I don’t normally share things like this as I am a quiet achiever but my kids have made me post it. 20.01.2022 Wow! Where has the time gone. My little eco warrior turned 9 today. For those who have cruised with Isaac on board know exactly what a passionate little man he is. He loves his birds, is passionate about the health of our environment and river and is full of useful and sometimes not so useful facts and information. He carries his not so small bird book (which Bill gave him many years ago) everywhere whilst on the cruise and his binoculars are always around his neck. Koki and his parents joined our cruise today and it was such a delight having him on board. It was his first boat cruise in his 8 years of life and he took it very well, relaxing, snoozing, meeting the other passengers, spotting koalas and taking in the sights as we cruised along. 14.01.2022 Well what wonderful news regional Victoria received yesterday allowing us to move forward another step in Dans grand roadmap. I am so happy for all the businesses that are able to reopen and start operating once again if not fully but partially. For all those in metropolitan Melbourne my thoughts are with you. Keep going you can beat this . I have received calls today asking if we are back cruising as of tomorrow. No! Sorry! We have not operated since March 23rd an...d due to the NSW/Victorian border still being closed we are still sitting high and dry. Due to border permits required by our passengers to travel interstate (being on the Murray) we are still unable to operate. It’s been a tough year financially I won’t lie. As a self employed sole trader who works for myself and by myself I have missed out on all government funding and handouts for businesses. It’s seems small attractions like us and self employed sole traders are not worthy for help or recognised by our governments. I have learnt during this time though that simple things can be the best and that family and friends far and wide are essential to help lift your spirits. My kids are hanging for the day that an ice cream in a cone falls within the budget. We can’t wait to get back out onto the water and show off this beautiful part of the river. As of Monday the 23rd of November (eight months to the date that we had to stop cruising due to COVID) we will be up and out on the water again exploring this beautiful river and forest. 06.01.2022 We have had a lot of people ringing us and asking about current rules when it comes to launching a vessel like a boat, kayak or canoe from the Victorian side into the Murray River at the moment as they want to go fishing. When the New South Wales borders closed on Wednesday 8th people who are currently in Victoria and who intend to enter NSW waters like the Murray River with a vessel must have a border permit. As we know NSW waters are considered to commence from the hi...gh water mark situated on the Victorian side of the Murray River. That means that all of our would be passengers would have to apply for a permit to cruise. Another huge and frustrating setback for us and for other tourism operators but necessary to help stop the spread of this terrible virus. Please note NSW Police are patrolling the area and enforcing border entry requirements, similar to road travel into NSW. We don’t know this individual or family but Brenton, who has an intellectual disability, loves receiving mail and checks the PO Box with his mother everyday. Brenton has been struggling to understand why he couldn’t go out for his usual activities during COVID-19 lockdown. His sister Tanya, who lives in Melbourne unfortunately can not join him for his 33rd birthday on July 22 due to current corona restricti...ons. 05.01.2022 I always have a little chuckle to myself after explaining and helping my passengers find difficult birds like tawny frogmouths. Once one passenger has found it they all start helping each other and the descriptions that come out are hilarious. Brown tree, green leaves, wobbly trunk, grey blob, to the right, to the left, behind the branch with all the leaves gathered together, just in front of the sun and just above the no exit sign. Some even take photos and show others ...in hope they can find the correct tree. In the end people are looking on the wrong side of the boat, looking for frogs and not birds and I think some just pretend they have found them. Eventually I interrupt my way back in and explain again so everyone can finally find them . 05.01.2022 It’s been a while since I last checked in. We have had a lot of people ringing and asking if we are back up and cruising especially for this coming weekend. Unfortunately the answer is no. As much as I would love to be out on the water we are still sitting high and dry and playing the waiting game. At the moment commercial vessels like mine can only carry one customer per four square metres. After measuring my boat numerous times, getting other people to measure my boa...t numerous times, measuring sideways, diagonally, forwards, backwards and even upside down with the size of my vessel at the moment we can only legally carry one passenger plus myself. A big blow for a vessel that carries thirty people. I don’t have the privilege of rooms I can segment off or even an upstairs or downstairs area. I don’t offer meals or drinks and I can’t offer different seating times with time restrictions. I am simply a small eco cruise that offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography and allowing my passengers to relax and take in the fresh air. It’s been an extremely challenging and exhausting seven months mentally and at times I feel I am letting my potential passengers down especially as I sit back and watch other businesses and larger boats being able to open or depart. Hopefully restrictions will be altered soon and our borders reopened both internationally and locally so I can once again show off this amazing place that seven months ago I called my office. 05.01.2022 A Sunday well spent brings a week of content. When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem begins to resemble a nail so I gave my master 8 year old my drill and after a little practice he finally got the hang of it and our maintenance flew along. 03.01.2022 There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to colour with a dry marker. Frustration has really set in. Come on Victoria it takes nothing to join the crowd. It takes everything to stand alone. As a state we seem to be going backwards with COVID cases. As other states are lifting restrictions we are again introducing them. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought travel to a standstill both international and regional causing massive job and revenue losses. We in the tourism... industry are all wondering will there be light at the end of the tunnel In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Many tourism operators have shut doors for good and my heart goes out to them. 03.01.2022 All wetlands great and small, permanent and ephemeral are important. One small wetland can provide habitat for a huge number and variety of creatures. We should protect all remnant wetlands, from Ramsar sites to ephemeral marshes. Today is World Wetlands Day and as an ecotourism operator I love sharing this day with my passengers. World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on the 2nd of February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention... on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on the 2nd February 1971 (bit before my time ). Since 1997, World Wetlands Day has been used to: raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits; and promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands. Throughout 2021 we are celebrating 50 years of the Convention. That is exciting and impressive. The 2021 theme is ‘Wetlands and Water’. This highlights the role wetlands play in: clean water water supply ecosystem resilience sustainable livelihoods and jobs biodiversity conservation storm protection carbon storage climate change adaptation health and well-being tourism and recreation I am hoping like my passengers did today that some of you joined in on this special day by attending a seminar or festival, or even helped with a revegetation project. With minor flooding the reflections were amazing and I got to share the experience with not only my passengers but guests who are staying on the Emmylou for three nights with Murray River Paddlesteamers. Koalas, snakes, kangaroos, emus, nankeen night herons and spoonbills stole the show whilst the reed warbles and sacred kingfishers sang in the background keeping us company as we cruised along. 02.01.2022 A huge shout out to our passengers today who braved the warm conditions out on the water. We managed to catch a beautiful breeze as we came downstream and the songs of the birds also made it very relaxing for all. Tawny frogmouth’s, azure kingfisher’s and nankeen night herons all posed well for the cameras. Another perfect day for cruising. 01.01.2022 We have featured on the television for four weeks running now. My kids have been very excited seeing my face on the television. Even though we aren’t out cruising the river and taking in the sights of the forest it’s great to see programs like What’s Up Down Under still supporting us and encouraging people to come back and experience the Murray on one of our cruises when all this is over.
