21.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BAN has been declared for Saturday 3rd April. LOWER SOUTH EAST -SEVERE

20.01.2022 How amazing are volunteers? On International Day of the Volunteer, and every day, we want to send our thanks to all our CFS volunteers, who, 24/7, 365 days a ye...ar, are on call to respond to wide range of incidents across the state. We also want to thank the volunteers across the emergency services, and all of the community groups who help us to respond and help to keep the community safe.

20.01.2022 A message from Chief Officer Mark Jones QFSM: Yesterday saw the first significant fire weather for the 2020-21 Fire Danger Season. The CFS and MFS responded to ...hundreds for fires, most of which were initiated by lightning strikes. The majority of the fires were expertly extinguished due to the fast response of our state’s firefighters backed by rapid deployment of aerial support on the larger incidents. Whilst this is the first bushfire test of the season, both fire services continue to work together to deliver high quality safety services to the public across the state. I would also like to thank those who operated Farm Fire Units who did an excellent job putting out smaller fires on their properties, without the CFS needing to attend. These fires serve as a timely reminder that the weather and nature will continue to present challenges to the safety of South Australians. The Fire Services of the State recognise those challenges and prepare to face them together in the best tradition of the emergency services. The CFS alone responded to 163 fires, with over 200 call outs for other emergency responses, including road crash rescue and trees down. Thank you to all of our volunteers who responded to incidents yesterday, and to the members of public who heeded our messages and helped us to keep you safe.

18.01.2022 Incident Update for Deepwater Fire : Issued for DEEPWATER regarding the DEEPWATER fire. The Deepwater fire has burnt approx. 2300 hectares of scrub and grass i...n the Deepwater Conservation Park and private land near Keith in the Upper South East. CFS along with Farm Fire Units and Department of Environment and Water (DEW) crews have worked with earth moving equipment to put control lines around the perimeter of this fire. The terrain includes sandy and swampy areas which has made access and construction of control lines difficult at times. CFS and DEW crews are continuing to patrol and mop up hotspots around the fire ground. Due to the heavy fuels that the fire has passed through, there are still some smouldering tree stumps and logs within the burnt ground that are producing smoke. This fire is likely to continue producing smoke in the area. If you suffer from any respiratory illnesses, please consider closing doors and windows. If you need to travel in the area, be aware smoke may impair your visibility. Please take care and drive to the conditions. What to do For updates visit the CFS website (https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/) or phone the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1800 362 361.

18.01.2022 Kingston CFS hosted Driving under operation conditions over the weekend. We had 5 CFS appliances each day (from over the region) driving around the township in the mornings and then in afternoons they headed out to Noolook forest to put their skill to the test. Well done to everyone that completed the course each day. And well done to 6 members from the Lacepede Group who completed the course over the weekend. Big thanks to Terry, Meagan and Delta for catering (lunch looked fantastic and the cakes were a big hit too). Thanks to the training team for coming down.

16.01.2022 With the recent Fires within the Lacepede Group it is disappointing that one of our much loved rural Brigades was broken into. Marcollat CFS brigade was broken into and some equipment and property was stolen. The brigade is shaken up by this that someone(s) could brake in to a CFS volunteer brigade that protect the community. Some kind of human beings feel like it their right to brake in and take equipment and damage property that was donated to the brigad...e. It is very disappointing that you feel like you have the right to do this! If anyone has seen any activity around the marcollat CFS station or see any property/equipment please ring the SA police or the CFS regional office in Naracoorte. It would be nice to be able to get some of the property/equipment back that was donated. Please feel free to share this post, the more we share it maybe they might turn themselves in or bring back what doesn’t belong to them. Thankyou Lacepede Group Admin

15.01.2022 Fire Danger Ratings are an indicator of how dangerous a bushfire could be if it did occur. It is not a predictor of how likely a bushfire is to occur. Do you know what the different ratings mean?

15.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BANS have been declared for Friday 27 November 2020 in the following Fire Ban Districts: West Coast - Severe Eastern Eyre Peninsula - Severe Lower Ey...re Peninsula - Severe Mid North - Severe Mount Lofty Ranges - Extreme Yorke Peninsula - Severe Lower South East - Severe Where Total Fire Bans have been declared, very hazardous fire weather conditions are predicted. The Total Fire Ban will apply for 24 hours from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow. The CFS recommends that you implement your Bushfire Survival Plan. FIRE DANGER RATING Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Extreme, only well prepared, well constructed and actively defended houses are likely to offer safety during a fire. Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Severe, well prepared and actively defended houses can offer safety during a fire. BUSHFIRE PLAN If you don't have a plan to ensure your survival, leaving early before a fire starts is your safest option. In making your plan, you should be aware that in high fire danger conditions, essential services including mains-fed electricity and water supply may not be available due to the prevailing weather conditions. Landowners are asked to adhere to local harvest codes of practice which are available from your local council. Landowners are also asked to ensure that any burn-off activities conducted today are fully extinguished before midnight tonight. Agencies are advised to activate their Total Fire Ban procedures in preparation for these predicted fire weather conditions. For further information contact the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1800 362 361 or visit www.cfs.sa.gov.au

15.01.2022 Thursday night training involves lots of little or big job you could say like checking over the quick fill pumps and doing a burn over drill. After we decided to take over vehicles down to the local car wash (Larry’s car wash) and give them a good scrub and a polish. Let see how long they stay clean for.

14.01.2022 Warning for Easter travellers: Total Fire Ban possible for Lower South East on Saturday Persistent dry conditions, high temperatures and strengthening winds may... push the Lower South East of South Australia into a Total Fire Ban on Saturday. Country Fire Service State Duty Commander Brenton Hastie said although it may feel like we are out of the Fire Danger Season, the risk still remains for large fires to break out. Over the long weekend, particularly Saturday, the Lower South East will reach conditions that will likely trigger a Total Fire Ban. Holiday makers travelling along the Limestone Coast, from the southern areas of the Coorong to the state border, should plan to not use solid fuels for cooking or heating. When Total Fire Bans are issued only gas or electric barbecues are permitted under certain conditions, Mr Hastie said. Wood smokers and wood fired pizza ovens are also not allowed. Mr Hastie said people caught using wood fires in the area, if a Total Fire Ban is announced, could face prosecution. The Lower South East has seen several large fires this season, including the devastating fire near Lucindale, so it would be great if people can go gas or electric over the break and give our volunteer firefighters a rest over the long weekend too. People travelling away from home for the Easter break should install the AlertSA app or listen to local radio stations to be notified if fires do start in their area. If a fire does break out in an area you are travelling through, don’t travel towards the smoke or fire, and go to the nearest Bushfire Safer Place or built up area until the risk has reduced. With many areas still having a whole month to go before their Fire Danger Season is finished, now is not the time to become complacent, Mr Hastie said. The Total Fire Ban, if required, will be declared after 4:00pm on Friday. Details on what activities are allowed during Total Fire Bans and when Fire Danger Seasons are ending across the state are available at cfs.sa.gov.au See more

13.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS for people in Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Murraylands, Upper Sou...th East, Lower South East and parts of Yorke Peninsula and Mid North districts. Very windy for southern SA Saturday afternoon. A strong front will enter the west of SA this evening then move across western and central SA overnight and Saturday morning, then into the northeast Saturday afternoon. The front will bring with it a band of gusty showers and thunderstorms, mostly during the morning, followed by strong damaging westerly winds in the afternoon. Gusty northeast to northwest winds will turn strong westerly following the front on Saturday and become damaging, averaging 50-70 km/h with gusts of 80-100 km/h at times across the warning area during the afternoon. The strongest winds are likely to occur about the ranges. Localised gusty winds may also occur near showers and thunderstorms during the morning, with a slight risk of damaging wind gusts. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Mount Gambier, Maitland, Murray Bridge, Kingscote, Naracoorte, Meningie and Bordertown. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees; * Secure or put away loose items around your property. * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21037.shtml

12.01.2022 Hay stack fires increasing as temperatures rise: The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is responding to an increasing number of hay stack fires due to bales being s...tored with higher levels of moisture. State Duty Commander Brenton Hastie said the late winter rain has increased the risk of hay being baled wet. Increased moisture levels cause a bacterial chain reaction in hay bales when external temperatures rise, Mr Hastie said. The result of the chain reaction is a building of heat, which can result in spontaneous combustion of the bales. If the bales are stored within a large stack, the fire will quickly spread through the stack and may destroy any surrounding building and equipment, Mr Hastie said. Mr Hastie said hay stack fires were problematic for the Country Fire Service, as they are events that take days to fully extinguish and may require volunteer crews to remain on site for lengthy periods of time. Primary producers storing hay can help the CFS by monitoring the temperatures of hay bales that are stored, and immediately removing any bales that begin to produce steam or smoke or are showing signs of heat build-up. Hay fires are heart-breaking for farmers, as they generally destroy large amounts of feed and nearby machinery, so the best outcome we can have is to limit the chance of the fires starting to begin with by regularly monitoring the stores and lowering the risk of a fire starting, Mr Hastie said.

06.01.2022 It been a big day for Region 5 Cadets. 5 cadets from lacepede and 5 cadets from Port MacDonald. It was a very early start for everyone especially the port MacDonald cadets, as we all traveled to Adeliade for Anzac vigil rehearsal. Cadets looked very snazzy in their PPE while they were learning how to March (they all will be dreaming of marching tonight) and then they did a run though on how they will be doing their duty on the night of the vigil. All the cadets looked like... they were enjoying every minute of it plus the concentration on their faces to get the moves right. Now to practice ready for the 24-25 April for the Anzac Vigil. What a great honour these cadets have to be apart of something great. Big thank you to Meagan Robinson (cadet coordinator) for all your organisations behind the scenes to make this happen. To Terry Pass (lecepede cadets) for stepping in today for the rehearsal and to Ray Coutts and Rodney Virgo ( Port MacDonald cadets) for getting your cadets up extra early to catch the bus. This could not have happen without these leaders stepping up for their cadets. Hope you all get some practice in before we head back down for Anzac Vigil. What a amazing opportunity these 10 cadets will have and a wonderful honour to experience. Well done everyone great work today.

06.01.2022 The lacepede cadets had a great training session tonight for their end of term windup. They showed us how great they can work together as a team to get the ball though the obstacle course. Their was some great times as they all took their turns on the branch. Have a great break and see you all next term.... If you are interested in coming along and your between the ages of 11-17 years our next session will be Monday 3rd may at 6pm at the Kingston CFS station. Meagan Robinson Cadet Coordinator

05.01.2022 Bushfires can create their own weather, generating ‘pyrocumulonimbus’ clouds and storms. These clouds can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in f...ire behaviour, making the fire more difficult and hazardous to fight. So, how do they form? 1. A plume of hot, turbulent air and smoke rises. 2. Turbulence mixes cooler air into the plume, causing it to broaden and cool as it rises. 3. When the plume rises high enough, low atmospheric pressure causes its air to cool and cloud to form. 4. In an unstable atmosphere a thunderstorm can develop: pyrocumulonimbus cloud. 5. Rain in the cloud evaporates and cools when it comes into contact with dry air, producing a downburst. 6. Lightning may be produced and can ignite new fires. Find out more, including how our scientists are working to be able to predict them, in our blog: http://ow.ly/3t1i50x8nM6 For the latest fire weather warnings see http://ow.ly/tbTN50x8nz8, and follow advice from emergency services NSW Rural Fire Service Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES ABC Emergency
