22.01.2022 Mental illness remains the most stigmatised in the workplace. Employers frequently state they would not employ someone with a known mental disorder and employees will not risk disclosing any mental challenges. A responsible workplace should make every effort to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking and support. Mental Health First Aid can help reduce workplace stigma and train staff on how to deal with mental health in the workplace. 21.01.2022 Aboriginal Mental Health in the Workplace Mental health can be adversely affected by exposure to a range of hazards or factors in the workplace, including, for example: * high job demand * low job demand... * poor support * poor workplace relationships * low role clarity * poor organisational change management * poor organisational justice * poor environmental conditions * remote or isolated work, and * violent or traumatic events. Exposure to these hazards can lead to work-related stress. When stress is very high and or prolonged it can in turn lead to work-related psychological or physical injury. For example, work-related stress may lead to depression and anxiety in the long term. Work-related stress has been linked with high levels of: * unplanned absences including sick leave * staff turnover * withdrawal and presenteeism, and * poor work and poor product quality. Mental Health First Aide training is one intervention strategy that organisations can take up to remove the stigma and contribute to reducing these hazards. 19.01.2022 "I have always had stuff going on in my head but had never seen it as a mental illness. I realised things werent right when it all built up and pushed me over.... I didnt have much family support at the time, limited contact with friends, and a complete lack of sleep. My mind was going nuts, thinking and over-thinking things. I even experienced hallucinations and delusions. My first hospitalisation was my turning point. I realised Id had been experiencing both manic and depressive episodes. At 42, I was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. When I was first diagnosed I was pretty embarrassed. Friends rejected me and I just thought of it as a life sentence. In the early stages, there were peaks and troughs in my medication and recovery. However, after a few times in hospital, I found my triggers and knew what to do. Being able to recognise my symptoms really helped to rebuild my confidence. For me, staying well involves balance. A healthy social life is important, as well as doing fun things. I keep in contact with my family and get a lot of satisfaction from helping others at my church. My role as a presenter is important as it creates awareness around mental health problems. Im very passionate about connecting with people to get them the help they need. I no longer feel like my diagnosis is a life sentence. Being a community presenter enables me to provide insights to the friends and family of people experiencing mental health problems, as well as encourage people to follow through with their treatment and medication. I may have bipolar disorder, but it doesnt have me."

10.01.2022 Natural disasters and extreme weather events can have a big impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of those affected, but help is available. Feeling distressed or overwhelmed is normal following a natural disaster, but there are services available to help you cope, and things you can do to make recovery easier, Rural Adversity Mental Health Program Coordinator, Steve Carrigg said. Its important to reach out for help and support if needed.... Spend time with family and friends Try to get back into a routine as soon as possible, but dont push yourself too hard. Take time out, but dont isolate yourself Accept help and support when it is offered. Stress of experiencing a bushfire can leave people at a higher risk of developing depression or anxiety, even if they are not directly dealing with loss of property and/or possessions. If you require immediate support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. For children under 12 years, call the Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800. In an emergency, please call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
