If you come to our practice for regular check up and clean, you may hear our dentists or nurses mention about those words. ... ---------What is Plaque--------- Plaque contains bacteria which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. It is made from our salvia and leftover food in our mouth. If we do not brush teeth properly after meals, it will start to form and build up on the teeth. Especially eating foods high in sugar will increase the amount of plaque bacteria. You can brush away plaque if you brush your teeth properly. ---------What is Tartar---------- Over time, if we do not brush and floss away all the plaque from our teeth within 24 to 72 hours, the plaque will become harder and yellow or brown colour, the hardened form is called Tartar also known as calculus. Tartar provides more surfaces for plaque to stick on to. Moreover, Tartar absorbs stains easily, especially to coffee or tea drinkers. Unfortunately, if you have tartar, you will need to see a dentist or a hygienist to clean it for you. ------------Important---------------- So, the first thing to improve our oral hygiene is brushing our teeth correctly and have a regular check up and clean every 6 months!
