23.01.2022 Wet Wipes Wednesday: Anti-bacterial wipes are being used in much larger volumes this year to help stop the spread of COVID. But, theyre another item we need to... dispose of thoughtfully to avoid harm to our health and our environment. Wet wipes must be thrown in the general waste bin. Just like tissues, they cant be recycled and definitely not flushed down the toilet. According to Sydney Water, even wet wipes marketed as flushable can create big problems with water management. 'Flushable' wet wipes may clear your toilet bowl; however, they do not break down quickly enough for our wastewater system. This can lead to blockages and sewage overflows into customer's homes and creeks. Alternative: opt for hand sanitiser if out and about. And, try washable cloth wipes with anti-bacterial gels or sprays when at home. It also improves the durability of our roads and is more cost effective for Council.
