04.01.2022 I know judges always say it was difficult to pick a winner, but this was truly the case this time around. Our first problem was making sure we didn’t give all f...our prizes to the Blaikie family! They all contributed photos we really liked. The winning image is Terrence Blaikie’s photo of the four ibis on the branch overlooking the late afternoon waterfront. It’s such a ‘Coochiemudlo’ scene. It won because we felt it was the most immediately striking entry, and the stark outlines, contrasting against the soft light and tranquil water made for such an evocative composition. Charlee Blaikie’s shot of the statue outside Amnya Gardens is so good in every way that it was a real challenge chosing between this one and TJ’s. The angle captures the graceful water-carrier as if she’s one of those figureheads on the prow of a sailing ship, and the framing effect of the branches and leaves composes the image so well. The time and effort Marguerite James put into her photos was best shown we thought in the one taken on Norfolk beach looking out towards Stradbroke. It creates a mood so well and is a reminder of the value of putting a foreground, mid-ground, and background in landscape shots. Andrew Syme achieved the difficult goal of capturing our market among the trees, with balanced splashes of colour from both, and an eyecatching interplay of light on the sand and market stalls. Congratulations to TJ and the three runners-up! I’ve added in a couple of highly commended images. The colorful snap Michael des David made of the stacked kayaks near the barge ramp, and the quirky beach burial (complete with shovel) that Julia Mahoney captured. If the 4 winners would send me the original full size image file out of their phones, I’ll make a start on the printing. I have PM’d you all with my email address. Thanks to everyone who took part. Maybe we should do it again sometime?
