23.01.2022 Would you go to a silent reading party?! I know I would. I love reading in company.

16.01.2022 A classic piece on good writing, from Stephen King. Its also paved with excessive use of adjectives, as we discussed in the Grammar and Punctuation course I taught on the weekend.

14.01.2022 If youre looking for a good holiday read, or a great present for Mothers Day, I can highly recommend, this fascinating and funny biography, which I had the pleasure of proofreading earlier this year.

13.01.2022 Thanks to Bounce Books for the shoutout in their latest newsletter: http://goo.gl/cRHMFs

11.01.2022 Charlotte Wood gave the keynote speech at this year's Residential Editorial Program at Varuna - this edited version is a profound and inspirational must-read for all editors. Charlotte highlights four qualities in a good editor: generosity, humility, imaginative courage and the 'breath of life' they can breathe into a work. In balancing both courage and humility, she encourages editors to reject the 'seamstressy, handmaideny downtroddenness that surely sucks all richness from... the enterprise'. And she asks perhaps the most important and fascinating question: "how is a writer or an editor to recognise which kind of mess this manuscript might be? Whether this chaos before them is the untidiness of great art, or simply the disarray of the unresolved, the lazy, the incompetent?" Read. Bookmark. Read again.

11.01.2022 In my first publishing job, my boss had a massive multivolume copy of the OED on her desk. Times change! Personally Im a big fan of online dictionaries (I would be lost without my Macquarie subscription!) so I think this is a sensible move.

07.01.2022 I attended the opening night of the Emerging Writers Festival and had the pleasure of hearing Miles Allinsons thoughtful acceptance speech and enjoying powerful words from Maxine Beneba Clarke and an uprorious keynote speech from poet Derrick Brown. If the publishing success of the Victorian Premiers Literary Award winners so far is anything to go by, Allinson is a writer to watch.

05.01.2022 The winners of the Australian Book Industry Awards were announced yesterday in Sydney. I am currently reading the very compelling non-fiction winner The Stalking of Julia Gillard.

05.01.2022 Last week I had the pleasure of attending the book launch of Baby and a Backpack by Jane Cornelius, at Brunswick Street Bookstore - always delightful to see the end of the journey for a book Ive worked on! Jane (here signing copies of her book) did a great job promoting her autobiography.

01.01.2022 Writing (and editing) for the web is a specialised skill, but it isnt as daunting as you might think.
