25.01.2022 NOW: 'LIVE FROM THE FIELD' Siying Zhou . (link in bio) . Question ONE: How could I capture my mind in this new living?... . //***** Where was I before March? What did I do in January and February? Did I make a new body of works? Did I attend to the opening of my exhibition? Was I going to catch up with Andree at a Chinese hotpot restaurant? Did I plan to travel to California, the United States of America to visit my grandma who is over 90 years old? What was the last movie I saw at cinema nova? What was like to sit down for a cup of coffee at a café in the morning? *****// . Facebook continues to pull me back further to a random point in a history that is stitched from a reservoir of my previous posts. In many mornings, it persistently asks me if I could like re-post a text, or a photo, or a text+photo that I leashed out 1, 9, or 10 years ago . . 'Live From The Field' is a series of regular updates on KINGS website by artists in lockdown. An alternative take on the rolling media feed, 'Live From the Field' offers diaristic reflections, critical texts, recipes, artworks and scripts in response to the current crisis. @siying_z See more

24.01.2022 The X Files Remastered' by Penny Walker-Keefe. Currently screening at www.kingsartistrun.org.au A remake the iconic intro theme of The X Files intro, scene-for-scene using painting and DIY props captured with video and stop motion animation. Utilising digital and analogue collage Walker-Keefe inserts their face into the film as a proxy for Mulder & Scully. Accompanying the film is a vocal recording of the theme song, the artist's voice simulating orchestral strings, complete... with the familiar whistle melody. The resulting humorous work dances between high and low fidelity and invites contemplation upon television, streaming services, practical effects, reproduction and fandom. 24.01.2022 Lia Dewey Morgan, from KINGS 'Live From the Field'

23.01.2022 Currently on show at KINGS! 'Phenomenological Geologies' by Ren Gregori . Gallery open Wed-Sat, 12-6pm . Phenomenological Geologies examines the phenomenon of homogeneity in contemporary urban and non-urban landscapes with a focus on Oxalis pes-caprae; an invasive plant species that is commonly found at sites of geological and ecological disruption in Victoria as well as many other parts of the world.... The global presence of O. pes-caprae is representative of not only the significant impact and scale that human agency has on environments but also the impact that increased environmental homogeneity, arising from human agency, has on individuals and collectives. Of particular concern to Gregori is the limitation of nature-human experiences and categories of thought that result from shifts towards increasingly uniform terrain structures and biodiversity within the Australian context. This process of terrain-biodiversity universalisation is mirrored in the global phenomenon of structural and aesthetic homogenisation embedded in many architectural, infrastructure, urban planning and nature-management expressions; outcomes that eventuate as a broader consequence of modernity . @ren.gregorcic Photos: @quisbie

23.01.2022 KINGS 'Live From the Field' is in this weeks iteration of Art Guide's online art list. Make sure you head to our website to read Lia Dewey Morgan's engaging texts and Siying Zhou's previous contributions!

20.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT: KINGS is moving out! . Due to a sudden turn of events the committee of KINGS Artist-Run have decided to vacate our King Street building at the end of February 2020. . Our old building on the west side of town has hosted hundreds of iconic exhibitions, performances and events that have deeply effected Melbourne and Australias arts ecology. It has been a space for people to gather, experiment and support one another in the early stages of their careers and art...istic practices. And whilst we are sad to say goodbye to our home of 16 years, we also see this as an opportunity for KINGS to reassess the viability of the inherited artist-run model in the current socio-economic climate. It is a chance for KINGS to consider the multitude of ways that we can continue to support emerging artists well into the future. . Throughout 2020 KINGS will be going mobile as we continue to present a range of events, talks, screenings, workshops and exhibitions in various locations throughout the city. . We would like to invite everyone in our community to join us on February 22 from 8pm-11pm for our Royal Departure and for your last chance to say bieeeeee to our building! More details TBA! See more

19.01.2022 Demo-mode! Come check out our freshly renovated gallery before we move out at our Royal Departure Party on the 22nd from 8pm. See you then

18.01.2022 KINGS has been a little quiet of late. We have had a break after our move and have working on a range of new projects and collaborations that we look forward to announcing over the next few weeks. Firstly, we would like to announce: . CONSTANT ECOLOGY . A collaborative project with BLINDSIDE, CAVES and West Space commissioning a series of in-house residencies for artists in Victoria... . In 2020, with the various cultural, economic, environmental and global ecologies we find ourselves undergoing major upheavals and transformations. From the unprecedented bushfires to the global pandemic, these changes to our contingent and fragile ecology require urgent reflection and critical scrutiny. In response, four independent art organisationsBLINDSIDE, CAVES, KINGS Artist-Run and West Spacehave developed Constant Ecology, a collaborative initiative that seeks to address this current moment by supporting a series of in-home residencies by artists and creatives based in Victoria. . 17.01.2022 LIVE FROM THE FIELD: Siying Zhou . (Link in bio) . "My posts in #LiveFromTheField end after this, when the wave of COVID19 is felt like slowly rolling flat towards a shore.... . In a shrunk life under COVID19, I have broken and been dissolving inside the internet cable networks. The quotidian engagement with my phone, iPad and laptop, registers me as sequences of data, and feeds bits of me to multiple authoritarian tech avenues. If death could be reinterpreted as a digitalisation: turning everything about a person, including the physical condition, social networks, knowledge etc, into data, the process of dying has begun to me." . 17.01.2022 KINGS and@un_projectshave been working together with our good friends at@tcb_artinc@seventhgalleryand@busprojectson a series of interviews with artists who are a part of their respective programs. . Two artists participating in SEVENTH Gallery's upcoming program, Marley Holloway-Clarke and Dale Collier have engaged in an ongoing correspondence with Kate ten Buuren and Beatrice Rubio-Gabriel respectively. You can access these thoughtful and deep discussions through our ...linktree and all are available to read on Dear un. . Marley Holloway-Clarke - 'I hope to provide a space for artists to tell their story through their work. So broadly speaking, the audience can expect to be told a story of Blak-ness and its many intersectionalities. I believe that art is a reflection of your reality, and I hope this exhibition will reflect the new communities that are being formed, the momentum that social media can bring to a cause, as well as look at the way artists are using this time to reflect on themselves, their knowledge of the world and how it impacts them as people.' . In response to the impacts of the current COVID-19 crisis on our community, KINGS Artist-Run and un Projects are collaborating with Bus Projects, TCB Art Inc. and SEVENTH to profile a range of artistic projects that have been impacted by the temporary closure of their physical spaces. . 15.01.2022 'The X Files Remastered' by Penny Walker-Keefe. Currently screening at www.kingsartistrun.org.au In 2019 SBS Viceland began airing a remastering of the cult TV show The X Files. Its horror has paled since its first airing in the 90s when it was filmed. In the golden age of television, the artist found themself re-watching episodes of Th X Files every night after dinner. ... The burden of choice was removed by watching just this one program, dodging the show-verload of options presented by competing streaming services. The show that spooked Walker-Keefe when they were a kid had now become a part of their daily routine, the characters an extension of their person. The resulting humorous artwork invites contemplation on television, streaming services, practical effects, reproduction and fandom . 10.01.2022 'LIVE FROM THE FIELD: Siying Zhou' . (Link in bio) . TWO: I Observe a body... . Thursday the 9th of April 2020 Woken up by a bursting and sore bladder. My body had warmed my sack for the whole night. It would feel miserable to get up. I was telling my body to hold on for few more minutes. Just keep the eyes closed, keep dreaming, keep holding ... In the first week of the isolation, the relationship between me and my body was intense. I was sick. The fear of coronavirus infection magnified my focus on my biological self. Three times a day, I studied my pulse and measured my body temperature. I listened to my chest through breathing, searching for the hissing sounds. I recorded my appetite at every meal. I had certainly gathered a lot information about this 40-year-old body. But I was still estranged from it. I cared for it as if it was an external subject, a patient whom my existence was dependent on. . LIVE FROM THE FIELD is a series of regular updates on KINGS website by artists in lockdown. . 01.01.2022 'Mimeisthai' by Phoebe Robinson. Currently screening at www.kingsartistrun.org.au 'Mimeisthai' is a multi-channel screen-dance installation adapted here for single channel viewing. This work responds to Walter Benjamins concept of the mimetic faculty, which is, the ability to perceive and/or reproduce similarity. This generic skill is possessed by all living things and finds expression on various levels, from the biological to the behavioural; such as in reproduction or ca...mouflage, to the myriad ways that creatures communicate. In humans the mimetic faculty is said to be especially complex, enabling pre-verbal perceptions that lead to the construction of meaning and language.
