19.01.2022 The Kingborough Council is inviting public submissions on a dedicated greyhound exercise area at its Kingston View Drive Dog Park. Acting Kingborough Mayor, Jo Westwood said the establishment of a specific area for greyhounds would give their owners the freedom of exercising their dogs off-lead. In Tasmania greyhounds are restricted to exercising on a lead in a public space as part of the Tasmanian Government’s Dog Control Act 2000.... The proposed space at the Kingston View Drive dog exercise area is approximately 51 metres long by 49 metres wide (see photo). It would be fenced, with a maintenance gate and barriers within the space to break line of sight and restrict speed. Council is calling for public submissions on the new area from 21st April 2021 to Friday 14th May 2021. Anyone wishing to make a submission can do so by emailing [email protected] or writing to Kingborough Council, Civic Centre, 15 Channel Hwy, Kingston, 7050. 17.01.2022 We are looking at a new approach to maintain the tree cover of the much-loved gum trees behind Taroona beach. The group of blue gums provide shade and protection and are a beautiful backdrop to the foreshore and provide habitat and food for wildlife. However, routine assessments have revealed the trees are showing signs of stress and as they naturally move towards the end of their lifespan, changes may lead to branch failures. To enable the retention of the trees for as long... as possible and still ensuring public safety, we have come up with an approach to maintain the tree cover into the future. You will notice some changes in the park such as landscaping, replacement blue gums planting, and the relocation of some seats and tables. Visit our website to find out more at https://www.kingborough.tas.gov.au//new-approach-to-maint/ #KCworks #PublicSpaces #Taroona

16.01.2022 Fuel Break Slashing Council’s annual fuel break slashing program has started and we have received calls from residents concerned about the height of vegetation on the fuel breaks. The slashing program is based on the dryness or curing of the grass, not on the height. It needs to be carefully timed to achieve the best outcome to reduce bushfire risk. Cutting too early, particularly in high growth years like this one, may mean that more and drier fuel is available to burn in th...e peak of the bushfire season. We will be monitoring the breaks and a second cut will be planned during summer, depending on the growth, and curing of the fuel on the breaks. Please help us by keeping fuel breaks clear of unwanted household vegetation such as grass clippings or wood storage. #KCworks #BushfireReady

14.01.2022 DOG POO ALERT! Water quality on our beaches has been a top priority for us over the past few years. We have made a significant effort to investigate, assess, and rectify stormwater and sewerage issues in partnership with TasWater. However, we also need the assistance of the community to help keep our stormwater systems and waterways clean from waste. Council’s Stormwater Investigations Officer has today found a large deposit of dog poo in a stormwater drain on Gourlay ...Street in Blackmans Bay, which appears to have been deliberately dumped. There are four very good reasons to pick up your dog’s poo: 1 Dog poo is high in nitrogen and phosphorus and can be harmful if not composted properly. 2 It carries bacteria and parasites. These can be harmful to humans and spread disease to other dogs. 3 A common misconception is that dog waste will quickly break down or wash away. This isn’t true. Dog waste can take as long as a year to naturally break down. 4 It can be REALLY smelly. Particularly if you, or a friend, treads in it and doesn’t realise it until later... Please help us keep our water clean and do the right thing with your pets' poo Visit Council’s Home Composting webpage for tips and information on how to compost your pets’ poo. kingborough.tas.gov.au/home-composting #DogDooDoo #BeachWatch #StormwaterSolutions

08.01.2022 IMPORTANT HAZARD WARNING CHANGES Hazard icons across the country have a new look. The new Australian Warning System introduces several changes to the way the community will be notified about hazards.... The first stage of the changes to the Australian Warning System for bushfires in Tasmania today are being rolled out today. The changes will include the way bushfire warnings are displayed on the Tasmania Fire Service website. From today, consistent colours will be used for: Advice (yellow), Watch and Act (orange), and Emergency Warning (red). The icon shapes will also change on maps from diamonds to triangles. While the colours and icons change, the meanings of the levels do not change. The changes are designed to bring consistency to the way warnings are displayed across Australia. Over time more states will use the new colours and icons and they will be used for other hazards like floods and storms. Further changes will occur in Tasmania in 2021, including enhancements to our warning messages. The Australian Warnings System is based on community research and good practice, in terms of what communities recognise and what gets people to take action during an emergency. #bushfireready #EmergencyWarnings

07.01.2022 Along with our partners, NRM South, CSIRO, and recreational fishing groups OzFish and TARFish, we are excited to hear that a grant application to roll-out seagrass friendly moorings in North West Bay was successful. The Australian Government’s Fish Habitat Restoration Program funding will contribute a total of $300k to the project which focuses on the installation of environmentally friendly mooring systems in North West Bay to help restore seagrass communities and associat...ed fish populations. It is hoped that as a result of this project, these new moorings will become more widely used across the region. Council was able to provide funding for the project thanks to the Kingborough Environmental Fund, which has been receiving financial offsets for the loss of important biodiversity values associated with development. The two photos show scars in seagrass at Margate by traditional moorings, and also a concept diagram for the seagrass friendly mooring.
