14.01.2022 Public Notice We at Intrapac Property and Bayport understand and share the communitys concerns about the kangaroos on the Kinley site. Please keep in mind, we have a major responsibility to the broader community to manage the kangaroos on our site properly. This small mob of kangaroos is land locked and has the potential to become a serious hazard as the development progresses. The last thing anyone wants to see is kangaroos fleeing the site, which will be opened up soon, on...ly to cause traffic accidents or worse. Any action involving native fauna requires approval from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). Intrapac Property and Bayport spent more than two years trying to get alternative options approved before culling became the outcome. The Yarra Ranges Council is not responsible for the decision that has had to be taken. We actually received the approval to cull in late 2019. However, we chose to spend a further 9 months trying to find alternatives, including approaching wildlife trusts to find a home for relocation. We did receive some offers for relocation, but none were approved by DELWP due to the stress it causes the animals, and also that they are highly territorial and are likely to be attacked and killed by existing kangaroos in a new habitat. We also looked at sterilisation to allow the kangaroos to live out their days on site, but this too was not an accepted approach by DELWP due to the stress it can cause the animals. In the end, culling was the only option remaining, and arguably the most humane. Due to the amount of work now occurring on site we simply cannot wait any longer if we are to ensure the safety of those on site and in the surrounding community. The culling permit requires us to notify nearby residents for safety reasons, which is what we have done. There has been no attempt to conceal this outcome from the community. The Lilydale Quarry Community Advisory Group was made aware of the likely outcome to cull the kangaroo population as early as June 2019. This group comprises 8, self-nominated local residents from across the surrounding area who meet with the development team on a quarterly basis.
