04.01.2022 Heres a quick guide to the whole septic tank thing... for those of you new to onsite sewerage disposal! A septic tank is an underground tank that uses natural biological decomposition and drainage processes to treat wastewater produced by bathrooms, kitchen sinks and laundries. As wastewater passes through the septic tank, solid waste is separated and sinks to the bottom. At this point, healthy bacterial digestion occurs, reducing the quantity of solids and breaking them down... into sludge. Lighter materials like grease and oil float to the surface and form a layer of crusty scum (mmmm). This layer seals in air that optimizes bacteria breakdown. The tertiary treated water then passes through to the absorption trenches. A pump out service is required before sludge levels reach 30% of the total volume of the septic tank. Regular septic tank maintenance can help desludge the entire system before serious problems occur. Periodic sewerage tank cleaning can: Prevent sewerage drain blockages Avoid discharge of raw sewage via the trenches Eliminate bad smells It will also ensure your septic trenches last a lot longer as there is less load on the system.
