25.01.2022 Guess what!! I still nurse my 4.5 year old to sleep and I’m so proud of that achievement!! There have been many times I wanted to throw in the towel but I pushed through (mostly out of laziness tbh). He falls asleep so easily on the breast and I love the alone time after all the kids are in bed ... Why do I still nurse him? Because I believe we both still benefit from it. It’s easy to see the comfort it brings him. Not to mention the immune boosting antibodies in breast milk. No, I didn’t plan to feed him this long and I certainly wouldn’t have guess it when he was born but it works for us. When will I stop? I have no answer for that yet because I honestly don’t know. I don’t think it will be long before he naturally weans. He only nurses for a few minutes before falling asleep most nights. Yes, he can fall asleep independently and does so if i am not at home with no troubles at all. Yes we most definitely have boundaries in place and he will stop if I ask him to. Extended term breast/chest feeding or natural term breast/chest feeding is often seen as taboo in our society today but most nursing toddlers will naturally wean between the age of 4-7. I’ve just posted a really insightful paper in my stories that I will save to my feeding highlights with some compassions to@other mammals. Feel free to ask any questions you have on the topic xx #breastfeeding #chestfeeding #extendedbreastfeeding #naturaltermbreastfeeding #662movement #nursingtoddler #naturalparenting

25.01.2022 Oh man I can relate 100% too this, anyone else??

24.01.2022 This photograph of me was taken almost a year ago. It was hard work to strip down and be photographed. It involved so much expectation (on myself), nerves, tears and working with someone I knew and trusted to get to that point. It feels like lifetimes ago. In many ways it is. There are countless parts for myself Ive reclaimed, countless parts Ive let go of and countless parts I never knew existed.... The growth and journey have bought me to a place now where I welcome the shadows. Being triggered makes me excited to find where that feeling and reaction comes from. I am in love with the process and work. In a conversation with my husband yesterday he mentioned how as a race we are not evolved enough to deal with so many issues in the world. I called bullsh*t. We are each responsible for our triggers, they are things we need to work on individually. When people move from reactive to objective then collectively we can move forward. Its people sitting in the reactivate nature that will be left behind. #Repost @belle_verdiglione with @get_repost GODDESS ALERT I put together a #potentidentity slideshow today for an event Im speaking at on Tuesday and it was so incredible going back through my older sessions. 24.01.2022 Wow what an increase! Has covid changed your plans on where you have/will be birthing? I only wish home-birth was more assessable to all who choose it.

23.01.2022 This Christmas Eve I want to take a moment to remember with you those babies who should be celebrating their first Christmas. I remember with you those babies who should now be tantruming toddlers, or sassy school kids, or grown with children of their own. We remember. Who are you missing this Christmas? Post your baby's name(s) and a Christmas wish.

23.01.2022 The fundus and its relation to dilation We think in pictures and we should be painting accurate pictures. The cervix nor the vagina bloom. The cervix is not a zip lock bag. The purpose of labor is NOT the creation of an opening or a hole... The purpose of labor contractions and retractions is to BUILD the fundus, which will, when it is ready, EJECT the baby, like a piston. Without a nice thick fundus there is no power to get baby out....the cervix does not dilate out....i...t dilates UP as a result of the effort to pull muscles up into the uterus to push muscles up to the fundus. The cervical dilation is secondary to that. The cervix is pulled up as a result of the building of the fundus. Assigning a number to cervical dilation is of little consequence and we make a huge mistake by interpreting progress or predicting time of birth to that number. Any experienced midwife or OB can tell you that the cervix can be manipulated and that a woman whose cervix is at 7 could have the baby in a few minutes or a few hours. If more providers and educators knew the truth about birth physiology, we could make a huge difference for mothers. What is important is to keep her well supported for the purpose of the appropriate chemistry, to keep her well hydrated and nourished for muscle strength, and to believe in her. We should be supporting her so that her physiology and that of her baby are unhindered, so they can finish what they started. We should not be measuring, poking, or interpreting her labor. THIS CHANGE in teaching about labor could make such a difference for women who are imagining what is happening in their bodies during labor. How much more strength might they have if they have an accurate picture?" -Carla Hartley http://www.indybirthservices.com/blog/nova-birth-services

22.01.2022 My baby is in his own bed and I am in mine. It feels unfamiliar and lonely. Ive been dreaming of this day for a while and yet dreading it at the same time. ... I know he will be back again tonight, well I hope he will. . Another first for him and last for me. Growing kids is brutal.

19.01.2022 Amazing Stat @loralee.midwife with @get_repost 2020 birth stats ... I’ve supported 43 families through their pregnancy, birth and postpartum journeys ... ... 37 babies born safely at home 3 vaginal births in hospital 3 babies born by cesarean section I hold so much love, admiration and gratitude for all the families that have been in my care, amidst this pretty spectacular year!!!

18.01.2022 On Wednesday I had the pleasure of meeting some truly amazing woman. What has drawn us together is a beautiful thread that calls us all to share a part of our stories in a collective Anthology book! still pinching myself that I will be a published author in the not to distant future. I still have no idea what my chapter will be about but I am trusting the process and the gut feeling that I needed to be involved in such a beautiful, powerful project. 18.01.2022 Some really great points in this post #Repost @birthmapping with @get_repost It may seem like semantics, but consider this:... A doula SUPPORTS birth. A doula does not ASSIST. To Assist a birth is to take authority in that birth, to insist on certain procedures or checks, to approve or allow certain behaviours, to operate clinically and methodically. An assisted birth is measured and monitored, by someone trained in medical assessment. Not everyone wants to be 'assisted'. But we ALL want to be supported. Many women, even when birthing in hospital, will state in their birth plans that they wish to have a 'hands off' labour. That they prefer to use water, movement, heat packs over medical options for contraction management. Some take this into the second stage, asking to be upright or in water, and not to be coached. The third stage also, can be hands off. BUT It very much depends on where you are choosing to birth and who is assisting you. Sometimes, it is luck of the draw. You happen to get a hands-off midwife on the day and birth within her shift. You can not assume you will have a supported birth in a hospital setting. You need to ask many questions, sometimes multiple times and rephrased. Often in early pregnancy you will be told "yes, yes, whatever you want"...but by 36+ weeks, the mood changes (even though you are still 'low risk'.). You may find that answers are indirect or dismissive, or non-committal. If a natural birth (ie no intervention, essentially unassisted) is important to you: hospital is unlikely to be a good place to birth. A birth centre, or a homebirth would be better suited. It isvery importantto match your birth philosophy to the location and the team working with you. #pregnancy #birth #choice #birthmapping #birthjourney #birthbook #birthpower #birthplan #understanding #consent #birthpreparation #knowledgeispower #nooneway #mothersmatter #yourway #birthrights #consent #birthmap #birthplanning #pathway #humanisedbirth #transformative #positivebirth #doula #communication #understanding #obstetrician #careprovider #midwife

17.01.2022 My children and I all sat mesmerised yesterday as we watched one of the pet stick insects shed its skin. The visible difference in the insect's new body had me thinking about personal growth and the ways we view it. Imagine if WE had a physical way of viewing the growth that happens when we work on our inner self. We can describe the discomfort of moving through the growth zone. When your out of your comfort zone, when you know things will be lighter on the other side but... you just need to sit in the discomfort for a while. So many times when you reach that other side, when you have up levelled you spend a short time feeling a new, lighter, more ecstatic way but slowly forget. We integrate the new and move on so quickly. Before we know it its a few months down the track, you are about to embark a new levelling up and you think about all the work you have to do. You see the mountain in front of you, but its so easy to forget the work you have done. The way you felt before you started the inner journey at all. We celebrate the growth of a business, of a child but without a physical difference in appearance, we forget to hold worth in our personal growth. I invite you to take a moment, to celebrate the work you have done. I see you and I acknowledge your struggles and I admire your triumphs. #selfcelebration #personalgrowth

16.01.2022 Always come back to your intuition!! #Repost @drsarawickham with @get_repost All screening tests have downsides. They may lead to overuse of intervention. And every time we use technology like this, we are undermining womens own knowledge.... The constant use of technology implies that our bodies arent capable of growing, birthing and feeding babies without a shed load of expensive machinery. And thats not just true. I spent last week chatting with a wonderful, passionate group of midwives, obstetricians, doulas, childbirth educators, hypnobirthing teachers and other birth workers from around the world, and this came up - again - as a key theme that so many of us are experiencing. It's so important to keep sharing positive messages about the awesomeness of the female body. And to remind people that we did this for millions of years before the machines came along. If it hadn't worked, none of us would be here today. I love my kids and I love spending time with them but I was so ready. It’s ok to have feelings that aren’t all positive about them being home for another week. To the parents with FIFO partners that aren’t coming home when you expect. I’m sorry. It’s so hard, I remember the feelings of overwhelm So clearly. You have got this, leave the mess. 15.01.2022 This is a wonderfully written article.

15.01.2022 While I was pregnant with my hbac babe, over 4 years ago now, I booked into a hospital just in case and for the guidelines mentioned below. My midwife was called by the ob and blasted for supporting my decisions. My midwife mentioned she may be reported and at the time I had no idea how serious the situation was. Reported for simply supporting autonomous choice. Its not a fair system at all. One providers fear should not challenge the livelihood of another. #Repost @melanie...themidwife with @get_repost Some new research just in by @midwifejohunter and @hannah.dahlen... settle in, Im about to tell you a story about private midwifery in Australia. This recent paper called the experiences of privately practising midwives in Australia who have been reported to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency tells us a few things about what private midwives are up against in Australia: 1. There are 241 midwives in ALL of Australia attending homebirths 2. We are uninsured for birth as health professionals 3. Private midwives are increasingly being reported to AHPRA for supporting womens choices 4. Its becoming increasingly difficult for midwives to support the needs and wishes of individual women and also meet the requirements of our registration 5. When women cant find midwives to serve their needs, they freebirth 6. AHPRA say their interest is in protecting the safety of the public ... are you following? What we learn from Jos research is that there are 241 midwives being repressed by other health professionals reporting them to an agency whose investigative process induces emotional and psychological distress... eventually the pressure under which private midwives work becomes too much and they leave the profession thereby making homebirth less accessible and making more women choose freebirth... @ahpra_nationalboards is supposed to be keeping the public safe! By treating private midwives with such disregard we make homebirth with a midwife less accessible and freebirth more attractive - if thats how you want it to play out, youre nailing it. #pokethebear #birthoutsidethesystem #birthingoutsidethesystem #homebirth @homebirth_austra See more

15.01.2022 What did you do with your placenta??? Placenta Rituals Across Cultures ~ The Baganda of Uganda believe that the placenta is actually a second child. Not only is it the childs double, but the placenta also has its own spirit that resides in the umbilical cord. The portion of the cord attached to the baby must be carefully preserved to ensure the good health of the child.... Borneo Sea Gypsies ~ After the mother has given birth, a traditional midwife will carry the placenta and umbilical cord to the shore, and will perform a burial ritual on the island. The bajau believe that throwing the placenta to the sea will bring misfortune and bad luck. The sea is a sacred place for the Bajau and according to their belief if they will throw it at sea the fish will eat it and then they will eat it. This will brings bad luck. Peru ~ Legend has it that Inca Yupanqui built a palace to house a gold statue of his mother Mama Rawa Occlo. Inside it he placed the placenta from his own birth. The Incas of Peru would dry out the umbilical cord and give it to the child to chew on later on while teething. Hawaii ~ Native Hawaiians treat the placenta as a sacred part of the baby. When it is buried in nature, a tree is planted over it so it grows with the child. China ~ The Chinese are big believers in the restorative powers of eating the placenta. Ziheche dried human placenta, is used in traditional Chinese medicine and consumed by the mother right up until menopause. New Zealand ~ Whenua', the Maori word for placenta, is also the word for 'land'. Maori people insist that the placenta and umbilical cord are buried together in a special receptacle on the child's native land, creating a special relationship between the newborn baby and the earth. Cambodia ~ Cambodian people believe that burying the placenta is key to ensuring the health of the baby and its mother in the future. It is wrapped in banana leaves and kept near the baby for three days before a burial ceremony. 14.01.2022 Vocalisation as a pain releasing technique. I love taking my sound bowl to birth. Playing the bowl while the birthing person is contracting can really bring their focus inward but I also love practicing vocalisation with the bowl. Vocalising in labour is the practice of making low, vibratory sound as breath is slowly released. There is a physiological connection between the vocal cords, the respiratory diaphragm, cervix and the perineum. Finding the ‘notes’ that resonate m...ost profoundly with your body is referred to as ‘toning’. Toning with the sound of the singing bowl can help release inhibitions and feelings that people are listening to you. The aaarrh sound is great for opening your throat and visualising your cervix opening more and more as you breath out. I also feel toning helps give you a direction to send the energy. I like to think of pain in terms of built up energy that needs to be released. Moving, making sound and again visualising the energy causing discomfort moving down and out the birthing canal leading the way for your babe can really help to relax your body during surges. of @birthlings_and_beyond #soundbirth #toning #vocalisation #embodiedbirthing #waterbirth #perthdoula #painrelease #mandurahdoula #perthmumstobe

13.01.2022 As your body beings to prepare for labour you may experience some early uncomfortable signs that things are progressing. Lower back ache and feeling crampy are common feelings for early labour as well as all the aches and pains your growing body is already feeling. Often the first thing you will be offered the help you rest and relax, for the journey ahead is some Panadol. Now I’m not here to tell you not to take it, if you think it will help you go for it but you should pr...obably know first that there is some evidence out there that suggest taking paracetamol in the early or latent stages of labour can slow things down and here is why. Prostaglandins are produced naturally by the body during the process of labour. Their role is to soften the cervix and to help open the cervix in response to contractions. Side note!- This is why many people will suggest sex to help bring on labour, orgasm may help stimulate the uterus into action, it releases the hormone oxytocin that helps to stimulate contractions and because semen contains a high number of prostaglandins which help to soften the cervix. Now back to Panadol. Paracetamol is generally considered to be an inhibitor of the synthesis of prostaglandins!!! So, by taking Panadol you are potentially cancelling out the natural lipids your body is producing to help you efface and start dilation, therefor making the early stages of labour drag out longer than necessary. #prostaglandins #paracetamole #panadol #painrelief #childbirth #earlylabor #doulalife #fullcircledoula #informeddecisionmaking

11.01.2022 Twins Did you know there are more than just 2 types of twins? Although in Australia all twins are classed as high risk each type of twin pregnancy comes with different challenges. Identical twins - monozygotic Twins conceived from one egg and one sperm are known as monozygotic twins. This type of twin pregnancy is a result of one fertilised egg splitting in 2 and the self-contained halves each form into a babe. Often monozygotic twins share a placenta and an amniotic sac.... This is known as monoamniotic. (Momo twins) These babies have 100% the same DNA. When this separation happens very early each baby can have a separate placenta and amniotic sac (Diamniotic). This sometimes results in them being misdiagnosed as fraternal twins. I have seen quite a few parents in the online space have their fraternal twins DNA tested because they look extremely similar only to discover they are in fact, identical twins. Fraternal twins - Dizygotic Twins conceived from two eggs and two sperm. This can happen if 2 eggs are released in ovulation, there are two ovulation cycles or if ovulation continues after one baby is already conceived . Dizygotic twins are pretty much like being pregnant twice. There are 2 placentas, two amniotic sacs and 2 babies (di di twins). The babies like other siblings have roughly 50% the same genetic makeup and can look as similar or different as any other siblings. This also means they can be the same or different sex. Fun fact superfecundation is the fertilisation of a second ovum in the same ovulation cycle during a second mating. In other words twins, the same age with different biological fathers!! How friggen cool is that. Do you have twins? My little di di babes are now 10!! 07.01.2022 Milestones in Parenthood With Kian transitioning to his own bed and my eldest daughter about to turn 12, I have been reflecting on all the times I have celebrated milestones as a parent. From Eloras first smile, Ayla and Soren learning to walk, Kian heading to kindy and now Elora heading into high school.... All the first first times where celebrated, filled with excitement about my growing baby and our shared learning. There are a lot of moments with the twins I dont remember. I cant tell you what their first words where or when they starting sitting unassisted and I know that sounds terrible but thats what sleep deprivation does to you. Elora was 20 months old when I had them and it was only roughly a year later that she started topical steroid withdrawal and the sleep was harder to find then it was with 3 babes under 2. I know there would have been joy and excitement. It was amazing to watch the dynamics of 2 babes that had been together since conception. Their bond is still so unique. I also know there was some relief. As they grew and learnt how to do more and more daily life became easier for me. I had a husband with a 4:1 week roster and I was struggling more than anybody knew. The 4th babe, the last babe. Had 3 older siblings to keep up with and learnt to walk at 9 months old. Everything happened way to fast for me and Im sitting here weeping at the last first times that have happened over they past couple of years and will come in the next. I am truly blessed to have 4 amazing children. 4 experiences that have taught me lifetimes of lessons in not quite 12 short years but the grief feels overwhelming today. #parenthood #milestones #perthdoula #fullcircledoula #sittinginmyfeelings

06.01.2022 Over the past couple of days in a number of groups I am in I keep seeing the question - Do I need a doula? It’s usually followed up with people replying yes! ... So here’s my thoughts. If you desire a doula at your birth then I believe that one should be accessible to you. After all it has been proven that birthing people with a doula report overall more positive outcomes, even when the doula is a stranger. Having independent support that is familiar with the maternal system you are choosing for your birth can make all the difference. Having someone that is familiar with pain management techniques and knowledge can really help. But nobody NEEDS a doula. Everything you need to birth your babe is already held in your innate wisdom. Yes a doula can help you remember and reconnect to this wisdom but ultimately you hold the power. I do not empower you to have a positive birth or birth on your terms or without fear because I cannot give you or take away your power or fear. I am your support. You and only you can listen to your body, your wisdom, your power. I feel the same way about birthing people needing a midwife or doctor. If you desire one that is fantastic but you don’t need one. Needing others to tell us how to birth or what to do with our bodies is one prime example or the ways we are conditioned to give away our power. Research, listen to others and then look within to feel what resonates for you xx. by @myrtleandmayphotography #perthmumstobe #perthdoula #mandurahdoula #mandurahmumstobe #birthsupport #youholdthepower #innatewisdom

03.01.2022 We talk about the birth of a mother all the time but birth is also a transformational time for those supporting the birthing person. I acknowledge the fact that support takes many different forms but today being Fathers Day I want to take a moment to talk about the birth of a father. The experience of birth, the hormonal rush, the joy, the trauma- it is all felt by the men in the birthing room. It has been proven that new neurones from in the male brain when they become fat...hers. It is often hard for fathers to voice their experiences with birth trauma, especially when it is increasingly normalised by our maternal health systems. Childbirth was experienced as a rollercoaster of emotion because of the speed and unexpectedness of events. Men described fears of death, mirroring their partners distress; trying to keep it together and helplessly watching a catastrophe unfold. Fathers felt themselves abandoned by staff with a lack of information. Men were subsequently distressed and preoccupied with the birth events but tended to feel that their responses were unjustified and tried to cope through avoidance. Men described the need for support but reluctance to receive it. When speaking to my partner around this topic he described feeling like the third wheel. That he wasnt spoken to or involved with conversation around what was going on and when I was taken into theatre he felt fear for the unknown and my life. 02.01.2022 Spring Equinox Blessings Dear ones xx Vernus Equinox... Today most especially we hover in the balance. Day meets dark in equal parts, but we we are tipping into the light. 2. Winters End Out of a season of pruning, pause, prudence, of waiting waiting waiting, we emerge: bony, ashen creatures lapping at dregs weary of cold hungry for light, wringing gray flake from our creaking limbs. 3. Below I want to plunge deep roots putting out blind tendrils that grope for more to entwine and bind with you together holding our dear Earth. We will weave her a shining net, gold in the broken places. 4. Above I want to spread my fingers into the sun to cup it into the pale curved leaf of my body swallow down the liquid light course it through my secret channels and greedily nourish each twining limb. Draw the ancient promise deep into my tree heart. The light is coming. Artowork- Unknown Poem- Jess Vice
