Hope your all staying safe and healthy and enjoying your Easter weekend as much as you can in these strange times.

13.01.2022 Great news for the Barkly region with the Australian Government announcing it will contribute $120 million towards the upgrade of the Carpentaria Highway. Upgra...des include strengthening and widening, flood immunity works and road safety improvements. This will support industry and business by providing better freight links, and enhance social equity by providing a more efficient, safe and reliable means for Territorians to access key essential services such as education, health and time-critical emergency services. Specific packages of works will be delivered in stages based on ongoing investigations, assessments and analysis of road conditions and vehicle accident data, and community consultations. This project is expected to start mid 2022 and be finished by mid 2026. - Steven Edgington

11.01.2022 ANZAC Day done a little different here this year, however we still did it on the banks of the Mcarthur river! At the going down of the sun, and in the morning. We will remember them.

11.01.2022 It seems the last of the monsoon just doesn’t quite want to let go. The week ahead looks as though we may get a few storms rolling through but the dry season is definitely on its way with easterly winds starting to turn up. The Barra have been playing the game lately with a bit of run off still happening thanks to localised storms topping up creeks in land. We are very excited for what looks to be a great season all round.

30.12.2021 Well it is that time of year again. Still a long way off but we may see our first cyclone of the year. If you like to have a more in depth look at different modelling and the driving forces behind what cyclones here may do then you should consider subscribing to Oz Cyclone Chasers. They do a great job explaining how predictions work and why in easy to understand videos.

10.12.2021 Dear Chief Minister, You have had 10 months to rollout the COVID vaccine but with just two weeks until Christmas you’ve decided to punish the people of the Bar...kly because of your government’s incompetence. A fully vaccinated resident from any part of the Barkly or, in fact, a fully vaccinated resident living outside of Darwin, Katherine or Alice Springs who returns to the Northern Territory from interstate from 20 December 2021 must comply with the PCR testing requirements but then remain in what you describe as a high vaccinated area for 14 days. So this new rule, under your dictatorship, means that any fully vaccinated person including Northern Territory residents entering the Northern Territory from 20 December 2021 will not be able to visit their family or visit any place outside of Alice Springs, Katherine or Darwin for 14 days. If Santa Claus enters the Northern Territory after 20 December not one child living outside of Alice Springs, Darwin or Katherine will receive a Christmas present this year I’ve never seen anything so disgusting in all my life! You are a disgrace and should be ashamed of yourself! Will you be visiting every child and every family to explain how you made such an appalling decision? What do you say to small business, the tourism sector, pastoralists, our dedicated frontline workers like police, health and education etc, and the average person on the street who just want to have a break, travel interstate to see their family, and enjoy the festive season? If a fully vaccinated Barkly resident travels by vehicle to Queensland for Christmas, the only way they can return home is to drive past their front door and continue on to Alice Springs, Katherine or Darwin and spend 14 days there, at their cost! This will add around $5000 to the cost of a family holiday! Are you serious? And, while this is happening, every other person in the Northern Territory whether fully vaccinated or unvaccinated can travel in and out of Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine any time of the day or night, every day of the week potentially carrying COVID back into low vaccinated areas. You appear to be saying that Tennant Creek is a low vaccinated area but you’re not even being open and honest by telling us what our vaccination rate actually is. How can people in Tennant Creek address this while you are deliberately withholding this information? While you and your government have been busy falsely accusing a number of Territorians of being "anti-vaxxers" including me, the reality is you are trying to hide your failure to rollout the COVID vaccine in a number of remote communities. You should be helping, not hindering the COVID vaccine rollout! Your government had the opportunity but failed to get on the front foot and show some leadership back in March this year by developing and implementing a well-resourced multi-agency community engagement plan in remote communities to ensure all vulnerable residents were well informed, supported and encouraged to access the COVID vaccine. Here’s a snapshot of your government’s performance responding to the COVID pandemic including here in the Barkly electorate: in the middle of 2020 your government scrapped the Patient Assistance Travel Scheme (PATS) position, the Purchasing Officer and Business Manager positions at the Tennant Creek Hospital. in March 2021, the COVID vaccine rollout for remote communities commenced without a documented plan to ensure all vulnerable residents were well informed, supported and encouraged to access the COVID vaccine. in April 2021, you hindered the COVID vaccine rollout in the Barkly by slashing two health positions at the Wutunugurra (Epenarra) Health Clinic placing more pressure on staff at Canteen Creek who are still being forced to leave their community twice per week to manage the delivery of health services in Epenarra. in May, you announced Budget 2021-2022 stating your government was focused on staying safe from the virus we’re backing the frontline health response, keeping Howard Springs open and continuing the vaccine rollout but, at the same time, stripped around $4 million from the Remote Primary Health Care budget. in June, two of your Ministers launched a revised Remote Engagement and Coordination Strategy in Tennant Creek but ignored the need to actually use it to develop a well-resourced multi-agency community engagement plan to support the COVID vaccine rollout. you have failed to maintain appropriate staffing levels at a number of remote health clinics resulting in reduced health services and engagement with residents at Tara, Wilora and Epenarra and other communities. The outcome of your chaotic and dysfunctional approach to rolling out the vaccine is that since March 2021, you have only provided COVID double vaccinations to 17% of the population at Epenarra, 15% at Alpurrurulam, 22% at Canteen Creek, 25% at Ali Curung, 29% at Wilora, 30% at Tara, 50% at Elliott, and 65% at Ti Tree. We still do not know what the actual vaccination rate is for Tennant Creek because you refuse to tell us! How the hell can your government expect to increase vaccination rates in remote areas without a plan, withholding vaccination rates and while reducing health services at the same time? Under the Gunner Government’s Working Together Aboriginal Affairs Strategy, one of the objectives is to improve access to quality, acceptable and culturally responsive health services! I urge you to review your latest decision that will commence on 20 December 2021 so that fully vaccinated residents of the Barkly and the Northern Territory can enjoy Christmas and not suffer because of your government’s failure to manage the COVID vaccine rollout. The people of the Barkly and throughout the Northern Territory look forward to hearing from you soon. Steve Edgington MLA, Member for Barkly

01.10.2021 Over the last few weeks the King Ash Bay Fishing Club Inc has received over 170 written complaints about the condition of King Ash Bay Boat Ramp. Yesterday, I m...et with the President of the King Ash Bay Fishing Club, Ashley Garner to discuss the complaints which highlight the unsafe conditions caused by the recent wet season where sand and silt from upstream has been deposited both on the boat ramp and directly off the end of the ramp. One of the greatest concerns is that people are now having to wade into the water to launch and retrieve vessels where a large crocodile has been spotted on many occasions in recent weeks. At low tide it is almost impossible to launch larger vessels at all which is a major concern particularly if there is an emergency somewhere on the river. Even when on the river, it is extremely difficult and unsafe for recreational and commercial fisherman to navigate the McArthur River, its adjacent creeks, channels and delta system due to the serious lack of channel markers both in the rivers, creeks and rock-bars. The written complaints have been presented to the Minister for Infrastructure, Eva Lawler and I ask that she take urgent action to remove the sand and silt deposited directly off the end of the boat ramp, install new channel markers and develop a regular maintenance program for the King Ash Bay Boat Ramp to ensure the safety of our local people and our visitors.
