14.01.2022 By now you should have all received a King Island Radio membership form. We received a number of calls, where we were asked "What's the benefit of being a member". The one and only benefit is to keep the station on air. We have been on air now for 5.5 years and love to keep it like that. We rely completely on grants, sponsors and you, our listeners. Our minimum costs to run the station sits at $10,000 per annum, which only covers our licenses and insurances. Financially, fortunately, we are in a healthy position right now. But... we will always need support. So, your membership is important to us.

29.12.2021 Rescue plan for King Island Tourism? We have been informed by his office that Premier Gutwein will hold a press conference this afternoon at 3.30 pm. Will King Island receive news about support for our tourism industry and businesses in general? On the 6th of January Public Health put out the advice that people should only travel to King Island when essential, whilst the rest of Tasmanian travel was ok. Did Public Health realise the damage this could bring to a small island? ...Some of our businesses have suffered losses in the last week of up to $200,000, due to cancellations. This is just an example: "Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation and Tasmanian Department of Health advice to defer non-essential travel to King Island, the SGTSG (Geological Society of Australia) organising committee has decided to postpone the field meeting until Tues 22nd-Thurs 24th November 2022. The uncertainty around the COVID-19 situation makes planning for a February event extremely difficult, particularly with respect to shared accommodation, conference dinners and group transport on the island. We apologise if this causes any major inconvenience and hope to see you all on King Island in November. We will open abstract submissions and medal nominations again and will be in touch about new timelines through updates to our website". See more
19.12.2021 When you're going to pick up a rapid antigen test in the next few days, please wear a mask when you get to the pick up point. Just to protect our great SES volunteers who will hand out the tests. Stay safe!
08.12.2021 12 January 2021 Dr Mark Veitch, Director of Public Health King Island COVID-19 update Public Health Services has confirmed 115 cases of COVID-19 connected to the outbreak on King Island. The rate of cases occurring has decreased. Anyone planning a trip to King Island needs to be aware that cases of COVID-19 will continue to occur on the island, as they will elsewhere in Tasmania and on mainland Australia.... PHS no longer recommends limiting travel to King Island but reminds visitors to take appropriate preventive measures in this time of increased COVID-19 risk. Anyone travelling to King Island should wear a mask when indoors other than in private residences, maintain social distancing measures, and practise good hand hygiene. Anyone experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms, regardless of how mild they are, should get a rapid antigen test and test for COVID-19. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 must isolate immediately and advise household contacts to quarantine. The Department of Health has provided several thousand rapid antigen test kits to King Island to assist with testing. See more
22.11.2021 Press Release - Anita Dow MP Labor Member for Braddon King Island businesses in urgent need of support Businesses on King Island are in need of urgent financial support with the public health direction advising people not to travel to the island having disastrous consequences. Labor Member for Braddon Anita Dow said King Island had been hit particularly hard as a result of COVID and faced a long road to recovery.... COVID cases right across the state are rising and this is having an impact on all businesses, Ms Dow said. King Island has been uniquely impacted with public health telling people to steer clear unless it is absolutely necessary to travel there. This has placed incredible pressure on tourism businesses on the island, with many facing mass cancellations. The government need to urgently support the island to get through this current challenge. It’s all well and good to say a support package is coming but businesses need support and they need it now. See more
