15.01.2022 Skilled Hunter | Now a skilled eventer! Skilled Hunter raced in Victoria before travelling to WA to train under Darren Taylor. Across his career this gelding, s...ired by Skilled and out of Dream Time Hunter had 27 starts for three wins, four thirds and $49,139 in prizemoney. Kellie Anderson purchased Skilled Hunter, now known as Vermentino, or Vino when he retired in 2018 from his racing owner, Jules Webber. By 2019 Vino and Kellie were competing at 80cm eventing and show jumping, and have now stepped up to 95cm events. In their first event of 2020 the pair placed fifth in the 95cm Off the Track class at the Gidgegannup CCN. Vino performed his best dressage test, and jumped a double clear in both show jumping and cross country. Kellie plans on continuing to compete Vino in eventing, show jumping and dressage for the rest of the competition season with an end goal of competing at Equestrian in The Park. The 17hh gelding is kind, honest horse who will do anything for a carrot! Legend has it he can hear a bag of carrots opening from 100 metres away. We look forward to seeing this pair at Wooroloo CCN!

06.01.2022 Flat terrain, versus hilly---- Go ride a bike along a long stretch of flat, paved (for good traction) road---Not much struggle, right? Now you come to a mild up...hill grade. You have to pedal harder, your heart beats harder, your breath comes in deeper inhalations, you start to sweat, perhaps. Now the hill gets steeper, you begin to feel the effects in all your physical systems, heart, lungs, muscles. It is the same, obviously, when you are riding or driving a horse on hills. They struggle harder uphill, and have to dig in to hold back coming downhill. You can get horses enormously more fit if you have access to hills, but you also need to be careful, because steep hills can wrench the guts out of even a fit horse, and can devastate one that isnt already conditioned. At first, walk the hills, and when you know you have built a base, add some trotting on the milder uphill grades. Build as you go. Take weeks. Theres a saying that uphill is harder on heart and lungs, downhill harder on the body. If you have any doubts, get off and walk with the horse up some steep hills, see how easy it feels for you---Just because the rider in the saddle cant feel it doesnt mean the horse cant feel it.

04.01.2022 Jack LeGoff used to say that he could build a cross country course three feet high that no horse in the world could get around clean. By which he meant a test s...o unfair, with fences so strategically placed in the most challenging places, that even the best jumpers, the bravest horses, the most skillful riders, would struggle and fall. Any course designer who builds a course that causes lots of crashing falls, and is quick to blame the riders, deserves to be graded with an F, or a D- at best. Anyone can build traps. That was Jacks point.
