17.01.2022 Thai Dessert - Khanom Chan/ One of the ancient Thai desserts, which Thai ancestors usually made for auspicious ceremonies. In Thai, the word Khanom (Th...ai: ) means dessert, Chan (Thai: ) means layer, also known as Thai jello. It is usually steamed in the complete 9 layer form. The number nine itself has connotations of prosperity in Thai culture (in Thai, 'nine' also sounds like ‘progress’). Khanom Chan therefore represents prosperity in life and promotion in your occupation. One of the best desserts for removing the spiciness from your taste buds, Khanom Chan (Thai Jello) is very easy to spot since it is often bright green, but it can also be a different color depending on what is mixed into it. The jello is made from palm sugar, coconut milk, rice flour, tapioca, tea, and pandan leaves (which is what gives it its color). Khanom Chan is different from regular jello since it is much more creamier and has a rich taste. Khanom Chan is fragrant, subtly sweet and slightly oily from the addition of coconut milk. The texture is smooth yet sticky. Khanom Chan is traditionally made with the pandan leaf but it can also be made with different ingredients. If the color of the jello is brown, that is usually a good indication that coffee was mixed into the jello batter. There are a variety of different flavors, so it usually depends on what the vendor is selling. No matter what color jello of Khanom Chan, one must try Khanom Chan to complete the whole Thai Street Food experience before leaving Thailand. Ingredients in Kanom Chan Tapioca flour Talcum flour Rice flour Mung bean flour Sugar Coconut milk Food color or pandan juice
