24.01.2022 Pregnancy is a time of plenty of changes for the female body, changes that might bring about some issues for the post-partum woman. Getting back into exercise or doing the physical things you’ve enjoyed doing before, can be tricky but rest easy, help is at hand! And for more video's from the Kinetic Medicine Team, jump over to our website and have a look what you can find. https://kineticmedicine.com.au/videos

24.01.2022 STRESS & THE PELVIC FLOOR Did you know if you are stressed for long periods of time (or even short periods) it can cause your pelvic floor to contract (aka. tighten). If this happens often, you may struggle to relax your pelvic floor. ... This means you may find it harder to insert a tampon or even have sexual intercourse during that time. If your stress levels are high over a long period of time you can also put yourself at risk of developing pelvic pain. Even if you don’t have any of those symptoms But find yourself getting stressed on a regular basis, how about we find one things to do during the week to wind down and relax? i.e. taking a bath, putting some lavender drops on your pillow or even downloading a meditation app and giving that a go!

24.01.2022 You wouldn’t think it but getting expert rehabilitation in Port Stephens can be tricky. When you’ve had a knee or hip replacement, back or shoulder surgery or just stuck in pain, a trip to a specialist or surgeon can add an extra burden of difficulty to the already tough experience. That’s why not having to travel far and wide for therapy and rehabilitation is so important, and it’s a driving force behind why we do what we do in our Salamander Bay practice.

23.01.2022 Rewire your brain The brain can be rewired and under certain conditions, radically rearranged. Some of the best tools needed for rewiring the brain are very simple. All a person needs to change his or her brain is a whole lot of focused and dedicated practice. From learning to control your emotions to - hitting a cricket ball, the core of change involves rewiring he brain. ... While the idea of practice makes perfect is simple, how to practice is more complicated. The brain also involves another rather large white elephant in the room: MOTIVATION. Neuroplasticity takes tremendous amount of work. It does not necessarily involve a long period of time, just a lot of focused effort. But did Ricky Ponting stop practicing batting before his last game? NO. because he wanted to keep being better even though he was one of the best already! You just have to improve a little bit everyday to achieve that continuous growth!

We’ve got new programs starting soon in: - Salamander Bay - Bulahdelah - Forster - Taree - Old Bar - Wingham So if you, or someone you love, is aged over 65yrs - or over 55yrs for those who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander - and are wanting to improve your mental health, reach out and have a chat with us to see how we can help.

21.01.2022 Desmond didn’t think exercise physiology would help, he didn’t think it would be for him. Presenting with lower back pain and symptoms radiating into his hip, thigh and knee, he found he didn’t have the power he needed to get up stairs and keep himself steady. Little did Desmond know that these kind of problems are right up our alley. He’s shown pretty solid progress with each session - improvements in his pain, more freedom to move, he’s starting to feel strong again. All in all he says he’s feeling great and has given us 2 thumbs up

17.01.2022 We can’t all be as well balanced as Brendan! When he walked in to our Taree clinic he had just had some pretty hefty ankle surgery to help him better manage his day to day life. We’re stoked to see him walking without his crutches, making gains and growing in confidence. He is now back to his work and one all-round happy camper.

17.01.2022 It’s smart to ask for help. It’s a good feeling when you know your way out of a problem. But when doing it yourself risks you having to stay sick, sore or suffering, knowing that you need to ask for help is the wisest place you could find yourself in. That’s why, when it comes to using exercise as medicine or therapy, we’ve done the hard yards to earn the know how to show you how to get your health back on track.

17.01.2022 Make time for yourself In what ways do you take care of yourself? well, that's where the tricky part begins. What is self-care? Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. ... Although it's a simple concept in theory, it's something we very often overlook.

16.01.2022 We hope your Christmas has been full of peace and joy, the love of friends and family and cherished memories this Christmas. Wherever you are and however you’ve spent it, Merry Christmas from all of our families to yours.

15.01.2022 Whether you’re new to running, or whether you’ve been stuck at a level you’ve become unsatisfied about, there is a way for you to get more out of your body to reach the level you’ve got your sights set on. Implementing the fundamentals of sport science, human physiology and biomechanics are the concepts that underwrite our everyday practice. Applying these concepts to your running means we can find the strategies you haven’t tried yet to get you moving towards better. So whether you’re trying to pass a fitness test, finally get through ParkRun, or just accomplish that goal you never thought you’d reach, we can help you make a plan that’s just right for you.

13.01.2022 Mental health awareness is really important with the events of 2020 bringing it to the forefront.

12.01.2022 Pain certainly feels, at least initially anyway, like it’s something that should be avoided and that certainly can be the case in at least the initial stages. If you’ve suffered the onset of an acute injury then ensuring that your body has the time and space to settle down and/or heal can be important. Yet bed rest has become something we know, in principle, doesn’t lead to better results. That’s why it’s vitally important to get expert oversight when you become injured or s...uffer the onset of pain, and that the result of this should include at least some idea of what a map of recovery should look like. Yet, health professionals who simply provide the advice to wait until all pain resolves are providing advice that has been found to often lead to impaired recovery and even poorer rates of healing. Our body thrives on stimulus and when we withdraw physical stimulus that keeps our systems regulated appropriately towards tolerating stress we do it a disservice.

12.01.2022 5 Helpful Mental Health Strategies 1. STOP technique Stop what you’re doing Take a few deep breaths... Observe your experience without judgement - thoughts, emotions, posture, body Proceed with something that will help you in the moment - cup of tea, talking to a friend, take a bath, etc. 2. Meditation Meditation is a practice that uses mindfulness to focus on something in particular. Meditation can be used in the present moment by focusing on our breathing, our surroundings or even something we want to attract into our life such as openness. Sometimes thoughts may enter our minds that are unrelated to what we are focusing on and that is ok. Try picturing these thoughts on clouds that float by, leaving as quickly as they came. 3. Sleep hygiene Sleep is an important process which allows the body to restore and recharge. Having good sleep hygiene can make a big difference in sleep quality. Some tips for good sleep hygiene include: - Minimise stimulants like caffeine, alcohol and tobacco before bed - Create a regular night routine - Try waking and sleeping at the same time each day - Avoid using screens 23 hours before bed 4. Movement There are so many benefits to moving your body, from reducing stress, releasing endorphins (aka happy chemicals), increasing confidence in regards to movement, improving sleep, decreasing inflammation as well as strengthening and building up muscles. Try to move your body for at least 30 minutes a day doing something you enjoy - Pilates, walking, swimming, weightlifting, yoga are just a few examples. 5. Gratitude rampage Gratitude has been proven to reduce stress, increase happiness and rewire connections in the brain to create new pathways. A gratitude rampage is where we stop, set a timer for >2 minutes and list all the things we are grateful for - from the big things like family to small things like being able to have a coffee.

10.01.2022 We often see people who have been told things about their backs that means they worry about just how safe they might be. The reality is that your back is capable of being stronger than you think. In a fascinating study, participants with back pain who were shown images of their own backs with more defined musculature so as to convey the notion that their own back was stronger, had less pain.... If you want to learn how it’s possible for your back to feel stronger, we’re the kind of people who are committed to showing you how.

09.01.2022 Jimbo has always been a hard worker, about ten years ago he hurt his back at work, his employer and the insurer supported his rehabilitation. Jimbo undertook various medical appointments that focused on diagnosing and treating his pain, some approaches were successful and some were not. About 12 weeks ago Jimbo had his first appointment at Kinetic Medicine, one of the first things the Exercise Physiologist asked him was, what are your goals?... This was something new for Jimbo, he had never been asked this question before. His response was that he wanted to get, back to work. With a clear goal was established, Jimbo and his Exercise Physiologist collaborated on exercises that supported the physical requirements for him to work, strategies that helped him manage his back and coaching around the nature of his pain. Just because it sounds simple, doesn’t mean it’s easy though. Jimbo committed to doing the work and in time found that his pain was reduced. Also Jimbo started his new job last week.

09.01.2022 Lyn was first referred to Kinetic Medicine back in March. After experiencing multiple falls in her home and noticed a lack of confidence in her walking ability. Lyn wasn’t doing activities such as gardening, household chores or shopping anymore - she was worried about falling and it was really weighing heavily upon her. Upon visiting Lyn in her home, a movement-based plan was put in place to help her increase her lower limb strength, balance and coordination. Lyn was particul...arly diligent, even completing a couple of exercises each time she was waiting for the kettle to boil. After 16 weeks, Lyn has dramatically improved her balance and walking tolerance, feeling confident to go for small walks around her block and spend time in her garden. Lyn feels safe living at home on her own and has even reduced the amount of home care she receives.

08.01.2022 What about our Seniors? All of us are finding the current times challenging in one way or another. People have lost their jobs and have had their future plans interrupted or even ruined. Thankfully, there’s been a lot of attention paid to mental health and psychological wellbeing. It’s encouraging to see that people are open to discussing how they are feeling, and plenty of us are willing to lend a listening ear. Our Seniors, though, require a special consideration. They’re the portion of our population who face the most challenges in adopting new technology being used to overcome our current obstacles. They’re the ones we’re also trying to protect most due to their vulnerability.

08.01.2022 Race car drivers have a saying - never look at the wall. What they mean is, when you’re hurtling along, you will move to where you attention is. And the wall is no place a race car driver wants to end up. In many ways, that’s a metaphor for life. If we keep looking at the things we want to avoid instead of the things we want to move towards we run the risk of continuing to find ourselves frustrated by not achieving the ends we have in mind. ... We’re all for helping you find your way to the things you want. Rather than just pain relief, we need to look at what pain has stopped us from doing and find our way back to things that mean the most to us.

06.01.2022 Heads up Corowa Kinetic Community - we’ve moved! 06.01.2022 FLASHBACK! In looking back through the Kinetic Facebook archives for something poignant to share we found this little gem that’s as true now as it was then and has a lot to do with why Kinetic Medicine exists. There’s only so long you can stay fed up about a problem before you either have to quit complaining and either roll over or get your hands dirty, and so we’ve spent the last 5 years toiling at taking regional healthcare to the next level and we’re just getting started

05.01.2022 Any guesses where this is

02.01.2022 Fact Vs Fiction Exercise can help to both prevent and manage Type 2 Diabetes FACT!!... For a person with diabetes, exercise helps to: - make insulin work effectively - maintain a healthy weight - lower your blood pressure - reduce your risk of heart disease If you are living with diabetes, ask an Accredited Exercise Physiologist to prescribe an exercise program individualised to you.

02.01.2022 Sometimes it can be powerful to ask ourselves the tough question of ‘have we been wrong about this?’ Whether it’s about a decision that we’ve made in the past or one we keep on making, it can be powerful to ask the boldest of questions of self reflection. Doing so, though, in a way that doesn’t lead us to shame, guilt or regret is somewhat of an art. Being objective doesn’t come as easy to some as it does to others because the notion of ‘failure’ can have such a powerful and lasting impact. This notion of ‘failure’ either considering our actions or even ourselves in our entirety as either living up to a standard or falling short often does more harm than good and as a result the management of this concept is emerging as a secret weapon in helping people do things of significant.

14.12.2021 At some point most of us feel like we’ve probably left schoolyard games like handball behind us, but believe it or not we’re not slacking off here Balance is a crucial skill to preserve as we age, and improving our ability to balance is pretty complicated. Balance is maintained by feedback loops within our nervous system, and by training it under dynamic and constantly changing loads we can actually improve - no matter what age you get to ... Believe it or not, we regularly see people get back their ability to walk - even sometimes with only very limited assistance. It’s no miracle, it’s the power of science in action - with just a little bit of support and know how

05.12.2021 Plenty of people don’t always understand what we do, in part because the idea of ‘exercise’ can have different connotations for different people. Whilst it’s true that the right kind of movement, designed just for you is a big part of what you can see happen in our clinics, it’s just one side of what we do. Sitting with you long enough to get an understanding of what’s actually going on is such an important element of our process. The better we can understand, the better we can o help you to understand it too. When everything makes sense, we all do better.

01.12.2021 Telehealth has become a mainstream part of life for some of us in the last 2 years. But aside from Covid precautions, the broader acceptance of Telehealth has meant more and more people now have access to care that helps them actually get better. From the person going through treatment for cancer who needs our exercise oncology services but is so fatigued they can’t drive, to the person living with chronic fatigue syndrome who finds it hard to leave their bed - Telehealth me...ans our next clinic can be wherever you are. Oh, and is anyone else tired watching this!?

21.11.2021 It’s been 3 years today since we officially opened our Taree Headquarters. Over the last 3 years, this place has been a place of healing and empowerment, as well as a launching pad that has seen us spread far and wide. Believe it or not, we’re not done yet.

14.11.2021 Don’t forget that our FREE Mental Health program for Older Adults is live and running across our Mid Coast and Hunter clinics. If you’re over 65 and have concerns about your mental health then we would love to help you. Contact us or head to www.kineticmedicine.com.au/heal-program for more information

29.10.2021 Helping people is in our DNA, and sometimes we get the chance to be able to go the distance with a few people - through the ups and downs - to see incredibly meaningful change. People like Geoff or Deborah here are just 2 of our many favourites and it’s an honour to play some small part in helping people live life to the full.

09.10.2021 In looking back over the last 6 years, the face of Kinetic Medicine has been our clinical team. We’ve been blessed to have the help of some specially talented people - and to have had a little fun along the way.

20.09.2021 This week coming marks the end of October (can you believe it? ) meaning another birthday for Kinetic Medicine - can you believe we’ve been at this for 6 years now? Over the next few days we want to celebrate a few things and people because, if not for our people, we wouldn’t be where we are today - making a difference in the communities we’re a part of. So our first special person to thank is the wonderful, ever patient Sephora - tomorrow marks 4 years of Kinetic love for ...our Seph Seph was one of the first to join our team and is our equal longest service team member, gracing the phones and clinic admin since before we even had an office! We love you Seph and everything you do and can’t express our gratitude enough!

09.09.2021 Sometimes, from the outside, things look simple. Something as familiar as exercise can very often be assumed as being straight forward enough that anyone could do it. It’s why we see a lot of ‘cookie cutter’ approaches taken, with the assumption being that the same thing should work for everyone. And whilst anyone can use exercise as medicine, making it actually work for you when it counts - when you’re health is at stake - can sometimes require a fair bit of work. The reality is, there is no one quite like you. Your pretty special! That’s why you need someone on your side who’ll listen, who will help you understand. We’ll help you through the ups and downs in a way that will give you the power to make those precious meaningful steps to feeling like yourself again.
