22.01.2022 King island RSL Sub Branch was honoured with a visit from Mr Doug Baird this week, representing Corporal Cameron Baird MG VC, the Baird Family, and Cam's Cause. We are truly thankful for his inspiring story and the great cause he represents.

22.01.2022 Hey Brother - Official Music Video We think 'Hey Brother' is the most important song we have released to date. It is a song directly inspired by those who've s...erved our country. Through touring Australia in 2015 as part of the "Spirit Of The Anzacs tour we got to meet so many incredible veterans and hear their stories. The veteran space is such a complex and sensitive one and it's been a honour to learn more about it through the journey of this song. It is our hope 'Hey Brother' will be a discussion starter, so that the wider civilian community gain a better understanding of our veterans, as well as being a song of survival, mateship, hope and healing..." #HeyBrother http://hyperurl.co/thewolfebrothers See more

15.01.2022 Well done Guy Barnett and all those involved I’m finally making this happen.

15.01.2022 This morning was my first chance to pay tribute in Parliament to Ordinary Seaman Edward 'Teddy' Sheean after Prime Minister Scott Morrison (ScoMo)'s decision to recommend him for a posthumous Victoria Cross. Fitting recognition for one of Tasmania's finest sons. You can watch it here

13.01.2022 Tomorrow, 18 August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day and the 53rd anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, where we remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to all those who served. Australians should pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that was displayed throughout the battle and wider war. Almost 60,000 Australians served during the Vietnam War, and tragically 521 of them died with a further 3,000 wounded. The Battle of Long Tan to...ok place in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan and is widely known as one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers, who faced wet and muddy conditions due to torrential rain and the loss of their radios. We also remember the actions of more than 100 Australian and New Zealand soldiers who were vastly outnumbered, facing a force of 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. A commemorative Service will be held at the War Memorial Park in CURRIE. starting at 11.00am. The Service will be followed by light refreshments at the King Island RSL clubrooms. See more

12.01.2022 From our founder and CEO Jay Devereux: Dave Finney was a friend of mine. Hell, anyone who brushed shoulders with him was a mate because that’s who he was. Howe...ver, Dave and I shared a bond I share with many veterans - he was ready to give up and I just could not let that be an outcome. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there on that Friday - I will forever wonder could I have stopped this tragedy? I did take time out from my work to escort him home to his family and I mention this because no one else offered. It matters when we make the choice to be there, regardless of why we are there. Please know with recent Departmental decisions we will see more veterans taking their lives. This isn’t a maybe, it will happen! Tell this Government you will not accept these outcomes and by God do not allow more mothers to be enveloped in grief because studying problems is more correct than tackling them at the coal face!!!

11.01.2022 REMEMBERING THE SERVICE OF OUR MALAYA AND BORNEO VETERANS Today, on Malaya and Borneo Veterans' Day, Australia recognises our personnel who served in the Malaya...n Emergency (19481960), and the Indonesian Confrontation, or Konfrontasi, (19621966). Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said although sensitivities surrounding the conflicts prevented widespread media coverage at the time, our Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel played an important role in bringing these conflicts to an end. The Malayan Emergency was declared three years after the end of the Second World War, when the Malayan Communist Party launched an insurgency against British colonial rule, Mr Chester said. Australia’s commitment began with the Royal Australian Air Force in 1950 and they were joined by the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army in 1955. On 31 July this year, we marked 60 years since the end of the Malayan Emergency and while the Malayan government declared the Emergency over on 31 July 1960, some Australian units remained in Malaya until 1963. It is important we recognise our Defence personnel who served over the 13 years of Australia’s involvement, in what was one of Australia’s longest military commitments. The Indonesian Confrontation, a small undeclared war, began in 1962 after Indonesian forces launched attacks on the newly federated state of Malaysia. Australia’s commitment began in 1964, and in 1965 our troops assisted in small-scale operations in the thickly forested terrain of Borneo, Mr Chester said. Although the situation had stabilised by the end of 1965, events within Indonesia led to an official end to the conflict in the following year when a treaty between Indonesia and Malaysia was signed. Today, we pay tribute to the 39 Australians who died while serving in the Malayan Emergency, 15 of whom were killed in action. We also pay tribute to over 20 Australians who lost their lives whilst serving in the Indonesian Confrontation. To those veterans of these two conflicts, on behalf of Australia, thank you for your service and sacrifice. The Australian War Memorial will hold a Last Post Ceremony at 4:55pm AEST today, 31 August 2020, to commemorate Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day, and the service of Private Larry Richard Downes who died serving during the Indonesian Confrontation. Bookings are required and can be made on the Australian War Memorial website to secure your place. To find out more about the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation, please visit the Anzac Portal website. See more

08.01.2022 In 1918 King island was awarded the Honour Flag, for doubling its quota, in raising moneys for the war Loan, this was an an enormous achievement given its small population was down to about 500 as we had already sent most of our men to fight the war. This flag is a symbol of what King Islanders are capable of in times of need, Our Sub Branch will fly this flag throughout this difficult period as a reminder that we have seen hard times and thrived before, and the community is more than capable of pulling together and helping all those in need when called for.

07.01.2022 The king island RSL sub branch would like to thank Wayne Woodcock and Bass Strait Electrical. Works are being done to remove the overhead mains that are running very close to our Lone pine tree. The sub branch is working with king island council to improve and safeguard the future of the war memorial park and the building. Thank you to all involved

01.01.2022 He went back to his gun Dr Ray Leonard served on HMAS Armidale with Teddy Sheean. He was there on the 1st of December 1942, when Armidale was sunk and Teddy ...turned his back on the opportunity to survive, returned to his gun and fired on the enemy to try to save his mates. In the lead up to the Investiture Ceremony on 1 December, in which the Governor-General will present the Sheaan family with Teddy Sheean's Victoria Cross, Dr Leonard remembers that fateful day, the experience and what Teddy did.
