwards & Pober The song "Pearly Shells" was based on the melody of an old Hawaiian song, ‘Pupu A ‘O ‘Ewa’. English lyrics were written by Webley ‘Web’ Edwards, creator of the radio program Hawaii Calls, and Leon Pober, and was first recorded in English by The Hawaii Calls Orchestra in 1962. In 1928, Edwards had relocated from Oregon to Hawaii where he became an auto salesman. It was during this time he developed a keen ...interest in native Hawaiian musical traditions. In 1935 he became the producer for a radio show which showcased authentic island music, Hawaii Calls. Hawaii Calls debuted on July 3, 1935 and was broadcast for 37 years. Fun Fact: Edwards was the first radio announcer to broadcast the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Burl Ives recorded a modest MOR hit with the song in 1964; Jack Jones enjoyed Top-10 chart success in Australia with a completely lyrically-different rendition titled ‘First Night of the Full Moon’ he recorded in 1964. But, ‘Pearly Shells’ has a very strong association with Hawaiian singer Don Ho who recorded several different versions. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #islandweek #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #ukulelelife #pearlyshells https://youtu.be/avEIAZBAEpo

19.01.2022 Day 67/100 - To the Stone's (Ninebarrow) Ukulele Cover 'To the Stones' is a beautiful song written and performed by Dorset folk duo Ninebarrow and inspired by a Neolithic long-barrow affectionately called ‘The Grey Mare and Her Colts’ which can be found on the ancient landscape to the South Dorset Ridgeway. This long barrow is believed to be associated with the Neolithic period (6000-4500 years ago). This long rectangular mound was a Neolithic burial monument, probably built ...around 5000 years ago and is likely to have been used for generations of a local community who lived close by. ABOUT THE SONG: To the Stones tells of a family taking a young child up to this important stone monument for the first time. 18.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK - DAY 4 DAY 75/100 - Ukulele Lady "Ukulele Lady" is a popular standard, an old evergreen song by Gus Kahn and Richard A. Whiting. Published in 1925, the song was first made famous by Vaughn De Leath.... It has been recorded by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra with vocals by the Southern Fall Colored Quartet on June 3, 1925; Frank Crumit recorded it in 1925; Lee Morse in 1925; Peter Sellers with the Temperance Seven in 1960; Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band in 1965 and Arlo Guthrie on his 1972 album Hobo's Lullaby. Bing Crosby recorded the song for his radio show in 1960 and it was subsequently released on the CD Return to Paradise Islands (2010). My favourite version however was by Bette Midler, who first performed the song live in the 1997 TV special "Diva Las Vegas" as a tribute to her native Hawaii. Midler later recorded the song for her album Bathhouse Betty. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelecover #ukulelelife #ukulelelove #ukulelelady https://youtu.be/oxS3_pT0Deo

18.01.2022 Day 66/100 - I Can See Clearly Now "I Can See Clearly Now" is a song written and originally recorded by Johnny Nash. It was a single from the album of the same name and achieved success in the United States and the United Kingdom when it was released in 1972, reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box charts. It also reached number one in Canada and South Africa. The song has been covered by many artists throughout the years, including a hit version by Le...e Towers in 1982, and another hit version in 1993 by Jimmy Cliff, who re-recorded the song for the motion picture soundtrack of Cool Runnings. After Nash wrote and composed the original version, he recorded it in London with members of the Fabulous Five Inc. and produced it himself. Composed in the key of D major with a I-IV-V chord progression, the song's arrangements and style are both heavily laced with reggae influences. Nash had collaborated with Bob Marley earlier, and his approach to this so g drew strongly from Marley's reggae style. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #ukulelelife https://youtu.be/gk8xhtA-l7A

13.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK - DAY 5 Day 76/100 - Island Style (John Cruz) John Cruz plays many styles of music including acoustic blues and some R&B, but the tunes that resonate with me the most are his tracks that evoke his native Hawaii. Island Style is one such, and it happens to be one that fellow islander, Jack Johnson, is fond of playing live. Johnson and Cruz have played the song as a duet a number of times, and it has graced several CD projects to which Johnson has contribu...ted. Island Style is Cruz’s signature song. It’s from his first album, Acoustic Soul. Cruz’s biography explains that when Acoustic Soul came out in 1996, Island Style made its case as a de facto state anthem. More than 100,000 copies of the CD have sold in Hawaii, which according to U.S. Census Bureau had fewer than 1.3 million residents in 2009. That means Cruz sold one CD for every 13 of the state’s citizens. (The Register-Guard does not pay me to be a statistician here, but you get the idea.) That first album was kind of a big deal for Cruz. Another big deal happened in 2005, when Cruz had a song on a compilation that won Hawaii its first Grammy: Jo Bo’s Night on Slack Key Guitar Volume 2. Cruz has attracted many awards and honors, including being named best singer-songwriter by Hawaii Magazine in 2008. His second album, One of These Days, didn’t come out until 2007, but a news release says it was No. 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart for the Pacific Region. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelelove #ukulelelife #ukulelecover #hawaiianmusic https://youtu.be/epFoJgIcT1A

10.01.2022 ISLAND WEEK - DAY 7 Day 78/100 - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Harold Arlen) "Over the Rainbow" is a ballad composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg. It was written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became Garland's signature song. This version is based on Izzy's version which was recorded for his album Facing Future (1993), where Isr...ael Kamakawiwoole included "Over the Rainbow" in a ukulele medley with "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. Kamakawiwoole called the recording studio at 3 a.m. and was given 15 minutes to arrive and a limited studio time. On arrival, they put up some microphones, did a quick sound check, rolled tape, and the first thing he played was 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' He played and sang, one take, and it was over." Kamakawiwoole's version reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot Digital Tracks chart during the week of January 31, 2004. In the U.S., it was certified Platinum for 1,000,000 downloads sold. As of October 2014 it had sold over 4.2 million digital copies. Kamakawiwoole version of "Over the Rainbow" has been used in commercials, films and television programs, including 50 First Dates, Charmed, Cold Case, ER, Finding Forrester, Horizon, Life on Mars, 9, Meet Joe Black, Scrubs, Snakes on a Plane, Son of the Mask, and the television series South Pacific. The Kamakawiwoole version was sung by the cast of Glee on the season one finale "Journey" and included on Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals, charting at number 30 in the UK, 31 in Canada and Ireland, 42 in Australia, and 43 in the U.S. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #ukulelelife #somewhereovertherainbow https://youtu.be/6J3mRS867Rw

09.01.2022 Day 68/100 - Bear Dance (c. 1500-1600) From Lute to Uke songbook Bear Dance is a traditional European tune, possibly from Flemish origin that uses just 6 notes. This piece sounds lovely on a variety of instruments including fiddle, concertina and mandolin. 07.01.2022 Day 65/100 - Bad Moon Rising (minor key) "Bad Moon Rising" is a song written by John Fogerty and performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was the lead single from their album Green River and was released in April 1969, four months before the album. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 on 28 June 1969 and reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in September 1969 (see 1969 in music). It was CCR's second gold single. Fogerty reportedly wrote "Bad Moon Risi...ng" after watching 'The Devil and Daniel Webster'. Inspired by a scene in the film involving a hurricane, Fogerty claims the song is about "the apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us". The song has been recorded by at least 20 different artists, in styles ranging from folk to reggae to psychedelic rock. #100daysuke2021 #100daysofuke2021 #ccr #ukulelecover #ukulelelove #ukulelelife #badmoonrising https://youtu.be/eRFU--7qBho
