25.01.2022 Jailbreak is a half hour radio show for people in prison, families and the community. At the heart of the radio program is the music, much of it written and performed by the very people who listen in, who courageously talk about prison, their incredible stories of struggles and hardship and inspire hope in others. A critical role of Jailbreak is health promotion and harm reduction in exposure to blood-borne viruses. ... Jailbreak is funded by NSW Health . #KRCHealh4All

25.01.2022 Welcome to the first of our series of quarterly updates on what research is underway at KRC. Research is at the heart of KRC’s work to improve the way we deliver care. There’s research in all shapes and sizes going on from smaller scale internal projects right up to larger collaborative studies with external partners. Here’s the low-down on a few of the important things happening research-wise. Rates of bacterial STIs are rising in Australia in gay and bisexual men in parti...cular. Although STIs are easy to diagnose and treat, untreated STIs can cause significant health issues. Syphillaxis (Kirby Institute) is a trial of whether taking doxycycline daily in a high risk population would reduce the rate of STIs. KRC is one of the three sexual health centres where the trial is being conducted. TEMPO is a pilot study in collaboration with the Kirby Institute which is operating from the KRC/NUAA Open Clinic. The study assesses whether finger-stick hepatitis C (HCV) testing, offer of same-day HCV treatment and peer-based support can improve diagnosis, linkage to care and treatment among people who inject drugs attending needle and syringe programs. HCV is a major contributor to co-morbidity in people with HIV. The national multi-site CEASE study (Kirby Institute) aims to evaluate the feasibility of rapid scale-up of direct acting antiviral (DAA) treatments and their impact on controlling and eliminating HCV infection from people living with HIV. Follow-up of participants has recently commenced at KRC. Fentanyl test strips allow people to test their heroin for the presence of fentanyl and to make more informed decisions about drug use. A multi-site study (NDARC) trialing the strips is in the final stages of follow-up at KRC. The study aims to gauge whether people who use heroin are concerned about unintentional fentanyl use, whether they’d use the strips, and whether using the strips leads to any changes in drug use behaviours. That’s all for now until the next edition of Ed’s Research Roundup. #KRCHealth4All #EdIsaRealPerson
24.01.2022 Scotland recorded 1,187 drug-related deaths in in 2018, the highest number since records began in 1996. In an effort to reduce this tragic number of deaths, some Scottish Police Officers will be issued with an emergency antidote to treat drug overdose as part of a pilot project. The nasal spray Naloxone counters the effects of overdoses from opioids such as heroin. KRC provides free Naloxone kits and training for people who are at risk of overdosing and their family members,... friends or carers. To find out more, send us a private message through Facebook, or simply give us a ring on 9360 2766. #KRCHealth4All #OverdoseAware #EndOverdose
24.01.2022 KRC peers, clinicians and health promotion staff are co-producing a series of short films aimed at reducing reinfection following treatment for hepatitis C. With the support of film maker Conor Ashleigh, KRC peers are writing, acting, filming, recording and editing their stories. KRC gratefully acknowledges the funding support provided by HARP South Eastern Sydney Health and INHSU for this project.... #KRCHealth4All Duke's Creations
24.01.2022 Our friends at NUAA NSW have developed PeerLine, a confidential peer-run telephone service providing support to people who use drugs, who are on the opioid treatment program or who are seeking treatment across NSW. While they're not a counselling service, they are a non-judgemental team of peers who are trained to listen and offer advice, referrals, support and individual advocacy. They are there to talk, or just listen, about what is happening in your life and to help you connect with your community and empower you to take control. #KRCHealth4All NUAA NSW

23.01.2022 KRC has partnered with the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) to trial the distribution of fentanyl test strips among people who use heroin. Heroin mixed with fentanyl has resulted in an increase in opioid overdoses. In response to this public health crisis, some community-based organisations have started distributing fentanyl test strips, which allow people to test their illicit substances for the presence of fentanyl. We hope this study will help us learn ...more about whether people who use heroin are concerned about unintentional fentanyl use, whether they would use fentanyl test strips to test their substances for the presence of fentanyl, and whether the distribution of fentanyl test strips would lead to any changes in substance use behaviours. We also hope that the study will provide important data on support for broader drug checking services among people who use heroin. We’ll keep you posted about the findings!
23.01.2022 Meet Katrina, KRC’s new Clinical Nurse Consultant who will coordinate KRC’s Clinical Outreach program. Katrina has over 13 years nursing experience under her belt and is also a Registered Midwife. She’s worked all over the place from remote bush clinics in Australia and abroad, in pop up primary health clinics for asylum seekers and refugees in Brisbane and Darwin to bustling and busy maternity services in Sydney. Katrina has been with KRC for over 5 years, leaving to gain ...new skills and try new things then coming back to KRC to show them off. She loves van life and can be seen slowly crawling out of the city in her rusty old home on wheels, Moira most weekends. She appreciates a side hustle and has a bathroom full of homemade deodorants, scrubs and balms she pushes on her family and friends come Christmas time. Katrina says she likes taking life easy. She also says she dislikes writing bio’s about herself. #KRCHealth4All

22.01.2022 Today I learnt about. Acknowledging Country, with gratitude. At KRC, we pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land on which we gather in Kings Cross and Potts Point, this being the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. Acknowledgement of Country is a way for non-Aboriginal people, or an Aboriginal person who is not a Traditional Custodian of the land where an event or meeting is being held, to show recognition and respect for Aboriginal people. ...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. This is a day to remember trans people who have lost their lives to transphobic violence. The day also draws attention to the continued violence that many trans people are subjected to. Much of this violence is targeted at transgender sex workers. This evening at 7pm the Gender Centre, City of Sydney, Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC), Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the Sex Worker Outreach Project (SWOP) are running a virtual can...dlelight vigil to mark the day. https://www.facebook.com/events/831246300955954/ #KRCHealth4All ACON #TransAwarenessWeek

13.01.2022 Here's an interesting overview of harm reduction from the European Joint Action on HIV, Co-infection Prevention and Harm Reduction. While it doesn't speak directly to the Australian context, and says little about the critical role that affected communities play, nevertheless it's a useful summary of the kinds of programs that work. #KRCHealth4All

08.01.2022 KRC recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Always Was, Always Will Be. Is the theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week being celebrated across the nation. Condoman is the iconic "deadly protector of sexual health" that represents integrity, credibility and the responsibility of promoting the message of safe sex for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
