17.01.2022 23 April English Day Kip Mcgrath Education Centres Capalaba Precious advice from an author. In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write a famous author and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond - and his response is magnificent:... Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta: I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I don’t make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana. What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow. Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend you’re Count Dracula. Here’s an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you don’t do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK? Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash receptacals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow. God bless you all!" 16.01.2022 It’s World Children’s Day! A day to reimagine a better future for our children. World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s annual day of action for children, by children. ... This year, the COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a child rights crisis. The costs of the pandemic for children are immediate and, if unaddressed, may last a lifetime. It’s time for generations to come together to reimagine the type of world we want to create. Kids are reimagining a better world. What will you do to encourage them? What an honour to work with our Kip Kids every day. #worldchildrensday2020 #children #celebrate #bettertogether #upstairsatkip #learnersupport #kipmcgrathsandgate #serving4017 #sandgate #kipkids #children
11.01.2022 Yay for World Earth Day ! What do we have on our shelf at Upstairs@Kip Kip Mcgrath Education Centres Capalaba ? We all relate to stories. Even though not all learners enjoy reading (yet) , they love stories. Thanks to technology, they can read along to a recording of more difficult books and will enjoy the story and message without being stuck on difficult words. When reading becomes joyful instead of a chore or even punishment, learners are encouraged to read more and ...become more brave and bold in their attempts. The two Oliver Jeffers titles on our shelves , 'What We'll Build' and ' Here We Are ', are both available as mini movies on YouTube. Even if you don't have the books, do share the stories with your children. The book chosen for Australian Library and Information Association National Simultaneous Storytime 2021 this year, " Give Me Some Space " by Philip Bunting is a beautiful reminder that Mother Earth remains the most magnificent planet to live on even though space can be so enchanting. Tippy Jellybean is quite an emotional real life story about two Koalas who survived the devastating bush fires at the end of 2019. There are some lovely books for adults to enjoy relating to Earth Day too. Today, take a moment away from the busyness and bustle of everyday life to think about our planet. Learn, be challenged, and empower yourself to make a change and take care of our precious home. #upstairsatkip #kipmcgrathcapalaba #capalaba #serving4157 #learnersupport #readtogether #readtome #readwithme #readingskills #readingsolutions #english #englishvocabulary #englishsupport
06.01.2022 Remembrance Day 1111 1918 November 11 Armistice Day: World War I ends... At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice (truce) agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure. It was a significant world event and not a joyful one. Let's talk about it. World War I (or the First World War) was a global war originating in Europe. It lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. The war is also known as the Great War or "the war to end all wars", which led to the mobilisation of more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, making it one of the largest wars in history. Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards. Anzac Day is a day for commemoration, for thanking the veterans and it's also part of our national story. Remembrance Day, on the other hand, is solely about remembrance. It's solely about remembering those 102,800 Australians who have given their lives for a bid for peace. #upstairsatkip #learnersupport #kipmcgrathcapalaba #serving4157 #remembranceday2020 #RemembranceDay #poppies #ww1 #truce #Treaty #armisticeday #armistice #peace
05.01.2022 23 April World Book and opyrightDay In 1995, UNESCO decided to celebrate April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day, and since then, the date has prominence in the history of literature.... Why April 23? April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature because on this day in 1616 Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. The day also marks the death and birth anniversary of many other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. The date was therefore an obvious choice to celebrate World Book Day worldwide. As a celebration of this year's World Book and Copyright Day UNESCO created a 'Bookface' challenge". Book covers are incredibly important and play a vital role in our buying decisions. We’re all extremely judgemental about covers, even though we should "not judge a book by it's cover"! . The pandemic has also reminded us all of the importance of books and reading for comfort and escapism. Let your imagination meet your book covers! Take a picture of yourself with a book cover (or a page of a book) so that it blends into your reality. Send your photos to [email protected] and tag us at Kip Mcgrath Education Centres Capalaba Even though today is also English Day, take photos in as many languages as possible! What is on your bookshelf? Share a picture of your favourite titles with us. Take an interesting Bookface picture and just enjoy reading together or to someone who is unable to read. #upstairsatkip #kipmcgrath #EnglishDay #kipmcgrathcapalaba #capalaba #books #readtogether #readtome #readwithme #stories #worldbookday #WorldCopyrightDay
