20.01.2022 The difference between qualitative and quantitative research is not just that they use different methods but they are based on very different philosophies about what counts (pardon the pun) and how we know. In this science communication article, I discuss why qualitative and quantitative research are fundamentally incomparable. Discussions about quantitative and qualitative research should not be about which one is more scientific, truthful or ‘better’. They should be about ...which approach is most appropriate. Seeing as this is really a matter of horses for courses, I use research into human-horse relationships to illustrate my points. This was a particularly challenging piece to write - communicating the history of academia and explaining whole paradigms of science to a broad public audience in a few pages, without oversimplifying the critical points. https://horsesandpeople.com.au/like-apples-and-oranges-th/

17.01.2022 Writing up qualitative or mixed methods data can be a challenge for people used to more posititive or experimental research. I had the pleasure of delivering a one day workshop to a research organisation about qualitative research methodologies and methods, valuing and evaluating qual on its own terms and how to incorporate participant quotations into research reports and articles.
