24.01.2022 Dry Needling Dry needling is an effective technique for the treatment of muscular pain by relaxing overactive muscles. It involves inserting an acupuncture needle into a trigger point and is typically used to treat the pain associated with injuries or muscular pain. A trigger point is a tender spot in a tight band of muscle causing pain. Let us answer some commonly asked questions about this effective adjunct.... How does dry needling work? There are mechanical and biochemical effects. We know that inserting a needle into trigger points can cause favourable biochemical changes, which assist in reducing muscular tension and pain. This in turn may improve joint and muscular function. What type of problems can be treated with Dry Needling? Dry needling can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems. Such conditions include, but are not limited to: - Headaches (tension-type headaches, jaw pain) - Neck & back pain - Shoulder pain (rotator cuff pathology) - Arm pain - Buttock, groin, hip and leg pain - Knee pain Is the procedure painful? The needles used for dry needling are so fine that most patients do not feel the insertion of the needle. At times a dull ache may be felt in the muscle being treated or into its referral area, which is a desirable reaction. If deemed therapeutic, a local twitch response may be elicited; a very brief (less than a second) painful response. Are the needles sterile? Yes, we only use sterile disposable needles. What side effects can I expect after the treatment? Similar to other physiotherapy treatment techniques, mild soreness is common after the procedure. The soreness is described as muscle soreness over the area treated and into the areas of referred symptoms. Typically, the soreness lasts between a few hours. I am not comfortable with needles. Do I have to have Dry Needling? No. Dry needling does not replace the usual physiotherapy techniques and procedures, it simply is another tool available to help reduce pain symptoms. Before any procedure you are always informed and your consent is mandatory. For further information on dry needling or to book an appointment to get dry needling done please contact us #physiotherapy #dryneedling

20.01.2022 Cervicogenic Headaches OR Headache that is related to the neck (ref APA): Headaches that are secondary to a disorder in one of the top 3 or 4 joints in the neck are commonly called cervicogenic headache. This type of headache is often felt on one side of the head. It is always the same side; unlike migraine, neck headaches do not swap sides. Cervicogenic headache is of mild-to-moderate intensity and can be accompanied by neck pain. Most typically, the pain begins in the neck ...& then spreads to a headache. At Kinesio Physio, our physiotherapist can first undertake a full examination to determine if your headache symptoms fit the pattern for cervicogenic headache, and if there are problems with the joints and muscles, particularly in the upper part of the neck. After diagnosing that headache is related to neck - variety of treatment methods for management can be advised such as - Education & Advise - Manual Therapy - Exercise prescription to strengthen or stretch specific muscles, improve your posture &/or train balance as well as eye-head movement control - Advise for ergonomics at home or work - Home Exercise Programs & strategies to self manage the headaches In cases where headache is more related to tension-type or migraine, management by your GP may be the primary treatment; in these cases, physiotherapy methods such as relaxation therapy or soft tissue therapy may assist in management as part of a multidisciplinary approach. Contact us or book online to get the appropriate advise & management for the headache. See more

20.01.2022 DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness DOMS is often referred to as the pain felt 24-72 hours after a bout of unaccustomed or strenuous exercise. It is thought to be caused by the eccentric part of an exercise (lengthening of the muscle). Most commonly DOMS feels like a dull, aching pain in the affected muscles not the joints. For example, sitting down at your desk after a heavy session of squats, lunges and deadlifts can be a very uncomfortable feeling. As physiotherapists..., we are often asked if it is advisable to continue with the exercises program after suffering from DOMS? We believe RECOVERY is the key after a bout of strenuous exercises so you can manage DOMS. Some examples of these strategies are foam rolling, using massage ball or a recovery massage. As physiotherapists, we can also help develop a safe at-home OR a gym exercise program with a graded increase in intensity that can limit the feelings of DOMS, whilst still achieving your goals. This can be performed by our physiotherapists after an assessment of your specific requirements taking into account any preexisting injuries, current fitness levels and your goals. To book in for a session please call and let us help you achieve your goals, whilst minimising muscle soreness. #physiotherapy #recovery #DOMS See more
